MBV BOARD HIGHLIGHTSBy Peter Cavoto, President

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the Board.! We hope you have time to spend with friends and family in our beautiful community. A special thanks to the lighting group for our decorations around the campus area. The Board approved the Superstition Kitchen remodel and it is scheduled to start in June. The diagram is in the activity office for viewing. The lights at the Sunset Center lost in the storm damage earlier this year have been replaced. We are waiting for the architect’s review of the Sunset Center and the Pickleball proposals to move forward. The Future Development Fund increase from home sales could be available for the Pickleball and Reserve Funds for the Sunset Center remodel.

MountainBrook Village Steering Committees and Volunteers:A volunteer is a person who freely offers to donate their time and

efforts for service in an enterprise or to undertake a task, project or responsibility.

The Board has a responsibility to serve the homeowners of MountainBrook Village in an objective manner. We make decisions for the welfare and enhancement of the value of MountainBrook. Our Volunteers and homeowners make MBV what it is. Committees are tasked with various assignments and make related recommendations to the Board.

To do that, we need many hands. We have many new homeowners, and with that comes new talent. We encourage all homeowners to be involved. We request and need your input and expertise as our Committees are a diverse representation of our homeowners. If you think the commitment of a committee is too demanding, then, please sign our expert book in the activity office. We have utilized the knowledge of a MBV engineer and architect to help us with the Sunset Center remodel and an interior designer for the Superstition and Sunset remodels. They have worked on Committees and helped with recommendations for the Board to consider.

All Steering and AdHoc committees serve at the pleasure of the Board for analysis and recommendations. Committees of the Board are as follows: 1. Activities in coordination with our Life Style Director, Jennifer, plan the activities. 2. Budget and Finance reviews expenditures monthly. 3. Building and Grounds does assessments of all buildings and recommends needed repairs, analyzes open space, walls, etc. for preservation. 4. Communications coordinates the website, Mountaineer, Audio-Visual, Phone book, signage, and most communication. 5. Planning and Design and Décor complete an annual review of the reserves to determine timing of replacement of assets and planning for remodels, additions, present and future needs of MBV. 6. Architectural reviews all requests submitted by homeowners for changes to the exterior of their homes. Committees of the Board typically meet once a month and may do workshops within the month to accomplish tasks and to analyze and review. Committee Chairmen attend a monthly meeting with the Board President.

The Board annually approves appointments of Committee Chairs and Steering Committee members. If you are interested in being a Chair, please email the board at [email protected]. If you are interested in being a volunteer or steering member, please sign the book in the office on behalf of the Committee. Each Committee can have several volunteers, but their charters allow 5 steering members to vote. This Board requests that all Committees allow all present to discuss items so that the voting is representative of the entire group. You can attend or volunteer on any committee you like or that you feel may be a good fit for you.

If you wish any further info about the Committees, feel free to attend meetings posted in the Mountaineer or talk to a Committee Chair or a Board member.

Remember, the residents make the Village and your input on committees and at Board Workshops and Meetings is valued. Let us all benefit from your skills, time and expertise. We need you.

From our ManagerAs the end of 2017 approaches I look back in gratitude. Grateful

for the beautiful community we have the privilege of being a part of. Thanks for friends, family, and neighbors. Thanks for dirty dishes, as it means we have food on our table. I am grateful to work with an amazing team of wonderful and talented people. There is so much to be grateful for that there are too many to list. I count my blessings every day.

As I walk around the community I see the sweetest acts of kindness. You, as homeowners, make our community what it is, and even the smallest kindness can make a world of difference to someone that may be in need. I am grateful to be able to witness some of these kindnesses.

On behalf of the our entire MountainBrook Village team and FirstService Residential, we thank you for the honor to be a part of your community. We wish you a very Happy Holiday and New Year!

