Canadian Shrimp Fishery
• 2014 Landings of 131,036 MT with an export value of $694,000,000 – Export value increase from 2013 of $166 Million
• 2015 Landings higher with a slight TAC increase and export value expected to be higher with significantly improved market prices.
• Northern Shrimp: 17 Offshore licenses and approximately 300 inshore.
• Gulf: Approximately 100 licence holders. • Scotian Shelf 35 licenses (92% mobile, 8% trap)
Newfoundland and Labrador Fishery
• Value – Approximately $1 Billion annually (all species).
• Shrimp consistently highest volume and second most valuable fishery, behind snow crab.
• Both “offshore” and “inshore” fisheries – Offshore: >35m vessels; primarily supply shell-on
markets in Asia, Russia, and Europe.
– Inshore: 20m vessels; supply fresh product primarily for cooked and peeled markets in Europe and NA.
– Inshore fleet are members of FFAW|Unifor
Northern Shrimp: - Began exclusively with offshore
from 1978-1996 - Now Inshore (fresh landings) and
Offshore (FAS landings) - Quota peaked at 180,000 MT in
2009 and at 129,000 MT in 2015
Gulf Shrimp: - Began in 1965 and continues
today, exclusively to inshore - Quota peaked at 37,000 MT in
2010 and at 31,500 in 2015
Scotian Shelf Shrimp: - Began in 1960s and continues
today mainly as inshore with small FAS effort.
- Quota peaked at 5,500 MT in 2000 and at 4,500 in 2015

Latest Scotian Shelf Science Advice, Nov 2014
• Based on the survey, the total biomass estimate of 39,381 (95% confidence interval 32,435- 46,328) mt remained approximately stable at a high level in 2014, decreasing only 1.5% from 2013.
• Although the stock is expected to continue to gradually decline in 2015, the high fishable and
spawning stock biomass in 2014 suggests that a status quo TAC will not exceed the removal reference in 2015. However, given the small size of the 2009-2012 year classes, reactive TAC reductions will be required if the stock declines towards to the Cautious Zone.
Latest Gulf Scientific Advice
Main stock status indicator by year and limit (LRP) and upper (USR) stock reference points for each fishing area. All four stocks in the Gulf are in the healthy zone!
