Biological Contaminants

• Biological contaminants are living or once living organisms.

• Indoor biological contaminants Includes: Bacteria, molds, mildew, viruses, animal dander and cat salvia, house dust mites, cockroaches, and pollen.

• Effects: – allergic reactions– asthma– diseases such as influenza, measles, and chicken pox– Sneezing, watery eyes, coughing, dizziness

• To help prevent: Install exhaust fans and clean the house

Cryptosporidium

Protozoan that can cause Gastro-Intestinal illness with diahrrea in humans.

The organism most commonly isolated in HIV positive patients presenting with diahrrea.

Treatment is symptomatic with fluid rehydration, electrolyte correction, and management of any pain.

Shigella

• It was a rod-shaped bacteria.• It is natually found in humans and apes.• Causes:

a) Touching your mouth

b) Eating contaminated foods

c) Swallowing contaminated water• Treatment :

Antibiotics

Infection of the small intestine Caused by a microscopic organism When water becomes contaminated with raw sewage Symptoms: Diarrhea, bloating, and headache Treatment: Antibiotic therapy Prevention: Water purification
