My Son bought a car offa internet auction and asked meto hook up a trailer and headdown and pick it up for him.

I have to tell you that bythe time we added in fuel, hotels,meals and other such things wewere at $2,000 not including ourtime.

I would have been so bet-ter off getting Marc to toss it on hisbed and drop it at Pembina orGrand Forks for me.

Another friend bought afifth wheel down south, Great Deal,all around. Went down to pick it upin a pick-me-up truck and found ithad sat in the same spot for 7years. Bearings had to be done,new tires, all needing repair on thespot being down time with hotels,meals and what not. Again, it couldhave been loading on a skateboard and dropped closer to homeor delivered, door to door.

Don’t forget if you needsomething lifted on or off and youare around or near Alberta, callJamie at Integra.

Also when dealing withthese fine writers be sure to men-tion you read thier articles in CTM.

It is winter again! We hada bit of a break with snow andice, but it is back!

But what I will do is askyou when you are at the truck stopsand picks and drops, chat it up withthe other drivers of your experi-ence, especially the rock pile.

They deserve not to findout the hard way.

Not to blow smoke upyour whatsit, but most of myreaders are silverbacks whoenjoy the pictures and big print.

You know the spots be-tween speedy creek and the hatthat trucks blow over. You haveseen in the rock pile where there isalways a big truck in trouble.

On 5, I always look for onespot where every trip I see a bigtruck in the rhubarb or one has justbeen pulled out.

If we share these spotswith stories to the rookies andbilly big riggers we will have lessline ups waiting for Jamie to pullthem out.

Trust me so many don’t re-alize not to use the cruise control inicy conditions.

This month was a crazymonth in the Edmonton area we hadthe freezing rain with snow on topwhat a crazy time.

But lack of common senseprevailed as usual sometimes we justhave to say stop let’s find a place to getoff the road .

I seen a lot of stupidly, im-patience and ignorance. A word tothe wise give the snow plow opera-tors , the tow truck operators andlaw enforcement some room it’s notall about you.

But the worst act of stu-pidly I seen was a jackknifed truckin the ditch on hi way 16 east be-tween Sherwood park and veg-erville. the truck was in the ditchthere was blowing snow , extremelyslippery I was responding to an-other call when I came upon this .

I could not believe it atruck in the ditch with a truck andtrailer parked behind him and onetruck parked in front of him, all therelights off engines shut off no reflec-tors out no flairs out waiting for arescue I almost took them out my-self .

I was running tire chains thatnight and that was the only reason Iwas able to avoid another serous col-lision . I went up to the truck in the rearand banged on the sleeper, well I hada few choice words for them .Driverstake some responsibility to protect therest of the motoring public you are re-quired by law to do this . also slowdown and give me and the snow plowsa chance to clean up and especiallythe police and fire rescue.

Just because you chooseto go out on a stormy night and riskthings doesn’t mean the rest of usdo it is our job to be out there andour responsibility give us a breakslow down move over or get off theroad.

Anytime a commercialmotor vehicle, that is a vehicle witha GVWR or gross weight of 10,001pounds or more (see §390.5for com-plete definition), is stopped on thehighway for any cause other thannecessary traffic stops, specificsafety regulations and proceduresimmediately become the responsi-bility of the driver. Section 392.22lists these responsibilities, which gobeyond simply activating the emer-gency signal flashers.

Warning devices consistingof three bidirectional emergency re-flective triangles must be placed assoon as possible, or within 10 min-utes of the CMV coming to a stopalong the roadside, in the followingmanner:

•One on the traffic side ap-proximately 10 feet from the stoppedCMV and in the direction of ap-proaching traffic;

•One at approximately 100feet from the stopped CMV in thecenter of the traffic lane or shoulderoccupied by the CMV and in the di-rection of approaching traffic;

•One at approximately 100feet from the stopped CMV in thecenter of the traffic lane or shoulderoccupied by the CMV and in the di-rection away from approaching traf-fic.

Section 393.95 details therequired emergency equipment thatmust be carried on all trucks, trucktractors, and busses.