Thank you for a wonderful 2017!Suzanne Murray, CMCA, AMS

It’s Luminary Time Again. A lot of work to do before Christmas Eve. We had such a wonderful group of volunteers last year and we had a lot of fun in the process. We’ll be assembling them in the Superstition Center starting at 8:00 am on Saturday, December 23. On Sunday, December 24th, at 2:00 pm, we’ll need cars and trucks to get them set out and lit by twilight. Homemade Blueberry Muffins for my elves (sorry, no grab and goes).

SHUFFLE, New York EnsembleGCAC Canyon Sounds PerformanceFriday, January 19, 2018, 7:30 pmVenue: Gold Canyon United

Methodist Church6640 S Kings Ranch Road, Gold

Canyon, AZInspiring and energetic, this modern

day six-piece ensemble, consisting of exceptional musicians, changes the rules of a concert as we know it. Unique to SHUFFLE’s performance is the manner in which the program is selected. Rather than a fixed repertoire, the audience acts like a “music shuffler”, actively participating in the selection of songs by choosing from a menu of over 30 compositions derived from 15 different styles. Works range from solos, duos up to sextets. Genres vary from classical, romantic, Broadway, Latin, and Jazz. The result is a very engaged audience and high energy performance.

SHUFFLE’s musicians have all won numerous prizes and performed extensively as soloists and collaborative musicians throughout the world. They are graduates of Juilliard, New England Conservatory, Manhattan School of Music, Bard College, and Oberlin.

Purchase advance adult tickets for $25, and students for $5 at Canyon Rose Storage, 6405 S. Kings Ranch Rd., Gold Canyon, and at the Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce office on the Apache Trail. Also, order via PayPal on our website www.gcac1.com. Adult tickets at the door are $30.

The Gold Canyon Arts Council, a non-profit organization, promotes the performing and visual arts and is supported in part by grants from the Arizona Commission on the Arts, WESTAF, the National Endowment for the Arts, local corporations, and businesses.

THOSE PESKY HOA’SThank you for being in Compliance

By Debbie O’BrienOver 120 homes have been sold this year, welcome to our new

homeowners! Here are some common tips everyone needs to be aware of to be in compliance with the Architectural Standards and the Board of Directors:

• Any change, addition or alteration to anything on the exterior of your home must be approved by the Architectural Committee prior to starting work. They meet every 2 weeks. The Request form is on the website and in the office

• All homeowner vehicles must be parked in the driveway or garage

• Golf carts and vehicles cannot be parked on gravel• Before painting or repainting your house, fill out the Paint

Approval Form from the office• Outdoor fixture lighting wattage is 40-50 watts per bulb,

per Pinal County light ordinance• Recreational vehicles, trailers, campers, etc. can only be

parked for 72 hours at your home for the purpose of loading and unloading, and shall not be occupied by anyone overnight

• Security system decals may be placed in windows only, signs in the yard are not permitted

• Mountain Brook Golf Club is private property and does not belong to MBV nor its residents, they do not permit walking or bike riding, it is not a dog park, they do call the Sheriff & Animal Control

• Garbage containers must be concealed from view in the garage or approved trash enclosure

• Stucco walls and wrought iron fences around your property must be painted the neighborhood theme color, not the color of your house or trim; white or almond are not approved colors

• Golf course homes, both sides of the wall/fence are your responsibility to paint, check with the office for your neighborhood theme color

• Front yards shall have one tree or cactus at least 6 feet tall and 10 desert shrubs (depending on the size of the front yard) from the approved plant and tree list

• It is the homeowner’s, not the contractor, painter, landscaper, nor the handyman’s responsibility to submit the “Request for Approval of Architectural Change”

• Replacement of Roof Underlayment and roof tiles must be approved by the Office, if broken tiles are being replaced and do not match, they must be placed in a random pattern on the least visible area of the roof

• If there is a common area in back of your home that needs maintenance, fill out a Common Area Work Order in the office, the tree tag number is needed and a detailed description of where the tree or shrub is located, NAOS areas will only be cleared out 5 feet from your back wall

• Pool rules are posted in the pool area and available in the office, no one under 18 is allowed in the Spa or Gym, no glass bottles or food allowed in the pool area

• If you need a copy of the Architectural Standards (Rules & Regulations) the Activities Office front desk staff can print a copy for you, the cost is $4

Trivia Night at MountainBrook Village

Wednesday Evening January 10th at 6:30 pm.Tables cost $20.00 per team. The Captain of your team purchases

a table/team in the Activities Office for $20.00. Teams can be composed of 2 to 8 people who all sit at the same table.

