Counseling Services

Counselors are available to meet with students by appointment. However, some concerns may be addressed on a walk-in basis. Counselors are at least master's level professionals who are trained to provide personal, academic, and career counseling services.

Counselors do not offer therapy sessions; however, they can provide crisis counseling and referral. They can also help students with life challenges and stressors that affect their academics and give them strategies for managing concerns that impact their academic success.

There are three division counselors on campus.

STAR Program

The Success Training and Referral (STAR) Program is a program designed to assist students in mastering skills that

will provide them with long-term academic success. The program is also designed for instructors to refer students

that are at risk of failing, dropping a course, or withdrawing from school.

Page 5: Campus Resources Available for Students Kingwood Campus · 2014. 9. 23. · Managing your time Time management, like organization, helps students to arrange their lives to create

Tutor Handbook

Can students refer themselves to the program?

Yes, certainly. If you are struggling in any way, we are here to help you! All you have to do is contact the STAR

Coordinator at 281-312-1439.

As an instructor, what signals should alert me that a student may need to be referred?

Some common signs may be excessive absences (especially during the first week), the student does not turn in

assignments, performs poorly on assignments and tests/quizzes, is acting-out in class, appears depressed, or

seems overwhelmed or lost as a new college student.

One of my students is struggling. How do I refer him/her to the program?

Please print and complete the form at http://lonestar.edu/departments/learningcenter/STAR_referral_form.pdf .

What happens after the referral?

1. A STAR Coach will contact, counsel and advise the student in strategies for academic success.

2. If it is a referral by instructor, the instructor will be notified when the referral has been handled and will

receive a follow-up report. The amount of information shared with the instructor is determined by whether

or not the student has signed a consent form and/or gives the STAR Coach and/or Coordinator permission

to share the information.

Student Success Seminars Description These 30-minute sessions offer students opportunities to augment their study skills, improve time budgeting between class, job, and family, how to manage the stress of finals, and more.

Location SFA 200

Scheduled Seminars These classes will be held in HSB 208 from 12:30 - 1:20pm. Classes will be limited to a first-come basis.

For a current schedule, ask the receptionist.

Making an Appointment Visit the Tutoring Center, SFA 200

Call (281) 312-1439 All sessions can be scheduled by appointment on an individual or class basis

Topics to Request

Communication skills Communication involves both verbal and non-verbal forms, speaking as well as listening. By developing effective communication skills, students will experience success in many aspects. This session will encourage students to build their communication skills by recognizing the elements of communication. It will also help students to identify poor communication and how they can avoid this trap.

Coping with finals It goes without saying that finals can be very stressful for students. By learning some strategies to cope with finals, students can approach them with a confident and optimistic outlook. This session will give students the opportunity to formulate a "battle plan" for finals week.

Critical thinking Critical thinking examines assumptions, discerns hidden values, evaluates evidence, and assesses conclusion. In any class for any assignment, critical thinking is an asset. In this session, students will exercise their critical thinking skills, review some common errors in judgment and gain some skills.

Dealing with stress Students are frequently unaware that the top issue that blocks success is the effects of stress. Stress manifests itself in a variety of physical and emotional ways. In this session, students will gain an awareness of strategies for stress and anxiety reduction and compare their current practices with recommended strategies for stress and anxiety reduction.

Dollars and sense Frequently students come to college without the basic financial skills they need to succeed independently. This session will cover basic money management skills, using credit wisely, and budgeting for better planning.

Page 9: Campus Resources Available for Students Kingwood Campus · 2014. 9. 23. · Managing your time Time management, like organization, helps students to arrange their lives to create

Tutor Handbook Effective reading strategies Often students are surprised and intimidated by the amount of text book reading that instructors expect them to cover. Many are not even aware of how to read for retention of important information. This session will provide students with some strategies that they can employ to increase reading effectiveness and retention.

Grammar review Frequently students need a refresher to review basic grammar rules. This interactive session will review the trickiest grammar topics that students often forget - parallel structure, pronoun-antecedent agreement, pronoun usage, apostrophe usage, comma use and clauses, misplaced and dangling modifiers, etc.

Graphic organizers for success Graphic organizers are visual methods of representing information. Most students are visual learners. By utilizing graphic organizers, these students can more efficiently review, retain and apply academic information. This session will show students numerous graphic organizers.

Know your learning style When mismatches exist in a class between a student's learning style and the teaching style of the professor, a student may become bored and inattentive in class, do poorly on tests, get discouraged about the courses, the curriculum, and him/herself, and in some cases change to another class or drop out of school. This session will help students to identify their learning styles and give them strategies for using that knowledge to their advantage in an academic setting.

