A GREAT TIME TO BE IN THE CATTLE INDUSTRY

This spring, as we saw replacement heifer prices start to increase, there was a lot of skepticism. As the spring progressed, prices continued to increase and we’re currently looking forward to a very strong fall calf market.

So where does this leave cattle producers? Do you retain heifers? Sell? Feed them out? Currently all sound like very good options. However, if you are planning to stay in the cattle business replacements are needed. Either through retention of heifer calves or the purchase of quality bred heifers. Artificially inseminated (A.I.) bred heifers will add value to your owned replacements or to that group of heifers you are purchasing or selling. As always, a uniform calf crop will return more profitability. That is why Genex is constantly working with research facilities to find ways to improve conception rates.

Employee Spotlight

Scott MacDonald began working with Genex in the summer of 2013 as the Distribution/Beef Support Manager. In this role, he consults with customers and sales representatives to determine sires that will best suit individual operations. Scott is passionate about the beef business in Canada.

He grew up on a commercial cow/calf operation in Puslinch, Ontario; where he and his fiancé now raise Angus, Hereford and commercial cattle. Scott earned an associate diploma in agriculture from the University of Guelph, Ridgetown campus. Throughout his education, and since graduation, Scott has worked on various beef operations and has been able to expand his knowledge and experience in the industry.

CRI to House Bulls at Canada’s Foundation Genetics

Foundation Genetics and CRI have entered into a service agreement to have Foundation Genetics house and provide semen collection services for a number of bulls owned by Genex.

“Marketing cattle genetics worldwide is an integral part of business for Genex and CRI. Transferring a set of dairy and beef sires to a Canadian custom collection facility is in concert with the Genex board’s strategic plan to mitigate potential risks associated with the international marketplace,” states Peter Giacomini, CRI Vice President of Business Development. “In this instance, producing Genex genetics in Canada provides international marketing opportunities should U.S. semen exports be interrupted.”

Giacomini goes on to say, “Foundation Genetics is qualified to ship semen worldwide, possesses a state of the art facility and upholds industry-leading standards for bull care, collection, semen quality and handling.”

Douglas Dann, Foundation Genetics Manager, and the company owners state, “Foundation Genetics is pleased to be working with a global A.I. organization such as CRI and facilitating their first major step in non-U.S. production at our Listowel, Ontario facility.”

CRI and Foundation Genetics will continue to operate independent of one another in their genetic and marketing programs; this agreement does not include joint distribution or sales.

Kuck Retires After 38 Years with Genex

Al Kuck retired February 21 after nearly four decades of employment with Genex and its predecessor cooperatives.

“Al has served cooperative

members in numerous capacities, most recently as Vice President of Beef Programs,” states Keith Heikes,

Genex Chief Operating Officer. “During his tenure in the beef division, Al was accountable for Genex custom semen collection, beef sire procurement and initiatives to grow beef programs. In fact, he contributed to domestic and international beef genetics market share growth from 13% and 8% to over 28% and 34% respectively.”

Initially, Al had begun his cattle genetics career within the dairy industry. He was hired by Genex predecessor Midwest Breeders Cooperative as Breeding

Programs Manager-Dairy. He was later promoted to Vice President of Genetic Services and then held the position Vice President of Dairy Genetics for 21st Century Genetics before accepting a role in beef programs with the formation of Genex.

His role within Genex beef programs led to professional affiliations with the Wisconsin Cattlemen’s Association and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. Al also served on the National Association of Animal Breeders board of directors and committees.

CRI Buys Animal Reproductive Technologies Company

CRI has finalized the purchase of the primary assets of MOFA Global, formerly known as Minitube of America. MOFA Global is one of the world’s leaders in the development, manufacturing and marketing of artificial insemination and embryo transfer products and technologies for the porcine, bovine, equine and canine industries. The company now stands as the third subsidiary of CRI, alongside AgSource and Genex.

“The purchase of MOFA Global is the largest single step CRI has taken to further increase our influence in production agriculture,” states Doug Wilson, CRI CEO. “The subsequent expansion of CRI core business areas continues to set this organization apart from the rest of the industry.”

Back in 1993, CRI became known as the nation’s first direct link between a dairy herd improvement organization and a provider of bovine artificial insemination service, organizations now known as AgSource and Genex. Today, with the addition of MOFA Global, CRI adds to its distinctiveness creating new business relationships particularly within the porcine industry as well as those specialized in reproduction in other species.

“Furthermore, MOFA Global’s International Center for Biotechnology provides CRI with a direct research connection and fast forwards our dedication to advancing internal research through business development,” states Wilson.

Since establishing the International Center for Biotechnology in Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin, in 2004, MOFA Global has conducted cutting-edge research spanning several animal species and specifically focused on advanced reproductive technologies, molecular and cell biology, and DNA and genomics research.

MOFA Global was established in 1986 by Ludwig and Becky Simmet. Within the CRI structure, Ludwig Simmet will continue to lead MOFA Global as this new subsidiary’s chief operating officer.

Fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) has been used in Saskatchewan seedstock operations for several years. Key benefits of this technology have been: access to superior genetics that would otherwise be unaffordable, the use of proven sires with high accuracy EPDs and a shortening of calving periods.

The same benefits realized by the seedstock sector are also available to commercial producers, but is FTAI affordable? Will it be too much of a hassle to handle animals at least three times to complete the synchronization protocol? Will it result in enough extra pounds of weaned calf to make it worthwhile? A project funded by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture’s Agriculture Demonstration of Practices and Technologies (ADOPT) program aimed to answer these questions.