• Cell phones and computers/tablets are not allowed at your table.

• Teams may bring their own “munchies” and liquid refreshments.

• The game consists of 30 questions from various topics.

•The topic for the last question (Number 30) will be revealed in similar fashion to “Final Jeopardy” where each team can wager any, or all, of their points for the last question.

• The top two tables will win nice prizes for all members of their team.• Thirty tables (teams) are available for purchase. If more than 30

teams are sold, then we will hold a public lottery the morning of the event to see who gets a table. (It is not first come first serve as with many other events).

January Danceby Lynnel Cochrane

Van Morrison’s 1979 song ‘Bright Side of the Road’ comes to mind when we think of All Things Bright and Beautiful in MBV. We are so fortunate to live in endless sunshine with blue skies, stunning Superstition Mountain vistas and the opportunity to experience the remarkable desert vegetation, wildlife and unforgettable evening sunsets. On Friday, January 19, dancers and music listeners will enjoy the return of a very popular variety band called IMAGINE. There will be non-stop music to enjoy, something for everyone. Until then, we hope you take some time in the busy days ahead to ‘Listen to the Music’ as suggested in the 1972 Doobie Brothers song. Your Dance Committee wishes you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and we look forward to

Association Fee Payments Made Easy and It’s FREE by Diana Jensen

To address the question “why don’t our association fee invoices come first class so they get forwarded?”, I asked FirstService Residential for an explanation. This is the answer I received from Corporate: MBV uses a 3rd party vendor for our statement production and mailings. Our vendor ONLY uses 1st Class Mail to send out statements. In 2009 the USPS made changes and began a new program called, Move Update which requires an Ancillary Service Endorsement (Return Service Requested) to be posted on any mail piece using indicia (postal marking instead of a stamp)”. The best practice for receiving all important MountainBrook Village mail and billings is to sign up for eStatements (no cost) or notify us for each address change where you want your MBV mail to go. (I checked several of my personal envelopes (i.e., utility bills), that I received that said 1st class with this “indicia” post mark and yes, it said “Return Service Requested” which means it will not be forwarded.)

SO, that being said, invoices are sent first class bulk but are not forwarded, but returned as undeliverable.

If you would like to sign up for the easiest and FREE way to make sure that your Association Fees are paid, we are supplying you with a copy of the necessary form or go online at www.fsresidential.com. The FirstService Residential explanation is as follows:

“FirstService Residential has a program called “SurePay”, your payment comes out of your bank account twice a year, on the 2nd business day of the months January and July. You must set this up before December 25 for the payment to be made for January 1. It’s FREE, and if your assessment amount changes, SurePay will make the adjustment.”

Cut out the form on page 7, fill it out supplying all of the required information and mail it to arrive before December 25 to:

Information for our new neighbors and friends

Identifying Features The bark scorpions (Centriroides exilicauda) body has two parts,

a cephalothorax and abdomen. The tail is actually a part of the abdomen. It has five segments each longer than the last; at the tip is the stinger (not considered a segment). They have 8 jointed legs and a pair of pedipalps that are use for grasping prey and sensing.

AdaptationsScorpions have "hairs" on their legs and other body parts that are

sensitive to vibrations in the air. To avoid the extreme heat of the daytime they will shelter in the shade and come out at night to hunt for food. In the winter months they will hibernate, often congregating in large groups.