If the CMV is stopped within500 feet of a curve, or at the crest of ahill, or any other obstruction in view, thedriver must place the warning devicesin the direction of the obstruction andat a distance of 100 to 500 feet fromthe stopped commercial motor vehicleto warn others who may be approach-ing the stopped CMV.

Divided or one-way roads re-quire the driver to place one warningdevice at a distance of 100 feet in thedirection of approaching traffic in thecenter lane or shoulder occupied bythe CMV, and another warning deviceat the traffic side of the CMV within 10feet of the rear of the vehicle.

Under no circumstancescan a driver, or anyone for that mat-ter, attach or carry fuses or anyother flame-producing emergencysignal on a CMV transporting Divi-sion 1.1, 1.2, or 1.3 explosives; orClass 3 or Division 2.1, whetherloaded or empty; or any CMV usingcompressed gas as a motor fuel,use any flame producing emer-gency signal or attach to any part ofthe CMV.

Anytime a CMV is stoppedalong the roadside for any causeother than traffic stops, law enforce-ment officials are soon to arrive toinvestigate the matter. If the driverhas not taken action as described in§392.22, one can safely count on vi-olations being added to an alreadyunusual event.

hundreds of thousands of pills sentby mail but seized by Canada BorderAgency Officials were on display inVancouver last week.

The presentation followedthe end of Operation Pangea V, aninternational investigation co-ordi-nated by Interpol that spanned 100countries. RCMP Sgt. DuncanPound said Canadian officials in-spected almost 4,000 packages,seizing 2,000 of those and confis-cated nearly 140,000 fake pills worthabout $1 million.

"These products are dan-gerous," said Heather Ardiel, chiefof operations for the border agencyat the Vancouver International MailCentre. "Taking prescription med-ications without proper medical ad-vice may pose serious health risksand in some cases even be fatal."…

Police have arrested a 58-year-old B.C. man and seized 6,000counterfeit erectile dysfunction pillsand recommended charges to Crowncounsel. There are two more casesbeing investigated with over 4,000websites, Asia being the primarysource of the medications…counter-feit drugs, over 8,000 dosages. In-vestigations are ongoing daily.

There is a case you mayhave heard of lately involving a truckdriver, “Kuldeep Singh Dharni, ac-cused of smuggling 100 kilograms ofcocaine with an estimated streetvalue of $10 million, he ended upbeing acquitted recently of allcharges.

The Superior Court Justice,Mr. Thomas Carey, even expressedsympathy that the 39-year-oldBrampton trucker had to undergosuch legal troubles since he was ar-rested three years ago when cus-toms officers made thesecond-largest ever cocaine bust atthe Ambassador Bridge. “I wish youthe best of luck,” Carey told Dharniafter delivering his ruling. “And I’msorry this ordeal was visited uponyou.”

Customs officers found 100bricks of cocaine in Dharni’s truck,hidden among aluminum coils pickedup in Indiana, as he attempted tocross the Ambassador Bridge intoCanada around 8:30 p.m. on August10, 2009.

Dharni maintained that hehad no idea cocaine was hidden in histruck, though federal prosecutorRichard Pollock argued that the ac-cused knew full well.

Carey found Dharni’s evi-dence truthful and suggested that theowner of the truck, not Dharni whodrove it, orchestrated the crime whichcarries a maximum penalty of life inprison.

The owner of the truck wasdishonest on the stand and had di-rected Dharni to a busy truck stop towait while paperwork was allegedlyprocessed, he then could have hadcocaine planted in bags on the un-sealed truck.

Carey also noted that twosets of footprints on the aluminiumcoils did not match Dharni’s. “I do be-lieve your evidence,” Carey toldDharni. “It was clear and uncontra-dicted by any other evidence. It didnot sound practised or rehearsed andit made sense. “The cross examina-tion, in my view, enhanced your cred-ibility. There is no criminal recordalleged and I accept you, Mr. Dharni,as a person of good character.”

Dharni was declared free togo. Outside the court house Dharni,who listened to the two-week trialwith the help of Punjabi interpreters,expressed relief with the decision tothe thanks of his lawyer Mr. PatrickDucharme.

