D’var Halacha PLUS Rabbi Asher Klein, Flatbush ‘94

Q I was recently reading the Shul’s newsletter

and I saw that the shul was publicizing an

event called B.L.T. Firstly, how can a shul

have an event in which you are serving bacon, let-

tuce, and tomatoes? Is there some sort of bacon

that is kosher that has reached the kosher market,

and if so, where can I find it? If not, how can the

shul be associated with a non-kosher product? Is-

n’t this a violation of marit ayin, leading others

astray based upon misconceptions or misunder-

standings? Furthermore, why would the shul offer

such significant sandwiches so early in the morn-

ing, when dinner or lunch are the traditional time

to have a B.L.T.? Lastly, if one is having a B.L.T.

and already violating the halachot of kashrut,

should they then “go all the way” and add cheese

to the sandwich, adding the cooking and consump-

tion of milk and meat together to their list of viola-

tions? On the other hand, would this action negate

the acronym and cause the sandwich to be a

BLTCH with the CH standing for cheese? Another

consideration that must be dealt with is that once

you are already adding a fourth food item, a vowel

is probably necessary. Perhaps adding an egg to

the sandwich and simply calling it a

D’var Halacha Rabbi Asher Klein, Rambam ‘98

Q As I was preparing for Purim, I realized that I

have not yet begun to bake Hamentashen. I am

now extremely pressed for time. Please let me

know how many Hamentashen one must eat on Purim

in order to fulfill the minimal obligation. Further-

more, please let me know how integral the filling is to

the baking of the Hamentashen, as all I have in my

home to fill the Hamentashen is ּפumּפkin pie filling.

A Firstly, I feel terribly for you that you are so

stressed about fulfilling your obligation to have

Hamentashen on Purim. Purim is supposed to be a

joyous time, and the Gemara tells us (Bedichut 29b) that

there is no joy greater to Man then the eating of another per-

son’s hat. For that reason, I encourage you to try to remem-

ber to enjoy the preparations of Purim and not be stressed by

this age-old halachah. Below are several halachot related to

Hamentashen that should help guide you:

1 - The minimum amount of Hamentashen eaten is three per

household, irrespective of the amount of members in the

home. All members of the home, including pets, may con-

sume Hamentashen. The most important aspect of the mitz-

vah is consuming the hats of Haman in their entirety by

nightfall, fulfilling the mitzvah of destroying the memory of

Amalek. All leftover crumbs should be carefully stored and

burned prior to Pesach. אזני המן ( Hamentashen in Hebrew)

have a gematria (numerical equivalent) of 164. הקנדה ( the

Country of Canada) has the same gematria. For this reason,

Canadians have always been especially careful with the

mitzvah of Hamentashen, and prepared no less than 11

Hamentashen per household (representing Haman and his

ten sons). Some Canadians prepare 11 batches of Hamen-

tashen, while others prepare 11 bags of flour worth of

Hamentashen. Each Canadian should consult with their local

rabbi to clarify the proper manner to observe this mitzvah.

2 - The Ba’al Hashdus (chelek 3, perek 3, ha-

פסק הלכה ממרא דאתרא קדישא הדין ודי בכל אתר ואתר

Essential Rashi’s 1) Why does the Torah describe both the animal and bird offer-

ings as a "satisfying aroma?" (1:17)

2) The Torah forbids bringing honey with the mincha. What is

meant by "honey?"

1) To indicate that the size of the offering is irrelevant, provided your heart is directed toward G-d. 2) Any sweet fruit derivative.

lacha 3) discusses whether diagonally cutting a square pastry will

leave the resulting two triangles as halachically viable Hamentashen,

or lacking the third barrier of dough around the filling nullifies their

status to triangle cookies, which cannot be used for the mitzvah. He

concludes that one should not rely upon these for the mitzvah, and

that a blessing will befall any scrupulous individual who consumes

all square and triangular cookies on Purim by nightfall on order to

ensure that no memory or potential memory (hechsher zechirah) of

Haman endures beyond the day of Purim.

3 - Proper filling is a critical aspect to the fulfillment of the mitzvah.

The Shulchan Aruch states that all fillings that are “sweet, gooey, and

gooey and sticky in a liquid state, leading many halachic decisors to

advise against any use of chocolate in the Hamentashen preparation.

Our Shul has really grown over the past couple of years! It's great that we have so many new people in our Minyan, and we have no one to thank more than the Alters and Kleins. "Let's Do Lunch" is an opportunity to give back to the Alters and Kleins by cooking them Shabbat meals together with people we have never met and would never have imag-ined spending time with for any other reason.

The Alters and Kleins would like to begin receiving their free Thank You meals as soon as possible, so expect a call in the near future. If your cooking is well regarded around town, you may be called sooner. If your guests tend to bring food with them when they visit, you may be waiting a while.

The goal isn't to prepare an elaborate meal, but rather to help relieve the guilt that is on the shoulders of a thankless community for these courageous souls who have cashed in a life of prestige and happiness to save our wayward souls. Owing to the equal importance of our special donors in securing the future of our community, sponsors of $1000 are exempt.
