A pril is Volunteer appreciation month and what better

way to start Spring than to start by honouring our

BINGO volunteers. As you may know BINGO has

generated consistent funds for the Centre annually,

and although the frequency has dropped from 4 BINGO sessions

per month down to 2 BINGO sessions per month we are thankful

and appreciative to those who have volunteered at our BINGO

sessions for many decades. At our March Dinner Fund Raiser, we

honoured the following long-time BINGO volunteers. Tamiko

Hikida, Mary McCracken, Doreen Morita, Irene Strum, Joyce

Wall, and Geoff McDonald. We thank Board Member Michel

Vasquez for making the presentations.

BINGO has been an important fundraising event monthly for the

CJCC and we need more volunteers or we risk losing BINGO all

together as we currently do not have enough volunteers and

reserve members standing by. If you or you know of someone

who may be able to volunteer with our BINGO sessions, please

contact the Centre via phone 905-383-5755 or email

Centre Repairs and Updates:

We recently invested in a new kitchen door and frame. We

were receiving numerous false alarms due to a poor fitting

kitchen door.

We had an Electrical company come in and repair defective

lighting as well as match lighting to be all the same.

Several Judo sensei are completing the downstairs Office and

we hope to move our main office downstairs and be fully opera-

tional shortly.

Our building is aging and so too are the facilities within. Our

HVAC system is being patched to lengthen its usage. Some Pro-

grams need replacement equipment. We have been fortunate

to receive several Grants and with one of these Grants the

Board made the decision to eliminate our Property Tax debt

which has been lingering for several years. It brings us up to

date after many years in arrears.

VOLUNTEERS COMMITTEE NEEDED: We are organizing a Pro-

gram Town Hall Meeting shortly and we ask that a representa-

tive from each and every Program at the Centre send a repre-

sentative to the proposed meeting. We are constantly running

around looking for volunteers for our annual events (see above

remaining events for this year.) And it is not efficient and fair to

keep asking the same small group of volunteers to do and the

work in setting up and tearing down and then cleaning up. Our

plan is to have 2 volunteers from each Program at the Centre to

help out or make themselves available for each of our Calendar

events. We need everyone’s cooperation and effort to lighten

the load for those who do volunteer.

Obituary:

Sadly, Tai-Chi Program Instructor Frank Marrazzo passed away

recent after a long battle with cancer and other complications.

Frank was also a student of the Judo Academy and he recently

received his Blackbelt at age of 72.

Also, for those unaware, Sensei David Waterhouse and long

time Professor at the University of Toronto specializing in Japa-

nese studies continued on page 2...

April 28, 2018 - January 13, 2019 Beauty in a Broken World explores artistic responses to the uprooting, dispossession and internment of Japanese Canadians during World War Two through craft objects created during internment, and artwork made in its after-math. Artists include: Emma Nishimura, Steven Nunoda, Laura Shintani, Norman Takeuchi, Yvonne Wakabayashi, Mar-jene Matsunaga Turnbull. Research for the exhibition was conducted with support from the Landscapes of Injustice Project and the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre (Toronto).

and one of our special guest speakers also passed away after a

battle with prostate cancer. David held the rank of 4th degree

blackbelt and he wrote several books on Judo and other aspects of

Japan.

Special Recognition: Judo would like to congratulate Carolina Ka-

wasaki and Luke Lovelock in receiving their Blackbelt recently.

sensei Steven Lampman received his 4th Degree blackbelt, and

sensei Gosia Dzierzgowska received her 3rd degree blackbelt.

SPECIAL PROGRAM EVENTS: Judo

The Kawasaki Rendokan Judo Academy at the CJCC will be cele-

brating their 60th Anniversary this year. A special event is being

planned for all former and current members of: The Hamilton Ko-

dokan Judo Club and the Kawasaki Rendokan Judo Academy. Any

former member is invited to attend.

Mindfulness Meditation Sessions

The Hamilton Buddhist Temple is offering Meditation sessions on the first and third Tuesday of each month in the Temple Room.

7:00pm-9:00pm. Please Arrive 15 minutes early and wear comfortable clothing.

Session Leader Ray Nakano will guide the group through walking, standing and seated meditation.

There is no charge for the session, if you wish, the Temple accepts donations to help sustain the sessions.

Internment Camp Tours

SIGN UP for one of TWO INTERNMENT CAMP TOURS sponsored by Nikkei Cultural Society of Lethbridge & Area. At the outbreak of WW2, over 20,000 Canadians of Japanese ancestry living on the west coast were labelled “enemy aliens, had the WAR MEASURES ACT imposed on them and were forcibly removed from their homes and sent to hastily built internment camps in interior BC. Listen and learn about their stories from an internee who will be guiding the tour Cost: $600/person ...includes lodging, transportation, all fees, two meals and more....

