Individual Reward A startling picture of the early church emerges in the first two chapters of the revelation of Jesus Christ to the seven churches of Asia. The church is departing from Christ. Jesus calls on five of these seven congregations to repent (Rev. 2:5,16,22; 3:3,19). Before the dust settles on the graves of the apostles of Jesus Christ, the congregations of the Lord’s people are moving away from Him. Even though a congregation may be moving in the wrong direction, individuals within those churches can remain loyal to Christ and receive an individual reward. Each one of us has a personal responsibility to remain faithful to Jesus (2 Cor. 5:10). No one is powerless against the departure from the truth by the masses. Each believer can stand alone if necessary. Your reward is not tied to the destiny of the group. The eternal reward is an individual prize resulting from personal choices. His rewards are promised to each individual who remains faithful to Him: “He [singular, i.e., to the person] who overcomes shall thus be clothed in white garments; and I will not erase his [singular, i.e., to the person] name from the book of life, and I will confess his [singular, i.e., to the person] name before My Father, and before His angels” (Rev. 3:5). Helping us remain faithful is God’s desire for the called out, but when the assembly fails to be faithful, it falls on the indi-vidual to make the decision to persist in loyalty to Jesus.