In spring 2012, Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture Regional Livestock Specialists and Colin Palmer, associate professor at Western College of Veterinary Medicine, worked with three commercial cattle operations in Saskatchewan to determine how profitable these technologies would be when compared to current production systems.

At each location, 40 to 60 heifers were identified for inclusion in the project. All heifers were rectally palpated by a veterinarian prior to the project and any animals with reproductive challenges were removed. Half of the heifers were put into a natural service treatment group; the remaining animals were placed in a progesterone implant based FTAI treatment group and received an EAZI-BREED™ CIDR® while in the chute. The animals in the FTAI group were worked through the chute a total of three times – after seven days to remove the CIDR and on day nine for insemination. Each producer selected the sire to be used for A.I., the natural service group was bred to bulls of the same breed already owned by the respective producer. A.I. was performed by an experienced technician. Approximately 10 days after insemination the FTAI group was turned in with a cleanup bull to breed any that did not become pregnant to A.I. The total animal handling time commitment for this synchronization protocol was approximately three hours per herd. Producers at each location indicated with every time through the chute the animals were easier to handle.

Conception rates to A.I. ranged from 61 to 76 percent with an average of 67 percent across all three herds. A definite weaning weight advantage was evident for the A.I. group. This advantage ranged from 16 to 174 lbs with an average 72 pound advantage for the A.I. group. Using an average calf price for steers and heifers of $1.55 per pound (typical of 2013 fall prices), there is an economic advantage of $112 dollars per calf. The total cost for FTAI during this project, including all drugs, semen, A.I. technician fee and cleanup bull was approximately $89 per heifer. This is approximately $15 to $20 more per calf than the cost of recent estimates when using a $4000 bull for natural service on heifers. This assumes four years of use with calves produced over the lifetime of that bull, including his maintenance and salvage value. Even when considering these costs, the FTAI treatment still showed an average economic advantage of approximately $94 a head over natural service.

Besides an increased value in the calf crop, FTAI has several other potential benefits. The A.I. bred animals calved in the first 10 days of the calving season. These heifers will have more time to recover from calving before they have to rebreed. If they are kept as replacements, heifer calves born to genetically superior A.I. sires will likely be more productive females in the future. The producers involved in this project also reported animals in the FTAI group were more docile at calving as a result of being handled more.

If producers have herd improvement goals, using FTAI is a fast and efficient way to make the necessary changes to meet those goals. Although using FTAI on commercial heifers is not a conventional practice in Saskatchewan, this project has shown it can be a very profitable endeavor, easily rivalling natural service. FTAI in the commercial setting should not be overlooked, it is another useful tool producers can use to improve the production of their operation without having to expand their land base or cow herd.

Artificial insemination (A.I.) is something that can be incorporated into virtually any operation. Many cattlemen are reluctant though, because of their lack of time, absence of technical expertise, perceived increases in cost, inadequate handling facilities and fear of poor results. However, my collaborators, Colby Elford and Travis Peardon, from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture, and I have successfully demonstrated how implementing A.I. will rival the alternative, natural service. We have shown producers that hiring experts, employing fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) technology and using a modest chute system is a productive way to boost a breeding program.

We recognize producers’ time is valuable and sourcing additional labor can be problematic. Therefore, we pride ourselves on using simple, yet effective, FTAI protocols. Many protocols are available, however, in order to limit the labor we focus on protocols with less number of times through the chute. Our goal is to choose one with a maximum of three times through the chute, including breeding. This is one consideration for trying to keep it simple when implementing a synchronization program.

Representatives from Genex have been invaluable to our producers, helping with sire selection and providing technical expertise. Establishing that good working relationship with your A.I. technician is a key to success. Coordinating a protocol schedule with the technician and working with them prior to beginning is crucial. It helps ensure semen is available when you need it and the technician is ready to breed on insemination day.

The cornerstone of a synchronization program is the use of a progesterone-containing vaginal implant (EAZI-BREED™

CIDR®) coupled with an injection of prostaglandin at CIDR removal. While it is possible to synchronize breeding without this, the precise control of follicular development, estrous display and ovulation will not be as consistent. Additionally, lower than expected conception rates are likely. Thus, utilizing CIDRs in a synchronization program poses many benefits. Pregnancy results show progesterone exposure benefits non-cycling cows, cows beginning to cycle post calving and heifers on the verge of cycling.

When using a CIDR, gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH) or an estradiol product should be administered at the time of insertion to elicit a new follicular wave. In our research we utilize estradiol benzoate, a compounded product available only from licensed pharmacies. Due to cost and effectiveness we continue to use it, despite public perception regarding the use of estrogen-containing hormones in food animals. Therefore, others choose to use GnRH, which we do administer, but at the time of insemination to ensure ovulation. No matter the product of choice, in order to obtain it or any other product used in synchronization programs, a veterinary prescription is required in Canada.

Although results vary, in our experience most first time users of A.I. can expect at least half of their A.I. group to become pregnant to a single insemination – 66 to 75 percent and higher in some cases. This also tightens the calving window as most will calve over a two week period versus a month or more with a natural service group.

When all of this is considered the financial costs of incorporating A.I. into a commercial herd can easily be recouped with the added benefit of genetically superior offspring generated through the use of high quality A.I. sires.