HabitatThe bark scorpion can be found in many places due to its ability to

climb. It can be found not only under rocks or in rock crevices, but also in trees or high on rock walls. They also can be found inside of peoples dwellings trapped in sinks or bathtubs, climbing walls, or in a dark closet.

RangeThe bark scorpion occurs from southern California through

southern Arizona into western New Mexico; and in adjacent Mexico (Baja California, Sonora, and Chihuahua).

Wild StatusThey are common and widespread throughout their range. DietScorpions are predators. They consume all types of insects, spiders,

centipedes, and even other scorpions. PredatorsScorpions are preyed upon by large centipedes, tarantulas, lizards,

birds (especially owls), and mammals such as bats, shrews, and grasshopper mice.

HomeThey prefer cool and moist areas and can be found in crevices,

under pieces of bark, under rocks, under bricks and in houses. Life SpanScorpions live at least 2-6 years although many live much longer,

especially in the wild. SizeThey are 2-3 inches long.

Extra Fun-facts Bark scorpions will glow a green color (fluoresce) under ultraviolet

light. This is the only species of scorpion in Arizona that is truly

considered as life threatening. Scorpions give birth to live young during the summer months. The

babies will crawl up their mother's pincers and legs to get on her back. They will ride around on her back until they molt in 7-21 days. (see picture above)

And then think “Oh, it’s probably too much trouble, I’ll just forget it.” Well most things are pretty simple, because, guess what? THERE IS A FORM FOR IT! And here is a picture of the binders those forms are in at the office, and best of all. they are alphabetical. Here is an example: If you want to place a classified ad in the Mountaineer, there is a form for that. Just fill it out and give it to one of the front office staff members. If you have some time maybe you would like to go to the office and just browse thru the binders to see what is available. Sounds like a fun afternoon doesn’t it?

Here are a few reminders:Before making any changes to your yard or the outside of your

house, there is a procedure for going through the Architectural Committee for approval.

There is also a book with all the paint choices approved for repainting. Be sure and check it out first, having to repaint again is no fun.

When planting or replanting, there is also a book with approved desert hardy shrubs and trees.

Remember, just because you see something in someone else’s yard doesn’t mean it has been approved.

Notary Services - FREEDebbie O’Brien, MBV Assistant Community Manager, has

her notary license and residents can get free notary service at the Activity Office. If you need notary service, please email Debbie at Debbie.O’[email protected] to schedule a time with her. Please note, walk up service is not available as Debbie is out and about doing MBV tours or at meetings throughout the week; therefore, any notary service request needs to be scheduled in advance with Debbie.

Let’s revisit the “Pedestrian” lane again . . .

It is not a passing lane or a right turn lane – all of which we have all probably observed at one time or another. (Pedestrians’ would include a person in a mobility device such as a scooter or power chair).

You have undoubtedly noticed that the two major streets within MountainBrook Village – MountainBrook Drive and Mountain Vista – have a roughly 8 foot wide portion of the roadway alongside the curb marked off by a solid white line. Apparently, not everyone is clear on just what the purpose is for this section of roadway. The primary function of this area is for a pedestrian walkway. Pedestrians have the ultimate right of way here. In the absence of pedestrians, it may be used for bicycle or golf cart traffic.

If a bicycle is using this ‘curb lane’ and encounters pedestrian traffic, the bicycle must yield to the pedestrian(s). The bicycle and pedestrian(s) MAY be able to pass each other safely while both in this lane; if so, fine. If this is not practical or possible, the bicycle must move into the regular roadway traffic lane. Once past the pedestrian(s), the bicycle may choose to return to the curb lane.

If a golf cart is using this curb lane and encounters pedestrian traffic, the golf cart must also yield to the pedestrian(s). Golf carts should move into the regular roadway traffic lane. Once past the pedestrian(s), the golf cart may choose to return to the curb lane.

A couple other related items of note: As you probably learned in grade school, pedestrians should always walk facing traffic. Golf carts must be licensed and insured, and are legally able to be driven on roads with a posted speed limit of 35 mph or less, which covers all streets in MBV.

