REFLEXIÓN DEL DOMINGO
Al comenzar el Tiempo Ordinario del Año, las lecturas nos re-
cuerdan algunos temas que escuchamos durante la temporada
navideña. Indican varios temas sobre la manifestación del Espíri-
tu Santo en la nueva era inaugurada por Jesucristo. Un tema
general es la renovación.
En la primera lectura, el profeta Isaías utiliza metáforas poéticas
que apuntan a la renovación del pueblo de Dios. En ese llamado
a la renovación, Dios promete dar a su pueblo un nombre nuevo:
“Mi deleite”. El Señor te desposará; te hará su novia y se deleita-
rá en ti como el novio se deleita en su novia. Esa metáfora del
matrimonio describe una nueva relación con Dios que transforma
nuestra humillación y nos lleva a la exaltación y triunfo gozoso.
Toda esa novedad es de Dios, que crea un pueblo nuevo; una
tierra nueva de la desolación; una nueva comunidad llena del
Espíritu. En el pasaje evangélico, el milagro de Jesús de conver-
tir el agua en vino, es una metáfora de la transformación del
mundo realizada en el anuncio del reino, en el ministerio de Je-
sús que ahora comienza públicamente.
La Iglesia ha visto tradicionalmente esta primera señal de Jesús
como la cuarta manifestación en secuencia desde la Navidad, la
Epifanía y el Bautismo del Señor, a la que sigue la historia de las
Bodas de Caná. En este evento, Dios revela nuevamente a su
Hijo en el contexto de una relación matrimonial. Él obra el primer
milagro para dar un favor temporal, un regalo terrenal para salvar
de la vergüenza a un novio recién casado.
El milagro es también una auto manifestación de quién es Jesús.
Así como Él puede cambiar el agua en vino, igualmente Él puede
cambiar nuestro pasado en un futuro diferente; nuestros talentos
en dones maravillosos para la Iglesia. Jesús transforma vidas

SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION
As we begin the Ordinary Time of the Year, the read-
ings remind us of some themes we heard over the
Christmas season. They outline several themes on the
manifestation of the Holy Spirit in the new era inaugurated
by Jesus Christ. One overarching theme is renewal.
In the first reading, the prophet Isaiah uses poetic
metaphors that point to the renewal of God’s people. In that
call for renewal, God promises to give his people a new
name: “My Delight”. The Lord will espouse you; make you
his bride and delight in you as a bridegroom delights in his
bride. That marriage metaphor describes a new relation-
ship with God that transforms our humiliation and setbacks
to exaltation and joyful triumph.
All that newness is from God who creates a new peo-
ple; a new land out of desolation; a new Spirit-filled com-
munity. In the Gospel passage, the miracle of changing
water into wine by Jesus is a metaphor for the transfor-
mation of the world realized in the proclamation of the king-
dom, in the ministry of Jesus that now begins publicly.
The Church has traditionally seen this first sign by Je-
sus as the fourth manifestation in sequence since Christ-
mas, Epiphany, and the Baptism of the Lord, which is fol-
lowed by the story of the Marriage at Cana. In this event,
God reveals his Son again in the context of a marriage re-
lationship. He works the first miracle in order to give a tem-
poral favor, an earthly gift to save a newly married groom
from embarrassment.
The miracle is also a self-manifestation of who Jesus
is. Just as He can change water into wine, similarly He can
change our past into a different future and our talents into
wonderful gifts for the Church. Jesus transforms ordinary
lives to accomplish an extraordinary mission of entering
into communion with Him and the Triune God.

� The Wedding Feast of Cana and the Springtime of Grace�
This week we resume the reflections upon lessons from the life of Mary and in particular focus upon the wedding feast at
Cana. After Jesus’ baptism and 40-day preparation in the desert, some disciples joined Him knowing that He could give them
truths from heaven. When Mary attended a wedding in Cana in Galilee, she asked Jesus and His disciples to join her and the
family.
In that era, Jewish wedding feasts lasted for up to a week; and sometime during that week, the wine started to run short.
Mary, ever attentive to the needs of others, brought the problem to Jesus. Jesus seemed at first reluctant to perform a mira-
cle, saying that His hour had not yet come. As the great American evangelist Bishop Fulton Sheen described, Jesus was
pointing out to Mary that, if she asked for this miracle, His public ministry would begin and with it His way to Calvary.
Mary did ask for the miracle, saying, to the waiters “Do whatever He tells you.” Jesus then had the waiters fill with water large
jars that were meant for washing and take it to the headwaiter. The waiters, probably thinking that it was complete folly or a
joke, did so all the same.