Ducharme said he will seeka quick return of his client’s pass-port from the police, so that Dharnican return to his wife and 2 1/2-year-old son in Brampton and soon re-sume his trucking career. Dharnihad been living under strict bail con-ditions for more than three years.

Things aren’t always as they seem.

Coming across I-72westbound yesterday morning, Isaw emergency vehicles on theeastbound side ahead. When Igot up next to them, there in themiddle of the lanes was a sheet-covered body. It was not a goodway to start the day to see thisin the dawn’s early light.

PTSD used to be calledcombat fatigue and came to be un-derstood most in soldiers returning

home during WWII and thenKorea. It is the residual from trau-matic incidents or occurrences thatone suffers such as battle, abuse,abject fear or accidents where onefeels out of control.

The easiest explainedexample of PTSD symptoms issomeone being gun shy; onejumps or over reacts adverselyto a loud noise after say, beingshot at another time. Physicalsymptoms are increased heart-beat, anxiety, nausea, sweats,flashbacks to what caused thePTSD in the first place, night-mares, high stress levels anddepression.

PTSD may be caused byaccumulative incidences; this iswhat affects truck drivers themost. Added to the constantstress caused by traffic and tightschedules, seeing horrendousaccidents, assisting as first onthe scene to accidents, or seeingthe sheet-covered bodies cancause accumulative PTSD.

Because of the isolationof the job, the trucker may not beable to talk about whatever it wasthey witnessed to work thru theemotions. If truckers have beenin a serious accident them-selves, PTSD may kick in if theysee a similar accident.

People can show somestrange behaviors that are causedby PTSD. My late brother would tellme of seeing a horrendous wreckwith dead bodies and then laugh.He had PTSD for years after serv-ing three tours in Viet Nam andbeing a trucker added to it. Laugh-ing after relating something terriblehe had seen was his way of coping,it was a release for him, but if youdid not know him, you would thinkhim callous or hard hearted…hewas not. If he heard a helicoptertoo closely or a jet would go overtoo low, he would hit the dirt or gointo defensive mode, classic exam-ples of PTSD.

Stress Disorder (PTSD)I was in a major wreck in

2000 where I was pinned in thesleeper for a couple of hours inthe dark. I still to this day do notknow exactly what my positionwas when I pulled myself up, Icould look down at my ex pinnedbehind the steering wheel.When I am tired or stressed, if Ithink about that, my mind goesinto a loop reliving that wreck…and I get scared all over again.

Some PTSD is normalafter an incident where you arescared or feel out of control andnormal PTSD will ease with a littletime. However, PTSD that staysaround or shows up years after theevent can be hard to deal with; butit can be dealt with.

Treating PTSD takes deal-ing with the emotions that you didnot feel at the time, this might takeseeing a professional. Talk therapyis the most common form of treat-ment for PTSD, using anger man-agement, depression strategiesand coping techniques. For truck-ers, the need to talk about whatthey see during the day that affectsthem adversely is very important,for instance, my writing about see-ing the sheet covered body is away for me to deal with seeing it soit does not build up in my mind andturn into PTSD.

PTSD is a very treatablemental illness andnothing to beashamed of. If youthink that youmight be sufferingfrom it by havingcontinued night-mares, anxiety, de-

pression or stress when you seeor remember bad things, then byall means do not hesitate to seesomeone to get some help withthis disorder. As with any mentalillness, there is no shame in hav-ing it, only shame, in this dayand age, if you do not get helpwith it.

Danica Patrick was named NASCAR's Nationwide Se-ries most popular driver for the first time after finishing10th in points during her inaugural full-time season onthe circuit.

Nelson Piquet Jr. also was named most popular driver of the Camp-ing World Truck Series for the first time in nearly 120,000 combinedvotes cast on NASCAR.com for the lower-tier national series.

The awards were announced during the series' annual postseasonawards ceremonies at the Loews Hotel in Miami Beach, Fla.

Patrick earned four top 10s in 33 starts for JR Motorsports in whatmight be her lone full-time Nationwide campaign. She is moving intothe Sprint Cup Series next season with Stewart-Haas Racing.

The Sprint Cup most popular driver award was announced Nov. 29in Las Vegas. Dale Earnhardt Jr. has won the award nine consecu-tive times.
