THE LIGHTHOUSENewsletter for February 2016

Many are asking, "Who can show us any good?" Let the light of your face

shine upon us, O LORD. Psalm 4:6

Message from Our Pastor

Dear Friends in Christ,

I am going to admit we are about to go into my favorite seasons in the church year, Lent and Easter. Some might wonder why Lent? It can seem like a dark contemplative time. It’s a time when we examine and look deeper into our lives as we journey with Christ to the cross. It’s a time when people traditionally give something up that they love, which in many cases is some type of food or drink. This is fine and I am not going to stop you, as a matter of fact, if you can do it, I congratulate you! Because for me I usually fall very short and whatever I give up I pick it back up only a few weeks into Lent, and if I was successful I was back into full swing eating or drinking it on Easter when we celebrated the resurrection of our Lord and Savior. But after a conversation with my colleague in ministry Pastor Susie, we both agreed maybe instead of giving something up, we should start a practice of something that would strengthen our faith. This is a conversation I have had with many pastors in my life and this time it really stuck with me!

For example, what if we took the time to strengthen our prayer lives during Lent, or made the commitment to read

through the entire bible in one year? Studies have shown it takes a good two to three weeks to get into the habit of doing something, to get your body and mind into the routine of doing it, and Lent is a perfect opportunity to do that. So during lent I encourage you to find something that helps you strengthen your faith, if you would like some suggestions I would love to help you find something that suits you.

I also want to encourage you to come to the mid-week Lenten services which we share with our good Methodist neighbors. This year we will be doing the Holden Evening Prayer, which is a beautiful collection of songs in prayer focused on centering us in prayer. There will be a short Homily focusing on a Lenten topic during the service so please come. The night will begin at 6:00 pm with fellowship of good conversation cookies and coffee and the service which runs roughly 30 to 40 minutes begins at 6:20. If driving at night isn’t something you care to do I encourage you to carpool with a friend.

Finally I want to add a big thank-you to all who made the wonderful soups, homemade bread, and desserts, helped serve, gave donations, and stopped by for a bowl or two at our first soup luncheon this year! It was a big success and we are looking forward to the next one on the 9th of February!! So please stop in between 11:30-1:00 for good food and fellowship, and please bring a friend!!

I look forward to walking with you during this Lenten season as I have every season so far!

Yours in Christ, Pastor David

Joint Council Meeting January 20, 2015

Present: Lorraine Graham, Tom Gustafson, Fred Feleppa, Jerry Fenlon, John & Pega Kennedy, Lana Lennington, Traci Movalson, Jim & Jerri Rose, Paul Shepard and Pastor Tielbar.

The Joint Council was convened at 6:50 pm, following a wonderful pot luck dinner. Pastor David began with devotions.

Lana Lennington stated that Zion had planned to ask Trinity to pay a larger percentage toward our joint cost, but because of a previous conversation it was determined that Trinity was having just as many money problems as Zion. Lana suggested a cap on the salaries of the minister and the secretary as a way of lowering our projected costs. Pega asked if that was okay with the minister and the secretary. The secretary said it was fine and the minister stated that he hadn’t expected to get a raise until after he had been here for a year, anyway. The subject of raises were tabled for a later meeting.

Fred Feleppa asked if there was a policy in place for people doing their estate planning. He asked if we might put the option out there for people to leave money to the church. Pastor said he thought there was something and would look into it.

Lana stated that she thought our current situation was temporary and we would need to think of other ways to bring

in money besides the collection plate. An example she used was the soup luncheons.

Pastor stated he thought we were progressing well. The plans for WELCA to start up again and the Youth Mission Trip in June showed that progress. She stated that we should advertise that the youth group was collecting pop cans and bottles as a way to raise money for there Youth Mission Trip. We should put it in the bulletins and the newsletters.

The Joint Meeting was concluded at 7:15 pm and Trinity followed with their Council Meeting.

Respectfully submitted,Lorraine Graham – Church Secretary
