Use this tutorial as a guide for using Camtasia. If you are using for the narrated slideshow assignment, disregard the video portion. Throughout the tutorial there will be shortened versions of instructions before an extended version. The tutorial covers the following concepts:

Creating a Script

To complete the narrated slideshow you will want to start by compiling a script of your topic in-world. A script is the information you will read during your narrated slideshow. There are a variety of ways to write scripts such as creating a 2-column table:

GimpGirl's mission is to bring women with disabilities together in the spirit of support, positivity and inclusivity. The world of women with disabilities is a complex place, often with no easy answers. They encourage an attitude of self-advocacy and self-efficacy with all of their members and are radically inclusive of all women with disabilities.

With the strength of their members and allies throughout the global disability and women's worlds, they use the tools at their disposal to create a place for discourse, humor, art, research, resources, and most of all, community.

Using the 2-column table will be easier to sync your audio to your visuals later.

For additional information regarding snapshots refer to the video for unit 3.

Starting Camtasia StudioIf you do not have a new document as pictured below, click on File and New Project to begin and immediately save your project as your last name and unit. For example; “smith_unit5”.

Creating the Title Slide

Your project should begin with a title slide describing it. Title slides can be found under Library | Themes. When you find a title slide you want to use, you can click right over it and select “Add to

More > Title Clips > Add Title Clip

Timeline at Playhead.” Or you can just manually drag it down to your timeline at the bottom of the screen.

A pop-up box will appear asking for what size dimension you will use for your video. Since these videos will eventually be posted on YouTube you should choose 1280 x 720.

You can edit the title slide the same way as you would in a Word document. Several options are available such as font face, size, and color. Additionally you may choose to use a graphic for your background. After you are finished editing your title slide, we then need to add media to your project.

Importing Media

Everything that you import into Camtasia (graphics, videos, audio) is stored into the Clip Bin for the project you are currently working on. To import media, find the button near the top of Camtasia that says Import media. From here you can select items individually or multiply by holding down CTRL and clicking on your items.

CTRL > Click multiple items in the same folderThis works best if your items are scattered in a

folder.SHIFT > Highlights multiple items in a row in the same folder

This works best if your items are all in a row.

Graphics

After you import the graphics into your clip bin, you can left click and drag them onto the timeline near the bottom of Camtasia. It is best to click and drag based on the order you want your pictures to appear to save time.

Moving Clips:If you make a mistake you can always click on a graphic and drag it to the desired location and everything after the new location will be shifted accordingly.

Deleting Clips:Clips you no longer want in your slideshow can be deleted easily. Make sure you have the clip you no longer want selected by left clicking on it. Then, right click on the slide and choose to Remove from timeline.

Shorten or Lengthen Clips:To extend the amount of time a graphic is on your slideshow highlight over the edge of the slide and click and drag in the location you desire.

Audio

There are two options to recording audio. You can record your audio right in Camtasia by selecting Tools | Voice Narration. As you are recording your audio from your script, it will appear on a different timeline than your images. If you recorded the audio in a different program (not recommended) you can import it into Camtasia into the clip bin. After you import the audio into your clip bin you can left click and drag it onto the timeline near the bottom of Camtasia. Camtasia automatically links Video 1, Callout, and Audio 1 together so that they stay in sync if they are moved on the timeline. By

clicking on the blue dot next to Video 1 you can unlink them and add audio to the first audio track, but there are three available in total.

Audio OptionsBy double clicking on the audio track, several options appear in the white space that allow you to edit the audio. To make things easier on yourself just use the editing tools on the bottom and ignore the global settings on top. Camtasia will automatically adjust the volume for you if click on volume up or down. Camtasia will also put a fade into your audio if you utilize their options. However, for the best results use audio points to control exactly how long of a fade you want or how quiet you want the audio to be.

Audio PointsAs soon as you place the audio onto your timeline there will be an audio point at the beginning of the audio track. To add another audio point to your slideshow click and drag the marker

to your desired spot and click on the Add audio point button in the white space. A small green dot will appear at the location. From here

you can left click the green dot to increase or decrease the audio. For example:

Fade In:The audio starts off quieter and gradually becomes louder.

Required points: 2

Drag the first point toward the bottom and place the second point at desired location.Silence:The audio stops for a period of time.

Required points: 4

Drag the second and third point down toward the bottom at desired location.

Audio points are necessary if you plan on using two audio tracks. Because you will be using two tracks, you need to decrease the volume of one track during the time another track is playing.

After you import the videos into your clip bin you can left click and drag them onto the timeline near the bottom of Camtasia. Any audio that is attached to the video will automatically be separated and placed into an audio track. It is important to leave Video 1, Callout, and Audio 1 linked together if you choose to use video because any editing will automatically sync the video and audio together.

Note: For if any reason your marker becomes separated and is causing you annoyance, double left click the gray part.

CuttingTo cut or trim your video left click and drag the marker to the area you want to remove. Then, click and drag

either the green or red square in the direction you want to remove. The highlighted area will be the space that is cut from the video.

Once the area is highlighted right click over the gray market and choose cut or use the cut button.

SplittingTo split your video in half left click and drag marker to the area you want to split. Then, right click the gray marker and select split. People typically split their videos when they want to add pictures or title slides between sections.

However, if you are splitting be sure that your video and audio are linked together. If it is not linked and you split to add a picture in the middle, this will happen:

Page 8: mabrito.netmabrito.net/41010/Using Camtasia Studio.docx · Web viewNarrated Slideshow using Camtasia 8 Using Camtasia Studio Use this tutorial as a guide for using Camtasia. If you

I split my video where the marker is placed, but because I did not have my video and audio linked, the picture only altered my video, but not my audio. This is what a correct split should look like with video and audio linked:

After moving the picture in the middle of my split, both the video and audio adjust appropriately based on the length of my picture.

Additional EditingCallouts and transitions can be added to your project to enhance it.

CalloutsAdd text in ready-made shapes like arrows, rectangles, and speech bubbles to visually communicate information. Customize fill color, line width, transparency, and other effects. Other styles include blur, spotlight, highlight, hotspots, keystrokes, and more.

To use a callout left click and drag the marker to the area you want the callout to be placed. Then, left click the Callouts button above the timeline. The preformatted shapes should be enough to work

with and offer a variety of possibilities. You can edit the callout both in the white space and on your video screen to change the size.

Once you place the callout, it is not permanently glued to the location. By left clicking the callout on your timeline and dragging it the callout can be placed at a different location.

TransitionsAdd a visual effect between clips to indicate the passage of time, a change in location, or to create a smooth flow between clips.

To use a transition left click the Transitions button. Then, left click a transition and drag it between two clips to include it in the final video. If you want to view the transition before selecting it, double left click a transition and click play to see an example.
