Welcome from the President
Competitions are the heart of the Royal Queensland Show (Ekka) as they encourage exhibitors to strive to produce the best of the best year in year out.
The state’s largest annual event has seen competitors rewarded and recognised for their skill, hard work and dedication since 1876.
In 2017, as Ekka celebrated its 140th anniversary, Queensland’s premier competition event attracted 21,000 entries across 13,000 classes in 48 competition sections.
More than 4,100 exhibitors competed for their chance to take home a coveted blue ribbon and share in a prize pool of more than $565,000. This included 1,378 new competitors.
Our competitions continue to grow in popularity each year. Last year saw a record 2,889 entries received in the beef sections, while Woodchop and Sawing entries reached 2,000 for the very first time - an increase of 30 per cent on 2016.
Painting and Drawing, Pisciculture, Poultry, Quilts Across Queensland, Sculpture, Bush Poetry and Wool also enjoyed increases in entries.
Some of our competitions were even recognised at the 2017 International Association of Fairs and Expositions (IAFE) Awards, which represents more than 1,100 fairs around the world.
The RNA received a total of 19 international awards for excellence, six of those for our competitions, with Woodchop and Sawing, Paddock to Palate and Pisciculture among those recognised.
For 143 years, the RNA has been dedicated to celebrating and championing agriculture and the critical role it plays in the everyday lives of Queenslanders.
The RNA is honoured to stage the Ekka, the people’s show, on behalf of the community each year, showcasing the best of the best to an average of around 400,000 people.
Good luck and we look forward to seeing your high quality entries at the 2018 Royal Queensland Show.

Queensland’s coastline, in country New South Wales, at the Ekka (Obedience and
DWD) and in the Northern Territory. This year marks 20 years in Obedience judging for
Ms Mannion.
Ms Moira Bruce (Queensland) Judging: Agility and Jumping
For as long as she can remember dogs have been a huge part of Moira’s life. At
around 12 years old she saw an agility demonstration at a local Pet Expo and from
that moment it became her goal to one day get a chocolate Border Collie and take
part in such an incredible team sport. Moira got her chocolate Border Collie “Fly” in
2006 and has been a member of Dogs Queensland since then. She has been heavily
involved in Agility over the years and has also competed in Conformation Showing,
Rally O and Obedience – titling her dogs in all these disciplines.
Moira is proud of her results as an agility handler and the success of her dogs. Her
dogs have placed in the top 10 South East QLD Agility and Jumping Dog of the Year
6 times since 2010, and have placed in both State and National events.
She is always looking to further her knowledge and skills in agility. She attends
courses and keeps up to date with the latest handling techniques and course design
and is always happy to pass on her knowledge and has instructed agility for many
years at her local ANKC clubs. She has also assisted the Border Collie Club of QLD to
organise the dog sports events at the 2016 4th Border Collie Nationals.
In 2015 she decided to become an Agility Judge and has judged at many
competitions locally and has travelled interstate for numerous judging appointments.
She feels that judging is an incredible experience; being able to develop a course and
then stand in the middle judging the skills and teamwork of the dogs and handlers.
Moira has competed at the Royal Brisbane Show many times over the years with her
own dogs and is now looking forward to judging at such a fabulous event where
handlers can showcase their beautiful dogs across all the disciplines.
She wishes all the best to everyone competing this year.

and is the same as what was used in 2014 to 2017.
2.1 Obedience judging will commence at the conclusion of the
group judging on Friday 10 August and Monday 13
August 2018
2.2 Agility, Dances with Dogs, Jumping and Rally Obedience
will be held on Sunday 19 August. Please refer to judging
timetable for more information.
2.3 With the concept of judging a Group per day the Canine
Section is also introducing class judging as well as per
2016 and 2017. It is primarily the same that is conducted
at any All Breeds Championship Show. The following is
the format in which it will take:
Baby Puppy in Group - Each Baby of Breed will
compete for Baby in Group at Group Specials on the
day. The winning Baby Puppy of Group will then return
on Saturday 19 August to compete for Baby Puppy in
Show.
Champion Puppy in Group – The winner of the
Champion Puppy in Group, which will compete for the
Champion Puppy in Show, will be decided from the
winner of the Best Minor in Group and Best Puppy in
Group Exhibits.
Other classes will be judged accordingly with the
Best in Group eliminating a class, the same as Runner
Up. Should either come from Puppy then this would
eliminate the Puppy Class: The same that is
conducted at All Breeds Shows now with the
exception of Champion Puppy in Group.
Classes in Group judging will only be conducted at this
level and not at Show level. It is not compulsory for Runner
Up in Group winners to return and compete on 18th
August if they do not wish to do so.
2.4 The Feature Show judging will be based on the 4 – 1
placing system for the finals, the same way as it has been
conducted in the last few years.
2.5 If any Exhibitor is not present when called for any class or
award the judging will proceed in his or her absence, and
the exhibit declared absent.
2.6 Any dog entered for competition and present at the Show
may not be withdrawn from competition without the
consent of the Councillor or Honorary Council Steward.
2.7 Any exhibit, if found to be entered in the wrong class, will
be transferred to the Open class.
2.8 Any exhibit incorrectly nominated on the Application to
Enter form by an Exhibitor will be declared ineligible.
2.9 Exhibitors must wear only one exhibit number at any one
time on the left side whilst in the assembly area and
judging ring. The Exhibitor must ensure they have the
correct number of the dog as indicated in the catalogue.
3. ENTRY, EXIT & COMPETITOR PASSES

and exit the Dog Pavilion through the entrance located on
St Paul’s Terrace (Gate 2a). Exhibitors are able to drive

being parked. On arrival, exhibitors will be given their
exhibit numbers upon presentation of their exhibit listing.
3.1 Entry to the grounds is strictly from 6.00am. All dogs must

for the day. Any Exhibitor who is unable to conform to
these times and conditions should not submit an entry.
Any alterations to the arrival and departure times of

given a number of breeds and the area of benches
reflecting the number of exhibits entered on the day to be
benched. Your joint cooperation is appreciated.
4.8 Exhibitors travelling to attend this Show must gain
permission from the Councillor or Honorary Council
Steward to bench exhibits not entered on the day. Dogs
MUST NOT be left unattended in cars or trailers on days
they are not being shown.
4.9 Exhibitors are advised that the exercise area will be
available during operational hours of the pavilion each day.
This is the only area which is to be used for your dogs to
relieve themselves. In the interest of maintaining a high
standard of hygiene and health, it is the responsibility of
