Design is all around us. The designs we use shape how we act and even think. Since their design dictates how products are produced, used and disposed of, design also shapes our impact on our planet.

What concepts do your students want to make real in their designs? Exploring these three core ideas will help students make the most of their creativity. They’re also important criteria for entering our great competition!

OUR DESIGN Handle hides inside so you can sit on top

Rounded corners so it doesn’t damage things or hurt people

Sized to fit airline cabin luggage restrictions

Machined aluminium wheels with rubber tyres. These can retract inside to save space.

Wheels far apart for stability and swivel so it’s manoeuvrable

Pressed aluminium sheet makes a strong seat. Extra foam makes it comfortable.

Extruded aluminium frame

These parts grip the side material which can be clamped and riveted in place so it is strong and secure

This section makes it strong and rigid

Outer aluminium protects corners and edges from rubbing

Cross section of frame:

Rounded corner joints made from forged or cast aluminium

Extra frame for wheels

Outer kevlar® layer for strength and security Outside

Inside

Foam middle for protection and padding

Inner layer is soft but resilient for attaching inner dividers using velcro®-style hook material

Elastic has velcro® ends and can be positioned to hold clothes in place

Dividers organise the contents and can go anywhere. They are made from the same material as the inner layer of the sides. They stick to the soft inner material and to each other using velcro hooks. Different sizes can be bought.

Lids also attach with velcro® and keep small items in place. They can be mesh or smell and damp proof.

Sides are a sandwich of three materials

Inner layer of side material lets you position dividers, lids and elastic wherever you want