The Fire Department responds quickly, but you must keep an eye on them until they get there.

Yikes! 13 rattlesnake species live in Arizona and some have seriously poisonous venom. Phoenix Herpetological Society says there are some things to do if you are bitten, (anything in parenthesis is editorial comments). Call 911 and stay calm (yeah right!). Keep the bitten area still, (very, very still). Remove any jewelry or constricting items near the affected area in case of swelling (for most of us that means unbutton your waistband). Elevate the extremity that’s bitten

BUT DO NOT – • Drive yourself to the hospital • Use ice to cool the bite • Cut open the wound and try to suck out the venom (yuck, and

definitely do not ask your spouse to do it either)• Use a tourniquet, it will cut off blood flow and the limb may be lost.

To repeat the TO DO’s – Call 911, keep calm, remove jewelry or other restricting items, elevate extremity and wait for medical help to arrive. This is good to know advice, but here’s hoping none of us ever have to use it.

LeAnn JuenemannMy formal training was a form

of art. I trained as a Radiologic Technologist at Fairview Hospital and the University of Minnesota. My pictures were in black & white on X-ray film. It was not until years later, after our boys were older, that I became interested in Fine Art.

My first leap was into oil painting. Taking classes at our local community college and seminars, I moved through oils, watercolor, photography and

finally pottery. As a member of the Saginaw, MI Artist Guild, I was exposed to many fine artists who were willing to teach and offer advice to this neophyte.

Moving to Kalamazoo, MI brought me to the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts where I was surrounded by outstanding artists. At that time, I started working with clay. First it was the wheel, then free form and now hand building. I continue to take classes, study on line and read articles on pottery. One can never stop learning. It is exciting to be surrounded with the many outstanding artists here at MountainBrook Village.

I am truly a lover of the outdoors which inspire so many creative ideas. Life is an adventure.

Artist of the Month

DINNER THEATEROn February 22, 2018 (Thursday) the Superstition Center curtain will proudly open to the premier performance of YOU CAN’T

TAKE IT WITH YOU, a comedy by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman for a three-day run (February 22-24). Opening night, and only opening night, will be highlighted as a “Dinner Theater”. Play Director, Randy Ratcliff and Lifestyle Director, Jennifer McGraw have collaborated and made special arrangements for the evening to be catered, offering prime rib and salmon as the entrees. Randy promises “no nuts in the menu - the only nuts you see that night will be on stage”. Opening night, as a dinner theater setting, will be a first here at MBV and every effort is being made to provide an enjoyable and memorable dinner theater event. Doors will open in plenty of time to be seated and relax as you enjoy your evenings meal before show time. Tickets will be $30 for both the dinner and the play and up to 8 tickets (8 seats per table) can be purchased. “Limited seating” tickets will go on sale Monday, January 29 at 9 am. Friday and Saturday performances will be reserved seating only for $10 each. More on this next month.

Not only will the Dinner Theater be a first; 18 actors will be the most to appear on stage in a play here in MountainBrook; and 10 of those 18 actors will be on our stage for their first times. Some of the props in the play are the sounds of fire crackers, snakes in an aquarium, a xylophone, mysterious letters found in their ice box (remember, the play takes place in the 1930’s), and other props that we may tease you with in next month’s article.

December 2017

Two little children were sitting by the fire one cold winter’s night. All at once they heard a timid knock at the door, and

one ran to open it.

There, outside in the cold and the darkness, stood a child with no shoes upon his feet and clad in thin, ragged gar-

ments. He was shivering with cold, and he asked to come in and warm himself.

“Yes, come,” cried both the children; “you shall have our

place by the fire. Come in!”

They drew the little stranger to their warm seat and shared their supper with him, and gave him their bed, while they

slept on a hard bench.

In the night they were awakened by strains of sweet music and, looking out, they saw a band of children in shining garments approaching the house. They were playing on

golden harps, and the air was full of melody.