Listening and observing Frequently students get listening mixed up with hearing. Listening involves actively tuning into what is audibly happening. The same is true for observing versus seeing. This seminar will show students how to actively listen and observe in order to apply this knowledge to their success in the classroom.

Managing your time Time management, like organization, helps students to arrange their lives to create an environment conducive to productivity. In this session, students will develop awareness of strategies for improved time management and assess their current personal time management strengths and weaknesses. At the end of this seminar, students should be able to create a personal study schedule and list of strategies for improved time management.

Maximizing memory Memory is key to successful performance in an academic setting. During this session, students will develop awareness of strategies for memory and concentration improvement, compare current practices with recommended strategies for concentration and memory improvement, and create a personalized memory and concentration "toolbox" of change lists and useful exercises or strategies.

Note taking made easy Student will learn that note taking is an essential part of student success, particularly in a college setting. While instructors tend to rely only on oral teaching, the majority of students are visual learners. This means that in order to absorb the message, students should efficiently and accurately document what they hear and see. This seminar will give students the tools to more efficiently and effectively take notes, not matter what class.

Note taking skills for math This session covers all of the materials in "Note Taking Made Easy" in the context of note taking for math classes.

Organizational skills Being organized is not the first priority to busy individuals, particularly busy students. In this session, students will

Page 10: Campus Resources Available for Students Kingwood Campus · 2014. 9. 23. · Managing your time Time management, like organization, helps students to arrange their lives to create

Tutor Handbook gain resources for organizing their time, homes, and lives with the intention of giving them more space to focus on academics.

Powerful presentations The number one fear is public speaking. If this is the case, students need to be given the resources to feel confident that any presentation that they will give will be powerful; thus, minimizing the fear they may feel. This session seeks to help students to identify what and how to present effectively in any situation.

Secrets of successful students There are some things any student can do in order to improve his/her performance in college. This session covers a few of the "secrets" that successful students employ, even if the content seems impossible!

Setting goals and staying motivated One of the keys to success is visualizing success. Setting goals can provide students with something to attain and aim toward in their studies. This session will help students learn to create goals, develop awareness of personal intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and develop strategies to improve personal intrinsic and extrinsic motivation towards those goals.

Study strategies Utilizing effective study strategies must begin the first day of class. Students come equipped with all of the physical tools necessary for academic success, but frequently do not have the strategic tools they need - particularly, how to study. This session allows students to compare and contrast current study practices and habits with practices recommended for effectiveness and to improve study habits based on individualized modification of environment, duration, and practices.

Successful study groups Study groups can be an excellent tool for students in college. However, if facilitated improperly, study groups can cause more harm than good. This session teaches students how to form cohesive study groups and how to keep them running smoothly and effectively.

Test taking tips Having strategies for taking different types of tests can improve student performance. By learning what is expected during a test, a student will gain confidence, which will trickle down into test performance and lessen anxiety. This session will give students information about different types of tests - objective, subjective, essay, multiple choice, etc. that will help them to plan for test day!

Supplemental Instruction What is Supplemental Instruction? Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an internationally recognized approach to student support developed at the University of Missouri - Kansas City (UMKC) in 1973 by Dr. Deanna Martin. Designed to reduce attrition and improve academic performance, SI identifies "high risk" courses -- typically, those with a 30% or higher D/F/W rate -- and employs students who have successfully completed the course as SI leaders. SI sessions are held outside of class, often immediately before or after, and are free, voluntary, structured group study sessions facilitated by the SI leader. Supplemental Instruction at Lone Star College - Kingwood began in 1992 and has since developed into a dynamic and rapidly growing program.

Why is Supplemental Instruction Effective? SI is a proactive approach to student success that finds a balance between modeling, teaching, practice, and feedback. The SI program targets traditionally difficult academic courses - those that have high rates of D, F, and W - rather than students who are having difficulty in the course. In close partnership with the professor, SI leaders plan and facilitate activities that not only reinforce the content, but introduce and exercise study skills, critical thinking, and problem solving methods that form a foundation for student success. By focusing on these skills, SI paves the way for future success and student independence throughout their college career.

How is Supplemental Instruction Different from Tutoring? Supplemental Instruction is part of a larger package of support options offered at LSC-Kingwood. While SI does have some similarities to tutoring, its focus on academic skills and social learning make it a vastly different program that complements - not competes with - traditional tutoring. SI leaders are encouraged to refer their students to tutoring when they need individual, content specific help. The table below illustrates how SI and tutoring complement each other.

