A song can tell the stories of our lives. It can enlightenus. It can tell us about ourselves. A song can beinterpreted in a way that the artist takes possessionof its soul. She makes the song her own and opens upa whole new world to the listener, a world far beyondthe original.I bring you Canto, which means both Song and I Sing, ata time when I am moving far beyond my original world.I am redening myself as a musician, as a singer, as asongwriter. As I do this, I have been helped by thecarefully chosen songs of Canto. Hours and days ofsearching, exploring listening, learning brought me tothe new but old world of these songs.Songs of a time past and of a time present. Songs bysome grand Maestri of the Cantautori (singer/songwriter)tradition. Songs by maestri in the making. Songs whichhonour a past, a tradition, but which also look to thefuture. Songs of Italy and its diaspora. Songs of NOW.Canto is not an exercise in nostalgia. It is meant toshow how transcendent a great song can be despitetimelines and language. Jovanotti to me is the consummate pop artist. Thoughtful, prolific writer, energetic entertainer and mindful of his place in this business of music. Translating his lyrics for “Punto” into English demonstrate just how this artist’s talents transcends all language and culture boundaries, showing us just what kind of timeless masterpiece he had created.

Giovanni telegrafista e nulla più, stazioncina povera c’erano piu’ alberi e uccelli che persone ma aveva il cuore urgente anche senza nessuna promozione battendo, battendo su un tasto solo. Elittico da buon telegrafista, tagliando fiori, preposizioni per accorciar parole, per essere piu’ breve , nella necessita’, nella necessita’. Conobbe Alba, un Alba poco alba, neppure mattiniera, anzi mulatta che un giorno fuggi unico giorno in cui fu mattutina per andare abitare citta’ grande piena luci gioielli. Storia viva e urgente. Ah, inutili tanto alfabeto morse in mano Giovanni telegrafista, cercare cercare Alba ogni luogo provvisto telegrafo. Ah, quando l’invecchia cum est morosa urgenza Giovanni telegrafista e nulla piu’... urgente. Per le sue mani passo mondo, mondo che lo rese urgente, Crittografico, rapido, cifrato, passo’ prezzo caffe’ passo’ matrimonio Edoardo ottavo oggi duca di Windsor, passarono cavallette in Cina, passo’ sensazione di una bomba volante, passarono molte cose ma tra l’altro passo notizia matrimonio Alba con altro. Giovanni telegrafista, quello dal cuore urgente, non disse parola, solo le rondini nere senza la minima intenzione simbolica, si fermarono sul singhiozzo telegrafico Alba e’ urgente.

Enzo Jannacci was one of Italy’s most important artists, a unique interpreter and writer in the cabaret tradition. Ironic, surreal yet full of emotion, Giovanni Telegrafista is a heart breaking Coen brothers like lament of Giovanni, a telegrapher and his solitary pursuit for his love, Alba.

Ornella Vanoni had collaborated with many writers over her career, from the great Italian writers to the Brazilians Vinicius DeMoraes and Toquinho. Together, the 3 of them put out an album in the 70’s called “La Voglia, La Pazzia, L’Incoscienza, L’Allegria” where La Vanoni selected some tracks written by DeMoraes and Toquinho, then translated them into Italian.

Caterina Valente is a powerhouse in the Italian popular music scene. Singer, musician, songwriter, she has performed and recorded in many languages including German, Portuguese, French, English and of course Italian. This song Tout L’Amour was recorded and performed by her. It is one of those rare gems that when you find it, you want to share it with the world.

There was much controversy around the death of film director Pier Paolo Pasolini. He was outspoken when it came to his political views and his lifestyle choices. DeAndre and Bubola were commissioned by RAI to write a piece about the mystery as to how and why Pasolini died. Was he murdered due to a crime of passion? Was it a “hit”? Was he framed? An uncommon talent who led an uncommon life and left such an uncommonly powerful legacy. It is a fascinating story which needed to be told - in English. The DeAndre Foundation have approved our version of this translation, stating it is profound, moving and does a tremendous amount of respect to DeAndre, to Bubola and to the memory of Pasolini.

Listening to Samuele Bersani sing this, you can’t help but be drawn in by the mesmerizing rhythm of the lyrics, expressing the cerebral machinations of someone who is trying to forget about a love which has fallen apart but he just can’t. And he goes over it and over it around and around in his mind to justify, to convince himself that it’s done - but it’s not. He’s in his web of thoughts, the only place where perhaps he feels safe….but not for long.

What originally brought me to work with my producer Antonio Fresa was the work of cantautore Joe Barbieri. His works are so romantic, with a hint of an old world charm rooted in the modern world. I wanted to do a song of Joe’s and he chose this one for me.

Music of course was a big force in Italian Cinema. The greats as Fellini had Nino Rota or even the great works of Ennio Morricone. Film and music go hand and hand. I felt it was necessary to pay homage to the marriage of film and music with this gorgeous tune, written by the composer for “La Vita e’ Bella”, Nicola Piovani, with english lyrics by Israeli artist Noa. This is our nod to the contemporary genius, Roberto Benigni.

Tony Bungaro is one of the rising songwriting stars in Italy. He chose this song for me which was originally sung by him in Italian but we decided to translate the lyrics into french.

This whole journey with CANTO has been to celebrate the cantautore tradition. The great voices of a time passed as well, the great voices of a time present. Being a songwriter myself, I took great motivation and inspiration from all the melodies and songs I immersed myself in, in order to find my interpretive voice but I also wanted to lend another voice - the voice of writer. This amourous lament began with the beautiful poetry of dear friend and poet Gianna Patriarca. Then as a team, both here and in Naples, we created this piece which speaks of an unforgettable love.
