INTRODUCTION

This year, we are delighted that the city of New York has embraced design with NYCxDesign. A few

years ago at one of Jerry Helling’s notable dinners, a group of us at one of the tables spoke about how

wonderful it would be if an initiative could come from the city to champion design. Now, it has

happened, this is just the beginning of what we hope will be a celebration of the design talent in the

city, and the platform New York offers across the scope of architecture, urban planning digital and

graphic design. The disciplines are so rich, and May going forward will be a key time for New York as

the connections are made.

We are looking forward to ICFF and the many initiatives going on there from Fab.com’s ‘designer call

out’ to Bernhardt Design and Bespoke Global. At Wanted Design, Odile and Clare have raised the bar

yet again with excellent programming and content. This is their third year and they have established

an inspiring design destination. At Wanted Design, look out for Bernhardt with The Carrot Concept

and Neal Feay Noho remains one of our favorite neighborhoods for installations, meeting people and

parties at The Bowery. Jill and Monica are spearheading this so well, and it gets better each year.

In Soho, Camron is proud to be working with Kartell, Bisazza and Artemide this year and there will be

openings on Monday evening and we look forward to welcoming you. Elsewhere in the city, do seek

out Baroncelli in the DND Building and Tai Ping in their showroom where they show Ramy Fischler’s

new Chinoiserie Collection.

In this inaugural Camron New York pack, we have also shared with you restaurants we seek out and

destinations in New York that we appreciate while in the city, either as residents or visitors.

Looking forward to seeing you there with our New York, London and San Francisco teams!

ICFF PRESS RELEASES

In less than two weeks, the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) will celebrate its 25th year at New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. From May 18-21, New York City will be design central for leading innovators, thinkers, planners, experimenters, educators, manufacturers, up-and-comers, and design-lovers as they flock to North America’s premier event for contemporary design. Within an anticipated 165,000 net square feet (15,300 net square meters), the ICFF will map the frontier of design’s best and design’s next in full-on silver anniversary style. Expected are more than 500 exhibitors from more than 30 countries, 9 contingents, 13 special features, and more than 26,000 attendees.

At Age 25, The ICFF Continues to Push the Boundaries of Design, Ideas, and Innovation The International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF), North America’s annual platform for global design, will be 25 in 2013. To celebrate its silver anniversary at New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, May 18-21, the ICFF is mapping the frontier of what’s best and what’s next in design more fully, in greater detail, and more innovatively than ever before. That means expansion. And that’s what the ICFF is doing. Thanks to an unprecedented 30% growth on top of the expected 500 exhibitors from more than 30 countries, the ICFF is pushing the boundaries of the existing show floor and adding Javits North to Halls 1A, 1B, and 1C. The increase is due to a rising tide of first time exhibitors and the number of returning exhibitors in need of larger spaces. Says Kevin O’Keefe, senior vice president of GLM, ICFF’s producer and manager, “We’re thrilled that the ICFF is experiencing this unprecedented growth spurt 25 years into its existence. The expansion speaks to the thriving nature of the global market for design, to the ICFF’s premier status as North America’s leading market for contemporary design, and for the show’s remarkable ability to pull in an ever-growing audience with the scope of its offerings.” To celebrate its 25th in high style, the ICFF is debuting Material Makers, a special feature that explores the hands-on process that is design innovation and product development. In Material Makers, the ICFF is matching material and fabricator exhibitors with select designers to develop ICFF-exclusive product for display. First up is design whiz Tom Dixon, who will collaborate in real time with the high-tech company TRUMPF Inc. to test the limits of his own creativity and Trumpf’s exceptional sheet-metal processing and laser-based production capabilities – in real time. The process of design is endlessly fascinating and variable, and the ICFF intends in May to explore that variability to the utmost. At this year’s show, The Architect’s Newspaper and Mode Collective will launch DesignX, a series of concentrated workshops devoted to digital design and fabrication technology. The DesignX workshops – on the topics of parametric design, direct-to-fabrication, and web-based design apps – will bring designers up to speed on the latest software and show them how to use fabrication technology to bring their ideas to reality. Each year, the ICFF sets the stage for a remarkable education component with its series of ICFF Talks. For this show, the line-up of presenters is more stellar than always. So is the bevy of partners, including:Bloomberg Businessweek, Dwell, Fast Company, Interior Design, Material ConneXion, Metropolis, and Surface. The ICFF charts much more than the state of design, now. With its innovative Schools and ICFF Studio programs, it also offers insight into design in the future. This year, eight schools have been awarded spots in the juried Schools exhibit. They include: Art Center College of Design, Cranbrook Academy of Art, Danish Institute for Study Abroad (DIS), Konstfack, Partnership in Academic Leadership in Sustainability (PALS), University of Cincinnati, The University of Tokyo. Its incomparable ICFF Studio program, presented with Bernhardt Design, which offers select up-and-coming design talent the rare chance to develop prototypes with a leading industry manufacturer, continues to grow. This year, the jury offered spots to 11 designers on the rise around the world: Aaron Leahy, Perth, Australia; Alexandra Burr and Allen Slamic, Brooklyn, New York; Brandon Kim, Los Angeles, California; Carlo Aiello, Los Angeles, California; David Okum, Los Angeles, California; Elliot Eakin, Chicago, Illinois; Jonathan Rowell, San Francisco, California; Mandalaki, Milan, Italy; Rahyja Afrange, Sao Paulo, Brazil; Tamera Leigh Staten, Chicago, Illinois; Yeji Kim, Pasadena, California.