The Tour One is Thursday June 21 to Sunday, June 24, 2018; the Tour Two is Friday, August 31 to Monday, September 3, 2018. First come first served until full. Tours leave and return from Lethbridge. The tour covers Castlegar (Doukhobor Village and Museum), Slocan Valley (Lemon Creek, Popoff, Bay Farm and Slocan City), New Denver (Nikkei Internment Memorial Centre), Sandon, and Kaslo (Langham Centre). This is a guided tour so there will be plenty of story-telling by an internee.....there are only a few internees still living who can tell stories regarding the life and times of the internment era.

A 60+ seniors group that meets, socializes and play Bingo. A spring Fallsview trip is in the planning stages. New members welcomed. Annual membership is $15 for 2018. Monday, April 9th, we will meet at the Mandarin on Upper James for lunch at noon and return to the Cul-tural centre for our meeting for 1:30 pm. Cost of $15 for members. 30th Anniversary of the

Japanese Canadian Redress

On September 22, 1988 The Japanese Canadian Redress Agree-

ment was signed. In the House of Commons, Prime Minister Bri-

an Mulroney acknowledged the government's wrongful actions;

pledged to ensure that the events would never recur and recog-

nized the loyalty of the Japanese Canadians to Canada.

As a symbolic redress for those injustices the government

offered individual and community compensation to the Japanese

Canadians. Funds from the Japanese Canadian Redress founda-

tion were used in Hamilton to establish the cultural centre -

CJCC.

In acknowledgement of this historic agreement a gala is planned

in conjunction with Toronto NAJC. The date will be November 8,

2018 at the Bell TIFF Lightbox. Please join us for this historic

occasion to commemorate the settlement acknowledging

the injustices of the past, clearing the criminal records of those

charged under the War Measures Act, restoration of Canadian

Citizenship to those exiled and the creation of the Canadian Race

Relations Foundation. We have confirmed Art Miki, Maryka

Omatsu, musical entertainment and other key individuals who

were instrumental in the struggle for redress. Tickets will be

$100 per person.

URGENT: BINGO

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED NOW! We have an urgent request for members of the CJCC.

We are very low in our pool of volunteers to run our Bingo ses-

sions.

The funds raised by Bingo are approximately 20% of our annual

operating expenses. We are in jeopardy of loosing these ses-

sions (and the income associated with the session) if we cannot

provide enough volunteers to run the event.

We have only 2 sessions a month: one is a Monday from

4:30pm—10:30pm ;the other date is a Friday from 11:00am to

3:30 pm.

We have had a strong core of Volunteers that have run the

Bingo for the last number of years but their numbers are declin-

ing. If you or any friends and family have the time to spare (only

twice a month), please contact the Centre via phone 905-383-

5755 or email [email protected] and let us know you can help.

You can be trained ‘on the job’. The more volunteers we have

in our pool means less work for everyone.

We cannot stress enough that we are desperate for Volunteers.

We are at risk of losing the Bingo sessions and the Income that

comes with it. That, in turn, threatens the Centre’s future, due

to our poor financial situation.

Hamilton based Ehara family for the successful screening of Sweet Dreams for Chiyo http://www.cbc.ca/cbcdocspov/episodes/sweet-dreams-for-chiyo Bryce Kanbara winner of the Art Miki National Leadership Award for 2017 which was presented at the national NAJC AGM held in the Nishga’a Girl Salon at the Canadian Museum of History in Ottawa. Mark Sakamoto for winning the CBC “Canada Reads” award for his book “Forgiveness” based on the Japanese Canadian Internment in World War 2 Toronto media artist Midi Onodera who is the win-ner of a Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts.

At the Sukiyaki dinner we recognized our hardworking Bingo volunteers. Board member Michel Vasquez presented certifi-cates to Joyce Wall, Doreen Morita, Irene Strum, Mary McCracken and Mike McDonald accepting for his son Geoff. Tamiko Hikeda was not able to attend. We can’t thank you enough for all of your hard work and dedication to the Centre.

Our Fundraising Luncheon on October 15 was well attended and a bit of a

surprise. Originally the Aoki brothers known as “Versa Cello” were to play,

but one of the brothers fell ill. They did not disappoint however; they called

in friends and played an incredible jazz set with Drums (Sam D’eon), Key-

boards (Ben Cinq-Mars) and Theodor Aoki on Cello! Thanks to all who

attended, the organizers and their band the “Theory Dogs”!
