History of canal
Lahore Canal begins at the Bambawali-Ravi-Bedian (BRB) Canal thatruns through the east of the city of Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan.
The 37 miles (60 km) long waterway built by the Mughals andupgraded by the British in 1861) is an important part of the city's
cultural heritage.
T he canal, aside from its importance in irrigation purposes.
On local and national festivals, the canal is illuminated with lightsand decor.

canals AROUND T he WOR LDT he first major canal in the United States was the Erie Canal.Completed in 1824, the 364-mile (586-kilometer) canal provided a
water route that brought grain from the Great Lakes region to NewYork and the markets of the East.
With the coming of the railroads in the 1830s, the United Statesquickly abandoned its canals, believing that rail was then the bestmethod for shipping and transportation.
Today, however, inland canals play a major transportation role in theUnited States and the rest of the world, since they are perfectly
suited for carrying low-value, high-bulk cargoes over long distances.

Nigeria waterway
Nigeria has the second longest length of waterways in Africa. It has 8,600 kilometers of inland waterways and an extensivecoastland of about 852 kilometers.
Nigeria s waterways centre on its longest rivers, Rivers Niger andBenue, which dissect the country into east, west, and northsections..Most of the activity on the country s waterways, especially by largerpowered boats and for commerce, is in the Niger Delta and all alongthe coast from Lagos Lagoon to Cross River.
However water transport scores a distant second to road transport, with an average share of about 1.6 per cent of Nigeria s grossdomestic product.

Purpose of this project: ± We want to lessen the traffic on canal road ±
We will provide people with an alternative modeof transporti.e. boats along the canal from BRP to thokar
± We can provide this alternative without damaging
much of the ecosystem.

ProposalsIf we broaden the canal we have the following demerits and meritsM erits Demerits
It wont damage the ecosystembecause very few trees will beuprooted ,which can be replanted by
the RP technology .T he trees which are planted nearbycanal are not beneficial for the canalas they absorb the water whichcreates hindrance in maintaining thewater level.
By broadening the canal we can haveboats moving two ways which willmake our water traffic efficient
