Founded in 1968 with a grant from the Government

of India, the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute

promotes positive relations between India and

Canada through scholarly activities, academic and

cultural exchange, and applied research.

The Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute is a

collaborative effort of its 22 member Universities

in Canada, the Museum of Civilization and 32

member Universities/Institutions in India.

An educated citizenry is the cornerstone of peaceful

and prosperous societies. Academic partnerships

and knowledge exchange are the route to developing

positive and mutually beneficial long-term

relationships. The Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute’s

excellence in supporting the next generation of

Indian and Canadian scholars has a positive and

catalyzing effect on all sectors of society.

India has been identified as one of the fastest

growing economies in the world and a priority

trading partner for Canada. It is also the second

largest source of Canadian immigration. More

than ever, the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute

has an important role to play in continuing to

build cultural, academic and economic bridges

between India and Canada, through the creation of

partnerships with academic, government, business

and Indo-Canadian communities.The Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute builds

knowledge in Canada and India by sponsoring

fellowships, academic study, exchanges and

applied research in the social sciences, humanities,

law, business, economic reform, globalization,

information management, science and technology,

biotechnology, agriculture and distance education.

- Michael Brecher, membre fondateur

“Each country benefits from the dissemination of knowledge, personal contact, awareness of challenges, and aspirations of both nations.”

- Michael Brecher, founding member

Originally founded to promote studies in the arts,

literature, culture, social sciences and the humanities,

the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute’s mandate now

incorporates a rich diversity of disciplines.

Our members, the Governments of Canada and

India, and the community at large support

programmes that promote understanding and

collaboration between Canada and India. Our

priority is to build community and corporate support

for our ongoing activities in Canada and India.

canadiennes.
