People’s College of Law Elections

CAROL DEUPREE Fri, Oct 1, 2021 at 2:35 PMTo:

In 1995 I graduated from People’s College of Law. Although I never took the Bar, my experiences at the school werepositive and had a lasting impact on my life. I served on the Board for a number of years after I received my J.D. degree, but I resigned in protest when I felt that our then dean, Tomas Olmos, who had done so much for the school and for thecommunity as well, was being disrespected by the school and was being shown a lack of appreciation. I still feel that ourschool, while still making some phenomenal progressive changes on the Southern California landscape, has a history ofneglecting to show respite or honor those who have given of their time and financial resources to benefit their school. A recent example of this is the renaming of the library. I want to take nothing away from the contributions of Hank diSuvero. I would put up no objection to renaming the school “The Hank di Suvero School of Law.” However approximatelytwenty-five years ago that same library was named “The Sam Rosenwein Library”. To strip arbitrarily from the library thechosen name of one of our preeminent professors who for many years taught Constitutional Law. This man wasworldwide considered an expert on First Amendment issues. He had previously argued before an International WarCrimes Tribunal in Stockholm that the U.S. military buildup in Vietnam was in violation of the 1954 Geneva accord. Thereare many rooms that could pay tribute to Hank di Suvero. Two other neglect heroes of PCL are Ralph Fertig and his son, David Fertig. Both of these people were always thereto bail out the school when we were in trouble. They gave the school thousands of dollars without any expectation ofrepayment. I have used these exams as explanations for my disengagement from the school. I felt disillusioned anddisappointed. Since I still have gratitude to the school and a love for the ideals for which it stands, I am at a pot in my lifewhere I can see that I can be of more service to the school by being a part of it and fighting for the things which I feel areimportant. Whether I am elected to the Board or not, as soon as I recover from a broken femur and am able to driveagain, I plan to actively serve the school again.

Carol DeuPree

Hello, PCL Community! My name is Christina Gonzalez. It’s been an honor to serve on the board as PCL’s Chair/President since the beginning of 2021. During this short time, I have guided PCL through several major transitions, including hiring a new Administrator/Registrar, securing a new Interim Dean, and raising over $50,000 at our fundraiser in April 2021. If re-elected to serve on the board, I would continue the work of moving PCL forward by strengthening PCL’s infrastructure and reinforcing our community networks in service of the school and its students.

As a PCL graduate (class of 2012), a practicing lawyer, and an advocate working to promote access to justice, I have the legal knowledge and foundational skills necessary to continue giving back to the PCL community and ensuring PCL and its students thrive.

I currently work as a staff attorney in the Homelessness Prevention Law Project at Public Counsel—the country’s largest pro bono law firm—preventing Angelenos from becoming unhoused, as well as defending tenants in eviction actions. Prior to this, I worked at Eviction Defense Network, also specializing in housing rights and eviction defense. In this role, I represented low-income tenants at all stages of unlawful detainer actions, including jury trials, and helped tenants stay in their homes and stand up to slumlords.

PCL’s mission to “bring legal resources to under-represented communities and to train legal advocates dedicated to securing progressive social change and justice in society” guides my work as an attorney and as an activist. Please vote for me to continue my service on the PCL Board. Thank you!

Clemente Franco Board Nomination Statement I taught real property for several years over the past decade. Not only did I enjoy the experience, but I think I walked away a better person each time. I believe in PCL and its mission and in the need for a law school like PCL, one that seeks to graduate not merely future lawyers, but future lawyers that serve the people. As such, I would like to ensure that it continues to graduate progressive lawyers, ones that have the interest of the community, the poor, the workers, the downtrodden in mind. More importantly, I believe PCL has the potential to have a greater impact in the community, both in the legal community and in the community in which it resides. I am not sure what, if anything, I can contribute, but I am willing to try to work to leave the institution better than I find it. I bring some experience that may allow me to contribute to the board and PCL. I am a native Angeleno, born and raised in South Central Los Angeles to immigrant parents who look very much like the people that live and work in the blocks around PCL, and like the people many PCL students wish to serve. I have, as I mentioned, taught at PCL over the years, which has given me an appreciation, I believe, for the strengths and weaknesses of PCL, and also for its potential. I have a financial background, having worked as an auditor in a previous life and having obtained an MBA, that may be of use in charting PCL’s future and ensuring its sustainability. I am an attorney who represents mostly poor, immigrant tenants. Finally, and most importantly, I care what happens to PCL and believe that it needs to continue to exist.

