We couldn’t use Sir Elton’s “Can
You Feel the Love Tonight?” as a
‘one-hit wonder’ selection, since he
has topped the charts numerous
times—but it would have been so
appropriate to describe Broadway’s
ministries. From pastoral care to
fellowship events, the love and
caring experienced here is, well, very
feel-able!
Last week’s Vacation Bible
School was a perfect example: over
100 volunteers—that is a ratio of
almost 1:1 for every registered child.
Many parents were able to help due
to the evening schedule, but there
were also plenty of non-parent
helpers, from teens to grandparents
to just plain caring adults.
VBS is just the most recent
testament to the Broadway Spirit. In
each ministry area, there is a river of
compassion and Christian caring
running through it. Below are some
ways that several of our ministry
areas express and extend that
compassion—and each ministry can
always use some extra hands and
hearts.
The Compassionate Care Team
This ministry team was
formalized two years ago, but has
been operating informally for all of
Broadway’s 58 years! Simply put,
this group comprises the
card-senders, the flower-givers, the
phone-callers, the home-visitors—all
of those people who serve as the
hugs and smiles of Broadway.
The Care Team has been
organized into groups who enjoy
doing one or more of those
important, yet so simple, acts of
compassion. If you would like to join
the team, there will be a meeting on
Monday, August 25, at 6:30 p.m. in
the Large Conference Room. Visit
with Mary Cunningham about this
ministry or contact Debby at
[email protected] for more
information. See a related article on
our Flower Ministry on page seven.
Making Connections
For years, Broadway’s
Connections Ministry was known as
Fellowship Ministry, denoting the
team’s responsibility for organizing
our potlucks and church dinners.
The name was changed a few years
ago to reflect the full scope of this
ministry.
Food is still a big part of
Connections, but food is only a tool
to bring people together in large and
small gatherings—building
relationships and connection. In a
church with three distinctly different
services, it is important to find ways
to mesh those groups into one big,
happy Broadway family.
Connecting with our members
doesn’t just happen in the kitchen.
Many of our Connections team
members helped out at VBS. Game
nights, movie nights—all are ways to
establish and build relationships with
Broadway members.
Connections Ministry will hold its
first meeting of the new church year
on Tuesday, August 19, at 5:30 p.m.
in the Large Conference Room. If
you’d like to join the team, or just find
out more, contact Judy Letourneau,
Vanessa Cox or Debby in the office.

2 ON BROADWAY…. with Pastor Tim Carson
Just recently, I was deployed by
the Raptor Rehab Center to pick up an
injured owl. It was a young Barred owl
who had broken a wing. The location
was a few miles south of Jeff City,
along the river in a little town that time
probably never knew in the first place,
Osage City. Not Osage Beach, but
Osage City.
I retrieved the critter from the home
of a fellow who found the owl injured
and on his property. He had created a
make shift shelter to hold him and then
called the Raptor Rehab emergency
line. I then fielded the request for
pickup and cruised down to the river to
pick him up, transport box and gloves
in hand.
After retrieving and boxing our
feathered friend, I drove him back to
Columbia, passing through Jefferson
City and not stopping at Central Dairy.
Yes, that’s how devoted I was. Upon
arrival at the University of Missouri
Veterinary School hospital, I dropped
off the owl into the capable hands of
those who would do surgery on the
wing. If he heals well, the Raptor
Rehab Center will return him to the
wild.
Since the one who picks up a
rescue bird has naming rights, I
dubbed our new owl General Price
after General Sterling Price, the
Missouri Confederate Civil War
general who prevailed at Wilson’s
Creek and then at the First Battle of
Lexington. Price was
fresh on my mind
following a little
Missouri Civil War
tour with friends.
As I reflected on
the chain of
connections from
injured bird to
protection to
repaired wing, I counted all the links.
There was the kind man in Osage City
who bothered to care and call for help.
There was the middle man, me, who
transported. There is the program
itself, without which none of this would
have happened. There is the hospital
and its doctors, at the ready to
respond. There is a rehab program
whose mission is to protect
endangered species and, when
possible, return injured birds to the
wild. That’s a lot of links.
And that is, I think, the way the
Good is manifested in the world,
through a series of relationships, links
and connections like that. When we
say that God works in the world, I think
we mean something like this: that in
the process of connecting the best and
holiest, healing can manifest through
all these open connections. Of course,
the worst may also travel connected
corridors with the aid of those who
enable it.
For us in the
Christian
community, faith
means something
like this, making
ourselves
available to be
links, to play a
part, to be part of
the grand solution
that is more than
any one of us but
requires and
depends on all of us. Putting ourselves
at the disposal of God, at the disposal
of love, at the disposal of a process
that is bigger than us gives so much
purpose and purpose together.
In short, that’s Broadway’s story,
too. Almost everything of significance
around here takes place in roughly the
same way. And like our owl who
moves from hopelessness to hope, we
make new life possible time and again.
Good to be your pastor, Broadway.
Tim