Likely worrying about the wine situation and not knowing what has just been happening, the head waiter was astonished to
taste this former water, which Jesus had made the best of wine. Thinking that the families have been hiding their best wine,
he sought an explanation from the groom, who was himself as puzzled and happily surprised as the head waiter. This mira-
cle, which joins Marian and family devotion, compassion, humility, and even humor, launched Jesus’ public ministry.
In this event, we can see God reversing the Fall and original sin. Instead of Eve’s attentiveness to the serpent and tempta-
tion, Mary teaches us to be attentive to families and the needs of others. Reversing the failure of Adam and Eve to turn to
God in prayer when they were being tempted and then when they sinned, Mary shows us how to turn to Jesus and be willing
to abide by His instructions, knowing them to be the path (often in mysterious ways) to great joy.
Making up for Adam’s weakness and failure to resist sin, Jesus clarifies the issue for Mary, and then is willing to perform, in a
subtle way, the miracle she requested. Remembering the cooperation in sin, and then conflict in blame, of Adam and Eve, the
new Adam and Eve cooperate for a new couple. And, if we are willing, they will also cooperate together for our families and
the family of God to bring forth a new springtime of grace.
Las Bodas de Caná y la Primavera de Gracia�
Esta semana retomamos las reflexiones sobre las lecciones de la vida de María y en particular nos enfocamos en las bo-
das de Caná. Después del bautismo de Jesús y la preparación de 40 días en el desierto, algunos discípulos se unieron a Él
sabiendo que Él podía darles verdades del cielo. Cuando María asistió a una boda en Caná de Galilea, le pidió a Jesús y a
sus discípulos que se unieran a ella y a la familia.
En esa época, las fiestas de bodas judías duraban hasta una semana; y en algún momento durante esa semana, el vino
comenzó a agotarse. María, siempre atenta a las necesidades de los demás, llevó el problema a Jesús. Al principio, Jesús
parecía negativo a realizar un milagro, diciendo que aún no había llegado su hora. Como describió el gran evangelista esta-
dounidense, el obispo Fulton Sheen, Jesús le estaba señalando a María que, si ella pedía este milagro, comenzaría su
ministerio público y, con él, su camino al Calvario.
María pidió el milagro, diciendo a los sirvientes: "Hagan lo que Él les diga". Entonces Jesús hizo que los sirvientes llena-
ran con agua grandes tinajas que estaban destinadas para lavar y se las llevaran al jefe de sirvientes. Ellos probablemente
pensando que era una completa locura o una broma, lo hicieron de todos modos.
Probablemente preocupado por la situación del vino y sin saber lo que acababa de suceder, el jefe de sirvientes se
asombró al probar esta antigua agua, que Jesús había hecho el mejor vino. Pensando que la familia habían estado escon-
diendo su mejor vino, buscó una explicación del novio, que estaba tan desconcertado y felizmente sorprendido como el jefe
de sirvientes. Este milagro, que une la devoción mariana y familiar, la compasión, la humildad e incluso el humor, puso en
marcha el ministerio público de Jesús.
En este evento, podemos ver a Dios regresando la Caída y el pecado original. En lugar de la atención de Eva a la ser-
piente y la tentación, María nos enseña a estar atentos a las familias y las necesidades de los demás. Al revertir el fracaso
de Adán y Eva de volverse a Dios en oración cuando estaban siendo tentados y luego cuando pecaron, María nos muestra
cómo volvernos a Jesús y estar dispuestos a cumplir Sus instrucciones, sabiendo que son el camino (a veces en caminos
misteriosos) con gran alegría.
Recordando la debilidad y el fracaso de Adán para resistir el pecado, Jesús le aclara el problema a María, y luego está
dispuesto a realizar, de manera sutil, el milagro que ella pidió. Recordando la cooperación en el pecado, y luego el conflicto

Scripture Study: Reflection question:
The Gospel of John is filled with signs that reveal the identity of Jesus. The first of these signs takes place at a wedding in Cana (John 2:1-
11). What role does Mary play in this first sign?
1.-Although Jesus had not yet performed a public miracle, Mary, by simply saying to her Son, "They have no wine," trusted that Jesus
would resolve the issue, thereby saving the wedding couple from the shame of not having enough wine to serve their guests. By this quiet
statement to her Son, Mother Mary introduces her Son's ministry to the public.
2.-Mary was chosen to bring Jesus into this world in Bethlehem and she chose to bring Him into His public life at Cana. What a beautiful
introduction!
