A Bridge towards the World

The Bologna process has created a unified tertiary education area, which enables bridges to other tertiary education systems in the world

Two semesters split the university year

Since 2002 and thanks to the LMD system (Licence, Master, Doctorat, i.e. Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorate), a better understanding of European diplomas makes academic exchanges easier and promotes international mobility

The European Credit Transfer accumulation System (ECTS) enables equivalencies

Licence corresponds to the early years of studies and is achieved in 3 years, after validating 180 credits

Master is achieved in two years after validating 120 credits and Doctorat in three years

Universities

CampusFrance

France has 83 public universities (and equivalent institutions)

The universities provide instruction in all fields of knowledge. They enroll 1.4 million students, including 70,000 doctoral candidates. Enrollment in the first year of university study is open to students who have earned

a French baccalauréat or an equivalent secondary-school diploma.

The universities provide career-oriented education (2- and 3-year professional

degrees, the professional Master, and teacher training). The bulk of France’s scholarly and scientific research is done in the universities. Special provisions govern the access of international students to medical education.

The grandes écoles

CampusFrance

France’s unique system

Schools of engineering, the four écoles normales supérieures (ENS), institutes of

political studies (IEP), schools of business and management, and schools of

veterinary medicine, agronomy, and other specialized subjects.

Admission is highly selective. Government-sanctioned schools confer degrees, equivalent to the

European Master. Programs in the grandes écoles require from 3 to 7 years of study. The tutions fees varies by school (public institutions, see slide 18).

285,000 students are enrolled in programs at the nation’s grandes écoles.