Charlotte Iserhardt, SI Coordinator [email protected]

What SI is:

Proactive support for courses with high DFW rates

Assigned to a specific course and instructor, with the instructor’s consent

Peer facilitated study sessions

Integrates course content with study strategies

Open to all students – not just those who are struggling

Focuses on successful student behaviors

Free and voluntary

What SI is not: Tutoring

Teaching (or re-teaching)

Remedial or make-up instruction

T.A. or clerical assistance

A replacement for other support services

Civil Rights: Complaint & Appeal

Lone Star College System Nondiscrimination & Equal Opportunity Policy

The Lone Star College System is committed to the principle of equal opportunity in education and employment. The System does not discriminate against individuals on the basis of race, color, gender, religion, disability, age, veteran status, nationality or ethnicity in the administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, employment policies, scholarship and loan programs, and other System or College administered programs and activities.

Inquiries concerning the System's policies, compliance applicable laws, statutes, regulations (such as Title VI, Title IX, and Section 504), and complaints may be directed to the Vice Chancellor for Human Resources, who is designated as the System's Equal Opportunity Officer and Title IX Coordinator. Inquiries about the laws and compliance may also be directed to the Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights, US Department of Education.

Lone Star College System Board Policy AHA provides that no individual shall be excluded from admission to, participation in, denied the benefits of, or be subject to discrimination under any Lone Star College System program or sponsored activity on the basis of race, creed, color, national origin, gender, age, veteran status, or disability.

Prohibited discrimination includes the following:

Harassment: Simply put, harassment is any conduct, verbal or physical, on or off campus, that has the effect of unreasonably interfering with an individual or group's educational performance at Lone Star College System or that creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive educational environment. Harassment on the basis of race, creed, color, national origin, gender, age, veteran status or disability includes harassment of an individual in terms of a stereotyped group characteristic, or because of that person's identification with a particular group.

Behavior that might be considered harassment includes the following conduct that targets an individual on the basis of race, creed, color, national origin, gender, age, veteran status or disability:

Page 15: Campus Resources Available for Students Kingwood Campus · 2014. 9. 23. · Managing your time Time management, like organization, helps students to arrange their lives to create

Assault and battery, sexual assault, or rape. (This conduct might also be a crime.) Overt threats, serious intimidation, stalking behavior, repeated refusal to take no for an answer, obscene

messages on voice mail or computer, taking obvious advantage of someone who is intoxicated or on drugs, serious threats of retaliation and actual retaliation, or sexual bribes and blackmail.

Repeated, unwanted touching or kissing, especially if the behavior has been labeled unwelcome. Locking up or physically restraining someone against his or her will or forcing a person into a shower. Degrading, public tirades from a college employee or another student. Deliberate, repeated humiliation, including deliberate humiliation on the basis of sexual orientation,

religion, nationality, age, disability, gender or race. Continued use of a handicap railing or a handicap ramp to lock a bicycle or other object after a warning, or

other deliberate interference with the life or work of a disabled person. Deliberate desecration of religious articles or places, repeated unwanted proselytizing or repeated

interference with the reasonable pursuit of religious life. Repeated insults about loss of personal and professional competence addressed to an older person.

Disparate treatment. The denial of equal access and opportunity can also consist of denying a student, because of his or her race, creed, color, national origin, gender, age, veteran status or disability, the opportunity to participate, compete or be evaluated by the same standards as students who do not have the same characteristics. This can occur through the unequal application of evaluation or grading standards; denial of enrollment in a program or activity; or inaccessibility of a program or part of a program as a result of a student's disability.

Retaliation. Retaliation against anyone who brings a complaint in good faith is against Lone Star College System Board Policy AHA and may be a violation of state and federal laws. Proven retaliation will be treated as a serious offense.

Complaint Process

The purpose of this procedure is to secure at the first possible level prompt and equitable resolution of a student complaint alleging discrimination on any basis prohibited by applicable law, including but not limited to, race, creed, color, national origin, gender, age, or disability. An unfounded complaint deemed to have been made in malice, dishonesty in the context of an investigation of a complaint, or retaliation against a person for making a complaint will be treated as serious offenses by Lone Star College System.

Informal Complaint

Complaints shall be processed in accordance with the following procedures:

1. Complaints shall be presented orally to the dean, student counselor or Civil Rights Administrator (CRA) about the situation that caused the complaint. The dean, student counselor or CRA shall attempt to resolve the matter informally.

2. The informal decision rendered by the dean, student counselor or CRA shall be deemed accepted by the student unless the student files a formal complaint in accordance with the following requirements.

Formal Complaint

If the student is not satisfied with the action taken at the informal level, the student may file a formal complaint in accordance with the following procedures:

1. The student shall, within sixty (60) days of when the student knew or should have known of the situation that caused the complaint, file a complaint in writing with the college Civil Rights Administrator (CRA). The written statement shall contain:
