Your  Personal  Brand:  Specific  tips  for  reviewing,  cleansing  and  maintaining  the  online  components  Presented  3.2015  ©  Casey  Miller

TO-‐DO:  Google  yourself,  vigorously  and  thoroughly

• Search  you  name  and  details  on  the  major  search  engines:  Google.com,  Yahoo.com  and  Bing.com

• Copy/paste  all  troublesome  URLs  into  a  text  file,  for  easy  return  access    • List  out  in  order  your  most-‐used  social  channels:  Facebook,  Twitter,  Instagram

o Review  each  for  collateral  damage  • If  a  hiring  manager  saw  any  of  this  this,  would  you  get  the  job  …  or  the  door?  • Prioritize  a  punch  list  of  immediate  fixes;  delete  and  edit  what  you  can  • If  your  overshared  youth  is  really  horrible,  delete  the  entire  social  media

account(s)

TO-‐DO:  Fix  your  Facebook    DOWNLOAD  your  entire  Facebook  history  in  one  (possibly  horrific)  PDF!

SET  privacy  parameters  • In  top  navigation  bar,  click  on  carat  at  far  top  right  • Click  on  Settings  • Scroll  down  left  column  and  click  Privacy  • Set/adjust:  Who  can  see  my  stuff?  Limit  the  audience  for  posts  you've  shared

with  friends  of  friends  or  Public?  Click  to  LIMIT  • Set/adjust:  Who  can  contact  me?  • Set/adjust:  Who  can  look  me  up?  Do  you  want  other  search  engines  to  link  to

your  timeline?  Adjust  to  NO

SET  timeline  parameters  • In  top  navigation  bar,  click  on  carat  at  far  top  right  • Click  on  Settings  • Scroll  down  left  column  and  click  Timeline  and  Tagging  • Review  posts  that  friends  tag  you  in  before  they  appear  on  your  timeline?  Adjust

to  ON  • Review  tags  people  add  to  your  own  posts  before  the  tags  appear  on  Facebook?

Adjust  to  ON    FYI  the  full  site  and  the  mobile  app  often  differ:  If  you  use  both  for  Facebooking  regularly,  you  have  two  separate  labyrinths  of  settings  to  spelunk.  Yay!

TO-‐DO:  Bring  your  LinkedIn  account  back  to  life    FILL  IN  THE  BASICS

• Be  accurate!  Your  professional  frenemies  will  rat  you  out  o Double-‐check  dates  and  job  titles  o Revise  to  avoid  exaggerations  and  fudging  o Don’t  write  about  yourself  in  third  person;  it’s  cheesy  o Search  LinkedIn  if  you  need  to  for  exact  names  of  colleges,  companies,

training  you  list:  this  generates  helpful  links  from  your  profile,  to  those  pages  on  LinkedIn

• Accurately  fill  in  your  online  resume  back  at  least  10  years  o Be  sure  to  include  Education,  Jobs,  Training,  Philanthropic  projects

• Add  a  decent  CURRENT  digital  photo  o Taken  within  the  past  2  years  o Avoid  blurry,  informal,  too-‐busy  photos  o Don’t  chop  off  body  parts  of  people  beside  you;  if  you  can’t  crop  it  easily

for  a  clear  head  and  shoulders  shot  of  your  beautiful  mug,  don’t  use  it  o Avoid  mood  lighting;  Glamour  Shots  also  are  cheesy  o Try  out  two;  post  and  look  at  them  and  pick  your  best  to  use

 EXPAND  YOUR  REACH  ON  LINKEDIN

• Find  and  join  at  least  2  relevant  industry  groups  • Find  and  join  your  college  alumni  association(s)  • Find  and  follow  2-‐4  business  leaders  you  admire  • Find  and  follow  2-‐4  companies  you  admire  • Check  out  Jobs  listings

 UPDATE  AND  POST  REGULARLY

• Update  your  professional  experience,  one  a  quarter  • Consider  posting  on  LinkedIn  as  one  of  your  Personal  Brand  channels  • Add  colleagues,  co-‐workers  and  industry  contacts  to  your  professional  network

o Add  a  few  every  week  o Collect  people  that  inspire  and  interest  you:  speakers  you  hear,

connections  UP  the  corporate  ladder  and  ACROSS  companies/industries

TO-‐DO:  Focus  and  expand  your  Personal  Brand  online    SELECT  1-‐2  online  channels  to  grow  your  Personal  Brand.  One  is  okay.  Consider:

• LinkedIn  • Robust  industry  website(s)  with  active  community  participation  • Your  resume/portfolio  website  • A  professional  Twitter  account.  Twitter  can  be  effective  IF:

o You  set  up  a  professionally-‐themed  account;  don’t  mix  public  and  private  tweets;  it’s  weird  and  confusing

o You  attend  enough  industry  events,  workshops,  conventions  to  be  an  interesting  tweeter

• Understand  and  follow  your  employer’s  social  media  policies

 • Delete  any  incomplete/old  channels  you  may  have  dabbled  in

o Google+  was  dead  on  arrival  o SlideShare.com  …  meh  o No  one  reads  blogs;  put  your  energy  into  a  channel  with  a  better  return  o Industry  sites  that  turned  out  to  be  duds;  delete  any  old  profiles

PUBLISH  regularly  via  your  online  brand  channel(s)

• Commit  to  publishing  twice  a  week  • Strive  for  quick,  concise  content  that  is  relevant  to  your  network  • Pass  along  online  rankings,  articles,  news  that  YOU  find  interesting  • Add  a  quick  note  INTERPRETING  what’s  in  the  article  • GENTLY  brag  on  yourself:  Include  your  philanthropic  efforts,  successful  projects,

promotions,  sharing  credit  with  your  teams  • ENGAGE  for  traction:  Ask  relevant  questions  of  the  online

people/groups/companies  you  are  following
