Ukraine is the 4th largest importer of Canadian fish and seafood (by volume). 80% of fish and seafood available in the market is imported. Canada exported $51.2 million worth of fish and seafood products to Ukraine in 2018. $39.3 million of this total was exported from B.C. Popular imported species include: herring, mackerel, hake, capelin, and salmon.

Benefits of CUFTA for Fish & Seafood Exporters

Caviar (Sturgeon Roe): From 15% Tariff → 0%

Salmon (Smoked or Processed): From 5% Tariff → 0%

Mackerel (Frozen or Processed):From Tariffs of Up to 20% → 0%

Herring (Smoked or Processed):From 5% Tariff → 0%

Tuna (Processed):From 7% Tariff → 0%

Dogfish (Chilled or Frozen):From Tariffs of Up to 10% → 0%

There has been a 104% increase in volume and 112% increase in value of Canada’s fish and seafood exports to Ukraine between 2017 and 2018.

Under the Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement, all tariffs on fish and seafood were eliminated on entry into force, on August 1, 2017. A number of products in the fish and seafood sector faced tariffs before CUFTA’s implementation, including the following: Mackerel (Frozen or Processed): The Most Favoured Nation tariff on this product is up to 20%, but this tariff has been eliminated under CUFTA for Canadian exporters. Caviar (Sturgeon Roe): The Most Favoured Nation tariff on this product 15%, but this tariff has been eliminated under CUFTA for Canadian exporters. Salmon (Smoked or Processed): The Most Favoured Nation tariff on this product is 5%, but this tariff has been eliminated under CUFTA for Canadian exporters. Herring (Smoked or Processed): The Most Favoured Nation tariff on this product is 5%, but this tariff has been eliminated under CUFTA for Canadian exporters. Tuna (Processed): The Most Favoured Nation tariff on this product is 7%, but this tariff has been eliminated under CUFTA for Canadian exporters. Dogfish (Chilled or Frozen): The Most Favoured Nation tariff on this product is up to 10%, but this tariff has been eliminated under CUFTA for Canadian exporters. All information is for indicative purposes only, as the final decision regarding the classification of a good falls with the Ukrainian customs authority.