3 Calendar Highlights
Fifth Street Christian
Church has been a
partner in ministry with
Broadway for more than
five years now. Many
Broadway members
have spent a Saturday
morning or afternoon
helping with the monthly
Feed the Community
outreach, which offers a
free meal to the central
city neighborhood and anyone else
who enjoys good cooking. This
outreach is just one of the ministries
at Fifth Street that reaches out to
their neighbors, offering a hand up
and a warm smile to go with it!
To assist our Fifth Street
brothers and sisters with their
outreach efforts, Broadway will
provide the venue for the second
annual Feed the Community Benefit
Concert on Friday, August
15. There will be much singing,
much dancing, much praising and
much to enjoy throughout the
evening. Performers will come from
churches throughout central
Missouri, and if you attended last
year’s concert, you know that there
are some awfully good local singers
and dancers.
The concert will begin at 7:00
p.m. in the Christian Life Center,
with a reception following in the
Fellowship Hall. But you will want to
come early and get a head start on
the Silent Auction items, including
items from the Kansas City Royals
and Chiefs! There were more than
25 auction items last year, and we
expect to have even more this year.
The 2013 concert raised over
$2600 for Fifth Street outreach
ministries. The continuing success
of these ministries, from buying new
shoes for school to baskets of food
at Christmas to the monthly Feed
the Community meal, depends on
the success of the benefit
concert. Spend a Friday evening
with Fifth Street and Broadway,
meet new friends and support a
ministry that matters to so many!

New Carols for Advent is a
collection of carols that may sound
familiar—the compositions were
featured in our Advent services, and
were written by Pastor Tim Carson and
Charlie Kyriakos. The carols are now
published as a collection and may be
shared with congregations worldwide! If
you would like your own copy of New
Carols for Advent, the book is available
at Chalice Press,

Back 2 School BASH Signals Start of School Year Raise your hand if you’re
ready for school to start
(parents, put your hands
down!). No one…oh, well.
So now, Broadway
Youth, raise your hand if
you’re ready for the Back 2
School BASH on Sunday,
August 17, at Lazer
Lanes. Now that’s more
like it!
It’s a Broadway tradition –
before school starts, we have a
giant party, invite our youth, invite
even more youth from local
churches and turn the end of
summer into the beginning of
another year of youth gatherings,
outreach and special events.
The BASH gets underway at
6:00 p.m. at Lazer Lanes, our 2013
location which worked out so well,
the BASH is back for 2014! You
can purchase your tickets early at
a discounted rate—$12.50 for an
individual or $25 for two or more
siblings. Admission at the door on
the day of the BASH will be $15
per person.
And what does your ticket
entitle you to do? So glad you
asked—bowling, lazer tag,
basketball, games, live music, food
and an awesome worship to end
the evening.
Bring your friends and
enjoy the fun and fellowship
at the BASH. Get your
tickets early to take
advantage of the discount!
The Living Word Study Group
will offer a special session on
Sunday, August 24, to hear invited
speaker Larry Brown discuss the
Inter-Testamental Period. The
group has been studying the history
of the writing of the Old Testament
since January, and will focus on
New Testament history beginning in
September.
The August 24 session will
explore the 400 years between the
closure of the Old Testament
scriptures and the life of Jesus.
Larry will talk about how the
political events leading up to the
time of Jesus helped set the stage
for the emergence of Christianity.
Visitors are welcome to join us
in the Large Conference Room at
10:10 for the fifty-minute session,
which will include group discussion.

