• Awareness and Prevention • Education Material and Seminars • Patient AdvocacyFORCE is a national non-profit dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. Our mission includes support, education, advocacy, awareness, and research specific to hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. FORCE was founded on the principle that no one should have to face hereditary breast and ovarian cancer alone. Being part of a family with a history of breast and/or ovarian cancers can be frightening. Learning that one carries a genetic mutation, putting them at much higher risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer or struggling through diagnosis and treatment, can be devastating. FORCE New Mexico exists to provide continuous and gentle support to the high-risk community without judgment. The local FORCE outreach group’s primary focus is peer support. Monthly meetings are held the third Sunday of each month at Lovelace Women’s Hospital from 2-4 PM in Auditorium B. Our programs serve anyone with a BRCA 1 or 2 mutation or a family history of breast or ovarian cancer.

Ronald McDonald House Charities of New Mexico provides comfort, care and a home away from home for families with children in medical treatment. Opened in 1982, Ronald McDonald House Charities of New Mexico (RMHC-NM) has had an unchanged, unduplicated mission to provide temporary lodging, comfort and care to families with ill or injured children. The cornerstone program of RMHC-NM is Ronald McDonald House Lodging Program that serves families of any seriously ill or injured infant or child residing more than 50 miles away who need to receive inpatient or outpatient care from any Albuquerque medical provider for any diagnosis. RMHC-NM also provides two Ronald McDonald Family Rooms to provide support inside the hospital. These rooms offer a special place of respite, relaxation and privacy within the walls of the UNM Children’s Hospital and Presbyterian Hospital where parents are just steps away from their child’s bedside.

New Mexico Cancer Council Initiatives

2015The New Mexico Cancer Council is a voluntary collaborative effort of diverse

public and private partners working together to foster coordination and

collaboration among cancer related organizations to reduce the burden of

cancer in New Mexico. To date, the partnership has grown to include over 40

local, regional and national organizations that are actively supporting the vision

and mission of the Council. The Council produces the New Mexico Cancer

Plan, which serves as a roadmap for cancer control and prevention in our state.

The Cancer Plan describes what cancer looks like in New Mexico, including

data on the most prevalent cancers, health inequities, and cancer care issues

including prevention, detection, treatment and palliative care. It also contains

goals and objectives for reducing the burden of cancer and addressing health

inequities based on national objectives and issues unique to our state.

This year, the New Mexico Cancer Council is focusing its efforts on several

priority areas, including increasing access to survivorship information, patient

navigation services, and smoke-free housing; increasing colorectal cancer

screening rates; and beginning to plan for development of the next iteration

of the New Mexico Cancer Plan. More information about initiatives of the New

Mexico Cancer Council can be found at www.nmcancercouncil.org.

Need Help Accessing Cancer-Related Medical Services?

As a result of the Affordable Care Act most New Mexicans can now access

preventative cancer services (e.g., colorectal cancer screening, Pap smears, and

mammograms) at no charge – not even a co-pay. If you need help getting the

coverage you need for cancer prevention or treatment services, the following

may be able to help:
