Previous BBC service and length of service: 22 years in News and CurrentAffairs. Assistant Producer, One and Six O’Clock News. Senior BroadcastJournalist, Ten O’Clock News.

Previous committee and or pension scheme experience if relevant: Notsubmitted.

StatementThe role of a producer involves an ability to assess information – often at speed– and decide on priorities. There is then a need to be competent at logistics – theability to decide on what is possible and practical. I feel this experience will beinvaluable when presented with decisions at the Trust.

Financial stories are a significant element in all news bulletins and over the yearsI have developed and understanding of the economy and of financial institutions.The Credit Crunch was emerging as an important story during my last months onthe Ten – meaning we all had to familiarise ourselves with aspects of banking wehad not encountered before.

On a personal level, I am collegiate by nature and enjoy working in a team. I amenthusiastic and enjoy a new challenge. I am an active member of a fund-raisingcommittee for the NSPCC which involves event management and chairing asubcommittee.

Finally I have huge regard for the management of the BBC pension fund and wouldfeel honoured to pay my part as a trustee.

StatementThe Pension Fund needs to be sacrosanct, ring-fenced and placed in minimalrisk investments in these turbulent times. We need to work closely with the BBCto maintain its pension contribution as a priority.

Over thirty years I gained broad experience in Engineering, Tech Ops andProduction in the BBC, including negotiating budgets and contracts, bringinguseful attributes to the board.

StatementWe are living through worrying times: by the Trustees’ own admission, the BBCPension Scheme has felt the negative impact of the current economic turndown.In that context, the Trustees’ role as guardians of the members’ financial interestshas become even more important.

We all want to make sure the Pension Scheme is run with financial acumen,intelligence and resourcefulness. In addition it’s vital the BBC be kept on side andthe relationship between the Pension Scheme and the Corporation remains onpositive footing.

I was a BBC World Service Journalist for nearly 30 years, during which I hadample opportunity to demonstrate my understanding of current affairs and abilityto brief myself on complex issues, together with an unwavering commitment tothe BBC’s principles of accuracy and objectivity.

As a journalist I always relished a challenge; as a relatively young BBC pensionerI’m asking for your support in undertaking a new, but equally demandingchallenge – that of becoming a BBC Pension Scheme Trustee.

In return for your vote I pledge to give as much time and energy as necessary todefend your interests and make sure you are kept informed of any developmentsthat affect your pension.

Previous BBC service and length of service: Various sections, including:Registry, Music Division, Technical Services (Radio), T.V. News, Current Affairs,Purchasing etc., Thirty-Four years service in total.

Previous committee and or pension scheme experience if relevant: For anumber of years, I Served as Secretary and committee member of “Radio Kings”a hospital radio station based at Kings College Hospital London, dedicated to thewelfare of patients. In this post I learned much of disciplinary procedure

StatementDuring my thirty-four years of service with the BBC, I worked in variousdepartments including: Music Division, School Broadcasting and TechnicalServices (Radio) All this gave me a wide experience in the broad spectrum of theBBC and brought me into contact with people from varied backgrounds andcultures. Thus I gained the knowledge, experience and understanding on how todeal with their differing outlook and needs. Additionally, I was involved from theoutset in Parliamentary Broadcasting (sound and vision) which - like MusicDivision - meant I had to expect a great deal of temperament and resolve a crisisin a calm, reasoned manner.

I also held a committe-post as secretary for a hospital radio-station. This meant learning how to conduct comittee-meetings and listen sympatheticallyto any complaints and deal with disputes, plus acquiring the corrrect procedurein dealing with matters requiring tactful arbitration in the welfare of stationmembers.

I feel that if elected, I could make a significant contribution to the BBC TrusteeBoard; putting the experiences I have had in the past to good use at Trusteemeetings, aided by the proposed training.

Previous BBC service and length of service: I joined the BBC in 1967 as aTrainee Engineer and worked for External Services at short wave transmittersites in this country and overseas. After twelve years I moved to BBC RadioManchester as a Broadcast Engineer and then in 1984 was promoted to thenew local radio station in Shropshire as Engineer in Charge. In 1994 I wasappointed Area Engineering Manager for the West Midlands local radio stations.During the next seven years I represented my area on various committeesbefore taking early retirement in 2001.

I then worked on a freelance basis in several engineering departments andfinally “retired” in 2007.

Previous committee and or pension scheme experience if relevant: Notsubmitted

StatementDuring 40 years service I was always an enthusiastic supporter of the BBCPension Scheme. Many a new member of staff was on the receiving end of my“pension lecture” extolling the benefits of one of the best schemes in the country.Thankfully most did buy added years and/or AVCs and today will be very glad theydid.

I believe I have the relevant experience and continued enthusiasm which wouldenable me to undertake the position of Pensioner Trustee in a professional anddedicated manner. It is very important that the feelings and views of existingpensioners are fully represented when important decisions are taken involving thescheme, especially so in these rapidly changing and financially troubled times.

Perhaps we require a review of the way in which the annual pension increase iscalculated. Taking, for instance, an average of the RPI over the previous twelvemonths would produce a more representative assessment, rather than the currentmethod of using the December figure.

At the age of 61, I feel confident in my ability to represent the views and concernsof today’s pensioners.

Previous BBC service and length of service:

Joined 1983 retired 2008,

Personnel Officer Studios, Network and Recording.

Personnel Manager and then Group Head of HR responsible for News andCurrent Affairs, F&L, Sport, DEC, Radio, TV and New Media.

Retired May 2008 as Head of HR, News and Current Affairs

Previous committee and or pension scheme experience if relevant:

Member of the senior management boards in News and Current Affairs, Factualand Learning, Radio and Music and HR. Also on the finance committees of thefirst 3 divisions and the editorial board in NCA. Numerous working parties andcommittees developing and implementing HR policies e.g. Pay and Reward,Conditions of Service. Also a BBC representative on Divisional and NationalLiaison and Negotiating committees with the joint trades unions. Outside ofwork I have helped with various school and rugby club fund raising events.

StatementIn twenty-five years at the BBC, I saw first hand the value and quality of work ofthe Pensions team and as a senior HR professional, with their guidance, helpedhundreds of staff through the complexities of pensions in a straight forward andclear way. Everyone’s needs were different, but all recognised the importance ofthe investment they and the BBC had made in their future through the Pension,either on retirement or in those difficult or sad times when a loved one has diedor is ill. It is critical that Trustees give the best possible advice to make the rightdecisions. I believe my background and personal skills offer this and if elected, Iwould seek to ensure that benefits are protected through the difficult financialtimes now and into the future.

Having worked in many different departments and divisions at a senior level I offerexperience resolving complex and difficult situations with fairness and sensitivity.Working with both management and all three unions I am known for my commonsense approach but also the ability to ask difficult questions when necessary. Iam financially literate and as a law graduate have a good understanding of legalmatters.

Previous committee and or pension scheme experience if relevant:

As Head of Employment Policy I was chair of the Joint Pension LiaisonCommittee, a member of the Pension Review Committee and responsible fordeveloping and applying the BBC’s pension policy. As Head of Pension andBenefits Centre I administered the BBC Pension Scheme. This included benefitrecords and payments, statutory compliance, accounts and audit, safe custodyof cash and investments, communications, approval of discretionary benefits,consolidating the Trust Deed and Rules, initiating and developing thegovernance policy, scheme design and budgetary control.

From 1988 to 2001 I was a Trustee of the Grace Wyndham Goldie Trust Fundand the BBC Benevolent Fund.

From 2002 to 2004 I was Treasurer of the Pembroke Festival Committee.

Since 2005 I have been the BBC Pension Scheme pensioner elected Trusteeand have just been appointed deputy chair of the new Finance, Audit & RiskCommittee. During the last year I was part of a working group that reviewedand recommended changes to strengthen the Scheme’s governance.

StatementThe current economic downturn has seen banks collapse, insurance companiestotter, credit restricted, asset values decline and closure of salary relatedoccupational pension schemes to new members. Volatility in equity markets andincreasing longevity have added significantly to the cost of pension provision.Against this turbulent background the Trustees must plan for the future and actpositively to protect the interests of members. In doing so, they will need to:

• maintain a steady approach to Scheme funding and investment strategy,acting only when they have a clear indication of economic trends;

• continue working towards mitigating the effects of volatile markets andachieving a better match between assets held and the benefits promised;

• monitor closely the BBC’s willingness and ability to continue funding salaryrelated retirement benefits;

• develop and maintain a protocol that ensures a positive and open dialoguewith the BBC regarding funding, governance and statutory compliance;

• agree a contributions schedule that is realistic and reasonably affordable,both for the BBC and active members, but also ensures the Trustees meettheir statutory funding objective over time.

I believe I have the knowledge and experience necessary to contribute positivelytowards navigating the Scheme safely through these difficult times.

Previous BBC service and length of service: I joined the BBC as an assistantfilm editor and retired as a TV producer after 25 years, in 2002.

Previous committee and or pension scheme experience if relevant: Notsubmitted.

StatementAfter finding myself booted into the long grass at the tender age of fifty by a BBCkeen to divest itself of older staff producers, I was furious with the BBC beancounters and their fashionable management nostrums. Who were these peoplethat had taken over my BBC? Of course I quickly figured out that being pensionedoff early by the BBC was a bit like winning the pools, not like winning the NationalLottery perhaps, but not to be sneezed at either.

But today, seven years later, my subjective impression is that our pensions arefalling behind the actual rate of inflation, that pensioners perhaps need a dedicatedPensioners Price Index that reflects real pensioner costs.

I make no claims of financial expertise, but I hope to bring to the party a watchfuleye, a readiness to question, to think anew, and an appreciation that we are incompletely uncharted waters in terms of our understanding of how investmentmarkets will work in the future.

Part of me still feels very much part of the BBC world and I think it behoves olderBBC hands to protect BBC staff interests diligently. This is an opportunity to dothat.

StatementThe BBC offers one of the best pensions available in today’s market and goingforward we need to maintain this situation. I have 30+ years experience in financialaffairs with 10 years at senior/board level. I have worked in the investment ofpension funds in the past.

My main aim on behalf of current pensioners would be to ensure all actions takenin managing the fund are in their interests and in safeguarding their future income.

Caring for other peoples pensions is a huge responsibility that cannot be takenlightly. As a Trustee of the BBC pension fund I would use my experience to monitorthe performance of investments to ensure the best returns which would secureour retirement incomes.

Whatever the size of individual pension, its security is vitally important to therecipient so the BBC scheme’s future performance clearly requires assuredinvestment. I hope to bring my enthusiasm to this demanding and responsibleposition of Pensioners’ Trustee.

Previous BBC service and length of service: BBC Leeds 19½ years SeniorTechnical Operator. Freelance contractor sixteen years BBC Hull two years.

Previous committee and or pension scheme experience if relevant: BECTUlocal committee. Member of Equitable Life Scheme.

StatementI have worked both inside and outside the corporation during my 40 year careerin broadcasting. When I joined as a Technical Assistant, one of the most importantpoints made, was the value of the Pension fund to an employee. It was held up asa prized asset. Nineteen years later left the BBC as staff and became a freelancenews cameraman

Although I left the scheme I soon became aware of how the general populationprovided for their old age, and frankly, it was an eye opener. I covered news storieswhere a company workforce lost the whole of their pension. It seemedunbelievable, as I thought they were safeguarded by government regulations. Ijoined the Equitable Life scheme only to see its structure disintegrate. I now takenothing for granted.

Meanwhile at the BBC it was clear that the pension fund was well managed andstill supported by the management. I became aware of the political pressure andvariations of the funding formula. I am very grateful for the provision it has givenme and feel I can offer my life experience and judgment to contribute towardsdecision making for the BBC Pension scheme.

Previous committee and or pension scheme experience if relevant:Governor & Chair of Audit Committee Barnet College, Trustee & Chair of theOpen Learning Partnership: an educational charity

Hon. Treasurer & Chair Royal Television Society, London Centre; Branch Chair,Southampton Branch of the ABAS union (now BECTU)

StatementThe broad range of my career will help me to represent all BBC pensioners. I haveworked in operations and as a programme maker in radio and television inLondon, the regions and World Service and have experienced life both as staffand as a freelance.

My first priority as a trustee, would be to ensure that, even in difficult times, theBBC Pension Scheme can meet its obligations and provide a fair pension for allits members.

My second priority will be improved communications. Fragmentation of ourindustry has made individual pensions increasingly complex. Although we receiveregular general information about the Scheme, there are people who have lostmoney because of a lack of clear and timely individual communication. This mustchange.

The additional skills that I offer include considerable experience of effectivegovernance with over a decade as a governor and Audit Committee chair of oneof the country’s largest Further Education Colleges, seven years as treasurer andnow chair of the Royal Television Society’s London Centre and five years as chairof trustees for an educational development charity.

Above all, I will always put the interest of members first.

Previous BBC service and length of service: I joined as a Technical Assistantin 1963. After 29 years of service in various engineering posts in London,Cardiff, Manchester I left the BBC as Engineering Services Manager Bristol in1992.

Previous committee and or pension scheme experience if relevant:Chairman Royal Television Society (North)

BBC Club Chairman Manchester

Modifications Committee, Engineering Division.

StatementSince leaving the BBC in 1992, on early retirement and redundancy terms, I havegiven advice to BBC staff on the options available to them with their pension andgeneral advice about investments. This was given over a period of 12 years, as aqualified financial adviser, on a one to one basis and at seminars held on BBCpremises.

Recent falls in the value of our pension fund, caused by troubled financial markets,will concern scheme members and Trustees. The Pension scheme employsprofessional investment advisers. As your elected your Trustee I will diligentlymonitor their activities to safeguard our/the pension fund.

The BBC makes varying contributions to the pension fund at which should besufficient to meet the current and future pension payments of its members. I willstrive to ensure the contributions are maintained at an appropriate level that willallow the continuance of our excellent pension scheme.

As a Trustee I will make it my highest priority to ensure the best interests of thepension scheme beneficiaries are met, whether they are pensioners, deferredpensioners, widows, dependents or actively contributing members.

Previous BBC service and length of service: 4/78 – 9/90 – 12 years

Latterly Chief Personnel Officer News & Current Affairs.

Previous committee and or pension scheme experience if relevant: Sec toPension Trustees, Cons Assn; Pension Trustee, Consumers’ Assn PensionScheme 2000 to present; committee member BBC Pensioners’ Assn 1995-1998.

StatementAs, Jo Marsh, I spent twelve years in the BBC working in Personnel;- in FilmDepartment, Television Programmes, BBC Wordwide and latterly as ChiefPersonnel Officer, News and Current Affairs. As a result, I have a goodunderstanding of the BBC and its core values; and I am familiar with the PensionScheme as if affects both staff and pensioners.

I left the BBC to become HR Director for Consumers’ Association. As part of myresponsibilities I was Secretary to the Pension Trustees. Since leaving CA, I have,for the past eight years, been a Trustee of the CA Pension Scheme. I am thereforevery familiar with the current challenges facing all schemes;

• the development of an effective investment strategy to withstand economicturbulence and uncertainty

• an unprecedented increase in longevity

• the massive increase in pension regulation

• the need to work closely with the BBC to produce a mutually acceptablefunding regime in the light of a valuation deficit.

I would welcome the opportunity to use my knowledge and experience tocontribute to the BBC Scheme as the Pensioner Trustee and believe that I canmake a valuable contribution. I would be grateful for your support