Suddenly the Stranger Child stood before them; no longer cold and ragged, but clad in silvery light.

His soft voice said: “I was cold and you took Me in. I was

hungry, and you fed Me. I was tired, and you gave Me your bed. I am the Christ Child, wandering through the world to bring peace and happiness to all good children. As you have given to Me, so may this tree every year give

rich fruit to you.”

So saying, He broke a branch from the fir tree that grew near the door, and He planted it in the ground and disap-peared. But the branch grew into a great tree, and every year it bore wonderful golden fruit for the kind children.

Looking for ideas for entertaining your winter visitors, keep an eye out for In The Territory to help you out.

In The Territory....by Mike Karr

Ever wonder who Col. William Boyce Thompson was? From humble beginnings in Montana where he had a lackluster interest in education, his family sent him to a prep school in New England, then in 1889 he lasted a single year at Columbia University. His family had been in the mining business in Montana, and he made his first million trading mining stocks on the NYSE in 1906. The next year he bought the Magma Mine in Superior, AZ, and by 1917 he had made a fortune trading mining stocks on Wall Street. In 1924 he started construction on his Picket Post home and created the Boyce Thompson Arboretum. After the market crash in 1929 he was down to his last $100 million, but suffered a stroke and died in 1930.

The Arboretum is about 25 miles east of MBV on Highway 60 at milepost 223. This World Class Botanical Garden consists of over

3,200 desert plants tucked in between the surrounding cliffs and along Queen Creek, which runs along part of the 1.5-mile Main Trail. Over 230 species of birds have been identified in the Arboretum as well. Your canine friends are welcome to roam the grounds with you and enjoy special features like the Upland Sonoran Natural Area, Wing Memorial Herb Garden, Eucalyptus Forest, Cactus & Succulents Garden, Australian Desert Exhibit, Greenhouse Display or Drover's Wood Shed. And there is more with the Picket Post Home, picnic

areas, Visitors' Center and Gift Shop, Smith In te rpre ta t ive Center and the Demonstration Gardens.

Many MBV r e s i d e n t s are already members of the Arboretum, but if you haven't visited,

it is an absolute “must” if you have any interest in the desert landscape. We've combined our tours with lunch at Porter's and Los Hermano's in Superior, and found it to be a wonderful place to take our winter visitors. Check out their website at ag.arizona.edu/bta to find information about their special activities and when they are conducting tours which is a great way to learn about all of the biodiversity and beauty of the Boyce Thompson Arboretum.

Congratulations to those players and thank you to all who represented our growing club as participants and spectators. The newly formed MBV pickleball league started play on Nov.14th. We have two divisions. After one week of intense competition, we have several teams tied for the top spot in each division. Stop by at 1:00pm on Tuesday and Thursday to cheer on the contestants.

Tuesday National Mah JonggFREE LESSONS will be offered

on Tuesdays at 9:30am, beginning November 28th in the Sunset Room, led by the excellent guidance of one of our players. It’s a fun and interesting game with its own beauty and excitement, and is very popular in MountainBrook. (It’s not the same matching game you may play on your computer!) You are also welcome to come observe the game any time before the lessons begin. We play using the National Mah Jongg League card and rules. All of us who play Mah Jongg on Tuesdays invite you to join us in the Sunset Room, beginning at 9:30am. Come in the morning, the afternoon, or bring your lunch and play all day. We welcome all newcomers and any Mah Jongg player who may feel a bit rusty. We promise to make it a fun time for all. If you have any questions about the game, the lessons, or the group, please call Janie at 480-258-2336.

Tennis Talk by Betsey Baker

The MBV Tennis Club welcome back dinner was held on November 18th, with a wonderful turnout of tennis players and supporters. Currently the club has 74 members. Three tables and six chairs were purchased by the MBV Tennis Club for the courts. Round Robin continues Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8-10 am. Winter league play begins in January with Women’s, Men’s, and Mixed Doubles. For more information, contact President, Diana Hager 480-292-0462.