Notary Needed for
Annual Consent Forms
The Back to School BASH
is a great opportunity to take
care of some required annual
business for our youth—the
signing of the Parental Consent
Form. Signing an annual form
means that no additional
permission form is necessary tol
allow participation in most off-site
activities.
One problem—these annual
forms must be notarized. If you
are a notary and can donate your
services during the BASH, please
contact Jen Barb at 445.5312.
On September 7 during worship,
we want to hear about your
experience at the water's
edge. There will be an opportunity
for you to speak about any waters
you visited, experienced
and bottled this year on your
journeys and to ceremoniously
blend them with those collected by
others. If you plan to bring water,
please leave a message for Terry
at the church office, 445.5312 or att

5 SERVICE/MISSION & OUTREACH
Over the past 50
years, Woodhaven’s
amazing volunteers,
families, neighbors,
employees and
community partners
have left their mark.
They have guided the
direction of the
organization and
helped it grow and
evolve to meet the needs of the
individuals they serve and support,
and the expectations of the
community that has embraced them
over the years.
Through the care and dedication
of many individuals, families, groups
and faith communities, the
individuals with developmental
disabilities that are supported by
Woodhaven have found success and
independence. They are proud to
live in this community and respected
by their neighbors, employers and
friends. The face of ability is
changing, due to the efforts of
Woodhaven and its supporters.
Broadway’s outreach ministry has
long supported the work of
Woodhaven, and we have all been
invited to help them celebrate their
50 year anniversary. Join them for
an Open House Reception at
Parkade Plaza on Saturday, August
23 from 1:30–3:30 p.m.
All guests will be treated to a
special performance by the
Columbia Parks and Recreation Bell
Choir (featuring several original
members of Woodhaven’s famous
Hand Bell Choir), an appearance by
Dick Hoyt of Team Hoyt. Most
importantly, cake and
refreshments.
Guests will also be invited
to share their own Woodhaven
memories and stories
throughout the afternoon event.
So bring a box of tissues
and get ready to share
laughter, tears and memories
with us all afternoon! This
event is free and open to the
public, so please join the gathering!
Woodhaven will also host a
celebratory Dinner and Gala on
August 23 at 6:00 p.m. at the
University Club to commemorate its
golden anniversary featuring a
special keynote presentation by Dick
Hoyt. Reserve a table of ten for
$500, or purchase a single ticket for
$50. More information about all
events is available at

6 CHILDREN & YOUTH MINISTRIES
Bible Times at Broadway Was a Blast from the Past! What can we say? It was
AWESOME! Over 100 volunteers
working with 108 children from age
four through grade four.
And while our children were
learning about life in Jesus’ time,
they were helping other children
prepare for school in our time!
During the four days of VBS, our
children collected $1447.19 for
school kits that will be distributed
through Church World Services.

Broadway Flower Delivery
Team delivers the Sanctuary’s
Chancel table flowers to
homebound, shut-ins, and
anyone recovering from surgery or
a health condition. As of July 27,
we are delivering flowers to 28
church members and have a team
of ten volunteers, using two
volunteers to deliver to four homes
each Sunday.
We would like to recruit five
more volunteers. A schedule for
two months is created, so you only
have to deliver flowers once every
two months. (that is, if we have 15
volunteers).
The flowers make beautiful
bouquets and they are always so
appreciated. The visit is also very
important. It is very rewarding to be
involved in this ministry. The
flowers can be picked up after
12:15 p.m. on Sunday or on
Monday. Please contact Margaret
Berends (573) 445.4207
([email protected]) for
more information or to volunteer.

I started my first journal
when I was seven years old. It
was private with a little lock. I
wrote things like, "Autoharp
lesson today. I hate my
teacher!" (It was the 1970s;
autoharp lessons were a thing!)
I also wrote, "I love you, God
and Jesus."
Now that I'm in my mid-forties,
I'm ready to be more public with
my words and my faith. Instead of
only keeping journals, I'm
publishing on blogs and in books.
I'm still writing things like "I love
you, God." (I no longer need to
write about hating my autoharp
teacher these days!)

This project will combine two loves:
my love of God and my love of
creating crochet and knitting.
Slowing down to do a handicraft is
a perfect counterpoint to our
modern fast-paced, always-on
culture. As many crafters know,
creative time can be an opportunity
for deepening our relationship with
the divine.
I'm excited about this project
because it will start as a blog
that will be turned into a book
once I'm finished in September
2015.
I would love to hear from all the
creative women we have at
Broadway who are doing crafts
and incorporate your stories into
the devotionals. Let's visit together
and talk about our love for God
and creativity! If you enjoy writing,
please consider writing a guest
devotional for the blog.
Whether as a reader, story sharer
or guest blogger, I hope you will
join me on this journey to celebrate
craft and our Creator!
