Intra-Company Transfers (ICT): This permit is for foreign nationals who come to work for a Canadian branch of their current employer (LMIA or labor market exempt).

·ForeigncompanieswithCanadianaffiliatescanbringexecutives,seniormanagers,and employees with specialized knowledge to work.

· Applicants must have worked on an ongoing basis for at least one year in the last three years for the same or a related employer.

· This Work Permit requires an LMIA.

· Visa Duration: Generally issued in 2 – 3-year increments with the option to extend.

NAFTA Professional Work Permit: This permit is for American and Mexican workers with Canadianjoboffersinoneofthe60occupationstargetedbyNAFTA.

· Applicants do not require an LMIA.

· Visa Duration: Generally issued in increments of up to 3 years with the option to extend.

LMIA-based Work Permit: ThispermitforforeignworkerswithjoboffersinCanada.Itrequires a positive Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), which demonstrates that there isaneedforaforeignworkertofillajobinCanada.EmployersmustsendanapplicationtoEmploymentandSocialDevelopmentCanada(ESDC)toobtainapositiveLMIAbeforetheforeign national worker may apply for work permit.

·Allowsforeignnationalstoworkforaspecificemployerforasetamountoftime.

· Requires proof of education and/or work experience, a positive LMIA, and an employment contract in Canada.

· Work Permit Duration: There is no set maximum amount of time foreign nationals canworkinCanada.Thelengthofstaydependsonthejoboffer,LMIA,andpassportexpiration date. However, LMIAs are typically approved for 1, 2 or 3 years as they are based on a temporary business need.

Open Work Permit: This permit is for spouses of foreign workers in Canada.

· Allows foreign nationals to work for any eligible employer in Canada.

·DoesnotrequireanLMIAoranemploymentcontract.

· Work Permit Duration: Usually tied to the work permit duration of the principal spouse.

Business visitors are foreign workers from certain countries who come to Canada to conduct international business but do not enter the Canadian labor market.

· Applicants do not require a Work Permit, but they must demonstrate that they plan to stay for less than six months and that they will not enter the Canadian labor market.

· Allowed period of stay in Canada: Upto180days.