3.-Mary is so essential in this miracle. She relayed the problem to Jesus that the wine had run out. He understood from her that this was an
important matter not only to her but to the couple whose wedding it was. She showed her complete trust in Him by saying, "Do whatever He
tells you". This is a lesson to us. I think that Mary is a wonderful mediator between Jesus and us. It connects us more deeply to Him through
her too. Mary also teaches us to completely trust in Jesus even though we don't know the outcome. This was Jesus' first miracle and I love
the idea that Mary, our mother, was involved in it too. He listened to her and showed His great respect and love for her also. I wonder if Je-
sus knew when He went to the wedding what would be asked of Him? This certainly set His ministry in motion.
4.-In the wedding of Cana, Mary plays several roles:
a).-Intercessor: As she still fulfills this role even today, Mary intervenes and intercedes to her Son, Jesus, on behalf of the couple, who
are clearly in need.
b).-The New Eve: In Genesis 3, Eve prompted Adam to defy the Lord, thus plunging humanity into sin and loss of friendship with
God. At Cana, Mary prompts Jesus, the new Adam, to begin His mission of the salvation of humanity.
c).-Mary Launches Jesus into Public Ministry: Most importantly, with the words, "They have no wine", Mary literally provides the launch-
ing point for Jesus to begin his public ministry and his mission to bring about the reign of the Kingdom of God. Jn 2:11 tells us that "This, the
first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory: and his disciples believed in him." Mary's four little words would
serve to initiate a chain of events that would bring about the salvation of humanity through the passion and death of her Son.
5.-Mary's role at the wedding in Cana is her example of complete trust in Jesus. When I have a problem, I tend to worry and worry and go
on and on obsessing over "my dilemma of the day" to Our Lord in prayer ad nauseam. Mary's spoken words to her son are also her pray-
er. It is so simple and trusting - "They have no wine." That's it! She let Jesus know what the problem was and left it in His hands with com-
plete confidence that He will resolve the problem. Next, Mary simply says to the wedding servants, "Do whatever He tells you." The wedding
servants may have scratched their heads on that one, not knowing who Jesus was at that time. But we do! What powerful advice to live by
"Do whatever He tells you." Life can be so much simpler and easier and less stressful if we just look to Mary as our example to simply trust
and obey.
Estudio de las Escrituras: Pregunta de reflexión:
El Evangelio de Juan está lleno de signos que revelan la identidad de Jesús. La primera de estas señales tiene lugar en una boda en Caná
(Juan 2:1-11). ¿Qué papel juega María en este primer signo?
1.-Aunque Jesús aún no había realizado un milagro público, María, con sólo decirle a su Hijo: "No tienen vino", confió en que Jesús resol-
vería el problema, salvando así a los novios de la vergüenza de no tener suficiente vino. para atender a sus invitados. Mediante esta tranquila
declaración a su Hijo, la Madre María presenta el ministerio de su Hijo al público.
2.-María fue escogida para traer a Jesús a este mundo en Belén y eligió traerlo a Su vida pública en Caná. ¡Qué hermosa introducción!
3.-María es tan esencial en este milagro. Ella le transmitió el problema a Jesús de que se había acabado el vino. Él entendió por ella que
este era un asunto importante no solo para ella sino también para la pareja cuya boda era. Ella mostró su completa confianza en Él al decir:
"Haced lo que Él os diga". Esta es una lección para nosotros. Pienso que María es una maravillosa mediadora entre Jesús y nosotros. Nos
conecta más profundamente con Él a través de ella también. María también nos enseña a confiar completamente en Jesús aunque no sepa-
mos el resultado. Este fue el primer milagro de Jesús y me encanta la idea de que María, nuestra madre, también estuvo involucrada en él. Él
la escuchó y mostró su gran respeto y amor por ella también. Me pregunto si Jesús sabía cuándo fue a la boda lo que se le pediría. Esto cier-
tamente puso en marcha Su ministerio.
4.-En las bodas de Caná, María juega varios papeles:

c).-María lanza a Jesús al ministerio público: Lo más importante, con las palabras, "No tienen vino", María literalmente proporciona el
punto de partida para que Jesús comience su ministerio público y su misión de lograr el reinado del Reino de Dios. Jn 2,11 nos dice que
"Esta, la primera de sus señales, la hizo Jesús en Caná de Galilea, y manifestó su gloria, y sus discípulos creyeron en él". Las cuatro palabri-
tas de María servirían para iniciar una cadena de acontecimientos que llevarían a cabo la salvación de la humanidad a través de la pasión y
muerte de su Hijo.
5.-El papel de María en las bodas de Caná es su ejemplo de plena confianza en Jesús. Cuando tengo un problema, tiendo a preocuparme
y preocuparme y sigo y sigo obsesionándome con "mi dilema del día" a Nuestro Señor en oración hasta la saciedad. Las palabras de María a