Doubles tennis strategy: Get up to the net, both of you! You’ve heard it over and over “the team that controls the net, controls the match”. So, you and your partner must always be working towards taking over the net. Usually, if you’re both playing back or you’re playing one-up, one-back, you’re playing defensively and that is not a winning game plan. Make it your goal to control the net as often as you can. See YOU on the courts.

FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY by Nancy Bozek

LIBRARY NOTESGreetings, Bibliophiles from the Library

crew. We’re so pleased to see so many returning residents and all the new MBV residents. If you newbies haven’t taken a look at our library be sure to do so. You’ll find all genres of books, an audio/visual section, Wi-Fi connection, a couple of reading areas: even a puzzle in constant progress. When you consider that our library is stocked entirely by donation, it’s impressive. There is no sign out for books, but there are sign out books for DVD’s and audio books. When returning those, please double check to be sure all the discs are being returned. It is soooo easy to forget to eject that last disc out of the player. You’ll also find a counter of freebees. If there’s something there you like, take it. Just don’t return it. It’s yours!! This is your library: enjoy it and thank you for your continued donations.

MountainBrook Chess ClubLove the game? Want to Learn? Please join us for friendly Chess

play in the Sunset Center, Room A, on Sundays at 3 pm. We provide mentoring and guaranteed fun. For more information, please contact Pam Lane-Garon @ 559-260-3379.

Book Discussionby Peggy Malsom

My parents were born and raised in the South. Every three or four years we would make the journey from Idaho to visit our southern relatives. I knew we had crossed a line when my hair frizzed, and we started getting biscuits instead of toast for breakfast. Even as a child, the many differences in regions were obvious. Join us Wednesday, January 14, to discuss Colin Woodward’s “American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America.” Woodward doesn’t see the states as United, but as a fractured continent with rivalries and alliances based upon the settlement patterns of our immigrant ancestors. No simple blue/red electoral map for Woodward. Bring your book along with “your religious, political and ethnographic characteristics.” This could get interesting. See you at 1 o’clock in the Mesquite Room.

PILATES WITH FRANIf you are interested in a fun total body toning class concentrating

on your core, this class is for you. Beginners and veterans welcome. Classes are the same as the video classes that have been held in the fall. Jan Grant will continue those classes until January. The only difference will be a live instructor starting on January 15th. For those not familiar with Pilates, all work is done on the floor on a mat. There is no special equipment needed. Pilates is designed to improve your shape, posture and balance by strengthening core muscles. Though the core is emphasized, all muscle groups are targeted. Classes are lighthearted and fun. All you have to lose are inches. Spring 2017 classes will be held on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 9am in the MPR. Any questions, please call or email: Fran Strickler, Certified Pilates and Fitness Instructor (317) 797-9224 or [email protected]

SUPPER CLUBSupper Club doesn’t meet and eat in December but resumes in

January. Saturday the 13trh to be exact. And here’s a menu teaser for you - Cheese Crispy appetizer, broccoli salad, roast chicken and a meringue dessert. It’s certainly not too late to join us for that dinner. Just call Marcia Ritenhour 480-288-6627 and let her know you want to be included. Buy your cookbook and you’re off and running for a year of good food and frolic. And after looking at the 2018 cookbook (yep, we’re all cooking the same thing) I can assure you that the rest of the months’ lineup of foods is just as good. And I will remind you that this is not just a “couple’s” club, it is a MBV club. But if you’re hesitant to join as a single, grab a buddy and join as a twosome. That’s what I did. “If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.” J.R.R. Tolkien. Ruth Parker 253-278-2759

10:00 Co-Ed Water AerobicsGeared for exercise and socializing afterward, the class is Monday

through Thursday mornings at 10:00. Just show up at the pool. No equipment needed. Any questions call or text Ann Rasmussen at 651-249-6958 or you can e-mail me at [email protected].
