The program always concludes with a tea ceremony and time to chat between participants. “Being in nature is a stimulator of the immune response of the body. This is such a great benefit to those with a chronic disease. The stress response is also lessened which allows the body to focus on regaining health and not managing stress,” Thomson said. Participants Kathleen Byerley and Andrijana Sekara have felt what they describe as “oneness with nature” during the walks. Participating in two of the forest therapy walks, Byerley said that connecting with nature took precedence over the physicality of the walk. “It’s quiet and you are invited to use your senses and really focus. The oneness in spirit and the oneness with other people comes out,” Byerley said. After her first walk at Metea County Park, Sekara was so overcome by the experience, she went home to write about the trails, flower fields and the tiniest hummingbird she had ever seen. “When I came out (of the walk), I was calmer because of the woods, but I felt flooded with love,” Sekara said. “I came in with love, and left with more love, like it was doubled or magnified.” It’s quiet and you are invited to use your senses and really focus... In 2003, Cancer Services’ CEODianne May asked Linda Bewley tohelp with the front desk at CancerServices. It was supposed to be atemporary assignment of a fewweeks.

Linda did not take into accounthow her passion would grow forthe work. Somehow, in betweenlife’s strange turns, her temporarystint extended into more than adecade of outstanding dedication.

In September, we will say farewellto Linda Bewley. She is retiring asOutreach Coordinator after 15 yearsof service to Cancer Services.

As Linda likes to put it, shecould strike up a conversationwith a tree if she needed to.

Her ability to connect to so manypeople across the 11 counties inNortheast Indiana has helped spreadawareness about Cancer Services.

But it isn’t just outreach —Linda brought heart to her work. She was the one ensuring memorialbricks were placed in the right spot. She was the one to make sure arose from Cancer Services wasdelivered to funeral services. In allof her actions, Linda set an examplefor how to keep the focus on thepeople we serve.

President and CEO Dianne Maysaid, “Linda has a passion formaking sure that people withcancer know there is a communityresource ready to help. She’s soughtevery opportunity to spread the wordand connect people who need helpand people who want to help. Wecan’t thank her enough for hercommitment to the mission.”

Happy retirement, Linda! Youhave served your community welland you will be missed.

A Survivor’s Story CBS “Survivor” alum Chad Crittenden did not reveal

his prosthetic leg to his fellow competitors in their first48 hours on the show.

As the first amputee to compete on “Survivor:Vanuatu” in 2004, it was important to break downstereotypes. Although, he did not win the million-dollarprize, Chad knew he was a survivor. A cancer survivor.

Chad will be the featured speaker for the 14thannual Tribute Dinner, 6 p.m. September 5, 2018. Hewill share his inspirational story about surviving cancer,“Survivor,” and his life of adventure after the show.

Before “Survivor,” Chad was living an activelifestyle, working as a bilingual educator in California, where he was born and raised. In 2002, Chaddiscovered a cancerous tumor on the bottom of hisfoot. He was diagnosed with synovial sarcoma, a rareform of cancer. The best treatment happened to be

the most drastic: the amputation of his leg. After his surgery, Chad began rehabilitationusing a prosthetic.

Just one year after his surgery, Chad auditioned for “Survivor.” He endured 27 days onthe show before he was voted off by a powerful alliance. He has moved forward toparticipate in marathons, triathlons and snowboarding. He has climbed Mt. Whitney andMt. Kilimanjaro, using his platform to benefit the Challenged Athletes Foundation.

Chad, now a husband and father of two, has been a cancer survivor of more than 10 years.