David Bouffard candidate statement

David Bouffard Sun, Oct 3, 2021 at 12:24 PMTo: "[email protected]"

My name is David Bouffard and I graduated from PCL in 2017. I have been on the board since 2018. Back in 2017,there was a very real chance that our class would be the “last” PCL graduates. It’s due to the tireless and selfless effortof people like Ira Spiro and Hector Pena and others that the school endures. We have a new president, ChristinaGonzalez, who has been excellent. I support the impressive work of these fine people and want to keep the school goingin the right direction. Let’s keep that forward momentum by maintaining a cohesive board. I would appreciate your votein this election.

ABOUT DIANA:

PCL Community,

My name is Héctor C. Peña Ramírez and I’m the current Treasurer of the PCL Board of Directors. I’m also on the Admission Committee, Building Committee, Faculty and Curriculum Committee and the Development Committee.

As a member of the Development Committee, I was part of the group that helped organize the 46th Anniversary Celebration Event that helped secure over $53,000 for PCL. I hope to continue organizing for PCL’s 47th Anniversary next year. As the Treasurer I helped secure over $20,000 of both PPP funds and California Relief Grant funds at the onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

This year, if elected, I hope to focus on 1) building PCL’s capacity to improve PCL’s California State Bar and First Year Law Student passage rate and 2) completing PCL’s Strategic Plan.

Let’s continue to work together to help PCL fulfill its mission of creating People’s Lawyers.

Sincerely,

Héctor Candelario Peña Ramírez

Peoples College of Law Board of Directors

Comrades,

Thank you for your nomination and consideration for your vote. I am one of two 2020 graduates

of People's College of Law. Applying what I was taught at PCL, I passed the bar exam on the

first attempt in October of 2020. I was sworn in to th eCalifornia Bar on September 24, 2021. I

share your pride in being a student here. I expect to remain a member of the PCL community far

into the future.

I have previously served in student government positions, been an officer and board member of

various homeowners associations for many years, and I am currently appointed to an advisory

board for a professional and continuing education program at the University of California Santa

Barbara. I have enjoyed some participation in the PCL Admissions and Recruitment committee.

While a student, I put many other obligations aside to focus on my studies at PCL. I look forward

to resuming normal life outside of school; however, I am willing to serve as a member of the

PCL Community Board to do my part to maintain our community.

If elected, I would like to support continued focus and admissions and recruitment, preparation

for a celebration of PCL’s 50th anniversary in 2024, and the continuation of the mission of our

non-competitive, cooperative, student and community-run, progressive law school for another

50 years.

Si se puede! Power to the People!

In solidarity,

Joshua Gillins, Esq.

Peoples College of Law - Class of 2020

Dear PCL community I am asking for your vote to become a Peoples College of Law Board Member. My name is Juan Flores-Zamora, and I am happy to be a first-year PCL student. I am an educator by profession and have been teaching since 2008. I love teaching and helping others learn. I was radicalized by racist work conditions where Human Resources and complacent unions maintain and uphold white supremacist values and structures on the job. I now look to law school as a way of becoming a better anti-racist educator so that I can have the means to defend myself and others in the ongoing struggle of dismantling systemic racism and inequality. I look to build community through advancing relationships built around anti-racist, anti-sexist, anti-homophobic ideology through an understanding of the inherent and unequal capitalist relationships that maintains, perpetuates, and thrives on the divisions of society. I want to do my best in helping my classmates learn law and fulfill the mission of the college in creating people’s lawyers. I strive to help the college by providing my expertise as an educator in creating and maintaining support structures and systems inside and outside the classroom that will increase student learning and enable equitable student success. Please vote for me and our slate, Diana Cruz, Keeiarra Dashiell, Ana Minauri, Kerin Morataya and Ismael Venegas. In solidarity, Juan Flores-Zamora

CANDIDATE STATEMENT

Greetings! My name is Kerin Morataya and I’m a 1L from the PCL class of 2025. I am honored to be running as part of a slate of 1L classmates (Juan Flores-Zamora, Diana Cruz, Keeiarra Dashiell, Ana Minauri, and Ismael Venegas) hoping to become student members of People’s College of Law Community Board. If selected, I would work to increase student interaction with board members and would speak out on students’ behalf during closed-door meetings. With the help of technology, I’d like to find inexpensive ways to improve the way our college is run and gain access to the best online academic tools available in order to increase the pass rates for the FYLSX and the Bar. There is a sense of community and belonging amongst the class of 2025 that I want to continue fostering and I feel I could best do that as a student member of the Community Board. Thank you for your consideration.
