Sometime in the 1930s, two young Danish engineers and former schoolmates,
Mr. Henning Holck-Larsen and Mr. S.K. Toubro arrived on the shores of India
as representatives of FL Smidth & Co. Guided by their belief in the future of the
Indian economy and domestic manufacturing needs and capabilities, the duo
began a partnership firm, which, over the next few decades, would become one
of India’s biggest success stories. Merely three years older than independent
India, the contribution of L&T Construction to the nation’s infrastructure has
been significant and noteworthy. Rightly referred to as a ‘Nation Builder’,
L&T Construction has to its credit landmark buildings, state-of–the-art airports,
roads, bridges, power projects, transmission lines and oil & gas pipelines. As an
Indian MNC, L&T is fast increasing its presence in the global market earning the
moniker of ‘Builder of Nations’.

Mimicking nature in concrete and steel is no easy feat!
• The Lotus Temple, located in New Delhi, India, is a Bahá’í House of
Worship completed in 1986 by Larsen & Toubro Limited.
• Since its inauguration to public worship in December 1986, the
Bahá’í House of Worship in Delhi has, as of late 2001, attracted more
than 70 million visitors, making it one of the most visited buildings
in the world. Its numbers of visitors during those years surpassed
those of the Eiffel Tower and the Taj Mahal.
• It took 18 months just to translate the design into structural
designs and working drawings!
• To produce the complex double curved surfaces and the closeness
of petals, one fold behind the next, posed challenges in fixing
formwork, reinforcement and concreting. Many of the components
were developed meticulously in full size mockups and models.
• To prevent the marks of cold joints, the casting of the petals was
carried out in continuous pour sometimes for a height of 22 m
lasting more than 48 hours.
• The partly open structure is shielded from the elements by a glass
and steel roof at the level of the radial beams, allowing soft natural
light into the center of the Lotus, in which, stands the auditorium,
proud like the stamen of a lotus.
• Each component of the structure is repeated 9 times. 9 pools
surround the structure. The outermost 9 petals open outwards and
form the 9 entrances all around the outer annular hall. The next set
of 9 petals, the outer leaves, point inward. The third set of 9 petals,
are partly closed reminding one of a blooming lotus.
Trivia – The Lotus Temple
The 10,000 sq. m of White marble that covers the outer surface of the tem-ple and the inner surface of arches was mined from Mount Pentilekon in Greece and cut in Italy.
• The symmetrical patterns are formed in different ways. The outer
and entrance leaves and inner domes and patterns are formed of
longitudes and latitudes of spheres.
• The outer supports to the podium contain neoprene pad bearings
to accommodate thermal and shrinkage movements.
• The foundations to primary columns beneath the foundations of
entrance and outer leaves were also mounted on rubber pads. A
rubber pad was provided above the interior dome hub, supporting
the radial roof beams.