Page 13: Camron New York Pack 2013

13

The ICFF is also broadening its boundaries to a new continent, with an unprecedented feature that explores the African & African-Caribbean Design Diaspora (AACDD). An initiative of the British European Design Group (BEDG), this exciting addition to the show celebrates the multi-disciplinary creative talent emerging from the African and African-Caribbean craft traditions and will include multiple freestanding exhibits with craftspeople plying their particular artisan expertise. Vodunuvo, an exhibit presented by Patty Johnson, furthers the ICFF’s exploration of new design territory – in this case, Haiti. Vodunuvo makes the case for Haiti as a dynamic, evolving culture with a critical place in the contemporary design marketplace by reexamining and transforming Haitian artifacts into products and objects that carry the island’s essential culture in a new form. Bergdorf Goodman will put the ICFF and the best new design front and center in its 57th Street windows for the run of the show. This year, the grand emporium with the most glamorous windows in the world will bring the ICFF to the heart of midtown – and the center of the retail world – once again. Watch out 57th Street: the ICFF is back, and the ICFF exhibitor products in Bergdorf Goodman’s windows will give the long-loved pastime of window shopping an inventive, eye-catching twist.

25 Years of Design, 25 Years of Ideas, 25 Years of Innovation, 25 Years of ICFF The International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF), North America’s annual platform for global design, will be 25 in 2013. To celebrate its silver anniversary at New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, May 18-21, the ICFF is mapping the frontier of what’s best and what’s next in design more fully, in greater detail, and more innovatively than ever before. Within an anticipated 145,000 net square feet (13,500 net square meters), it expects to host more than 500 exhibitors from more than 30 countries, 10 contingents, 9 special features, and more than 26,000 attendees. It may well exceed those estimates, given the unprecedented momentum of early confirmations from exhibitors and contingents. To date, Artek USA, Bernhardt Design, Brizo, Fermob, Jake Dyson LLP, molo, Rich Brilliant Willing, Tom Dixon, and Vitra have committed to showing. Contingents Inside Norway and Interiors from Spain have also assured that they’ll be there on the ICFF floor. A key feature of the ICFF’s focus on innovation is the introduction of fabricators. For starters? Design whiz Tom Dixon will collaborate with the high-tech company TRUMPF Inc. on an ICFF-exclusive product that explores Dixon’s creativity and Trumpf’s remarkable sheet-metal processing and laser-based production capabilities – in real time. In a unique product-development program, the ICFF will match material and fabricator exhibitors with select designers to develop ICFF-exclusive product for the inauguration of Material Makers™, a special features exhibit. What’s the future of design? The ICFF gives some insight into that pressing question each year with its Schools and ICFF Studio programs. Both have already put out a call for entries with a December 15 deadline. The ICFF Opening Night Party is the design world’s can’t-miss event each ICFF. This year’s festivities are slated for Saturday, May 18 at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). To be celebrated that night is the launch of the MoMA Design Store program DESTINATION: NYC, promoting designers living and working in New York City's five boroughs. The ICFF is the exclusive sponsor of DESTINATION: NYC. New York-based 2x4 has developed a graphic program and design system with an eye-catching color palette and silver highlight for this year’s ICFF motto: 25 Years of Design, 25 Years of Ideas, 25 Years of Innovation, 25 Years of ICFF.

New York City becomes the global design epicentre in May as the annual International Contemporary Furniture Fair hits town. Of course, we will be showcasing our (literally) hot off the press products shipped fresh from our Milan adventures – entitled the Rough and the Smooth, comprising of both precision engineered high finish objects contrasted with products featuring a more textured, handcrafted, honest and heavy materiality . This show will be complemented by a major installation featuring a temporary pop-up Manhattan manufacturing unit – where we partner with Trumpf U.S, North America's leading manufacturer of industrial lasers and fabricating equipment, to demonstrate live the new digital industrial revolution, which now allows us to go direct from factory floor, straight to the consumer, using the latest innovations in digital design and manufacture – in the heart of the city. These new tools have the potential to liberate the designer from the big investments previously necessary for accessing industrialised production, creating possibility for the customer to be involved in the development of the product they are actually purchasing. In short, revitalising local manufacturing in a way not seen for a century or more. There may be a chance for you to get hold of one of these unique limited edition items, come back for more details.
