What's inside this issue:
A Word From Our New PresidentI’d like to introduce myself: my name is Sally Wenzel and I am
your new CA/NV Conference UMW President. I’m so grateful to
be a part of this wonderful organization with all of you.
Here’s a little bit about my church life: I am a member of
Campbell UMC in Campbell, CA where I am the local UMW
President, a member of the Chancel Choir and of the Carillon Bell
Choir. I am also a member a few committees.
My husband and I own a small machine shop located in
Fremont. We have 3 adult children and 2 grand puppies!
Already this year I have been able to attend 2 of the district officer
training/meet & greet events and have met some of you. Still to
come this year are more training events, spiritual retreats, the
Western Jurisdiction Event, Calling u, in Tempe, AZ, the Social
Action event in April, CA/NV Annual Conference and the UMW
Breakfast in June, Mission u events this summer and our Annual
Celebration in October.
See you around the Conference!

"Help us to remember thosewho are in prison Locked up,separated, and marginalized.Help us to break the chains of
injustice That criminalizepersons of color And keepchildren from living their
fullest lives."Dr. Jessie Smith
It's 2020 – a new decade, an opportunity to try
new things while many of the same issues
remain to be addressed, for instance the ‘cradle
to prison pipeline’. Your Social Action team (the
Mission Coordinators for Social Action in each
district and the conference), are seizing the
opportunity to change things around a bit while
continuing to focus on ‘interrupting the cradle
to prison pipeline’.
Our Social Action event will be held at the
Sacramento Japanese UMC on Saturday, April
25th. The program will begin at 10:00 am and
will conclude about 3:45 pm. We will have Bible
study in the morning followed by keynote
speaker, Jessica Nowlan, Executive Director
Young Women’s Freedom Center. After lunch
we will have two workshop sessions. We are
inviting all people (men, women and youth)
interested in this topic to come – and we have
scholarships for people of all ages.
Workshops will include the following:
- Replacing zero tolerance policies in our
schools with
restorative practices
- Mass incarceration and supporting the
families
of incarcerated people
- The criminalization of girls of color
- Establishing a parallel school board in your
school district to ensure all students are
learning in a hospitable environment
Workshops will focus not only on educating but
also equipping for action – so that we can all do
something when we return home to make a
difference and interrupt the ‘cradle to prison
pipeline’. Click here for the flyer and here for
the scholarship information; the forms are also
in this newsletter. We look forward to
partnering with you in this important work.

Greetings Sisters,
I am very excited to start a new year. My first
year as your Conference Treasurer was
definitely a learning experience. There have
been a few changes in the way we remit
payments to the United Methodist Women
National Office. They have asked the treasurers
to send our payments for Legacy Fund and
UMCOR directly to them instead of using the
normal channels of the remittance form. The
reason for this change is to get the money to
them as quickly as possible. You may still
include these donations on your remittance to
your district treasurer, but you can also send
your donations directly to an UMCOR
advance. The easiest way to donate to the
Legacy Fund is to do it directly on the
www.UnitedMethodistWomen.org website using
a credit card. If you choose to send your
donations to your District Treasurer, she will
still pass your donation through to the
appropriate agency.
I hope to see many of you at District and
Conference events this year. There are some
wonderful events being planned for you. If you
have any questions about Mission Giving, please
contact me or your District Treasurer.

My name is Betty Holmes and I am finishing the
term of President of the Great Northern District
for Stephanie McMillian who had to resign due
to ill health. I come from a long line of
Methodists but didn't join my local UMW unit
until I retired to Ellensburg, Washington, in
1995. We moved to Carson City, Nevada, in
2016. I have been an active UMW member in
both places. I have served as the GND Spiritual
Growth Coordinator for 3 years and have now
moved over to the President's chair.
I just want to announce that we are holding our
Spiritual Growth Retreat at the Mercy Retreat
Center in Auburn, CA, July 31, August 1, and 2.
Our GND Annual Celebration will be in held in
Redding on September 26th. I hope some of
you will be able to join us.

You may be asking why and how do we give our input?
The How: Fill out the National United Methodist Women’s 2019 Census.
The Why: By answering the census questions you are giving National UMW information that they
can use to plan resources for all UMW units.
Filling out the Census is pretty easy:
Go to www.unitedmethodistwomen.org/census2019
Fill in your church’s zip code on the first line and your church’s name, District, and Conference
will come up and you click on it. (It is important to use the church’s zip code, not name or
address)
You are ready to answer the rest of the questions. When you finish hit submit and if you have
filled everything out you will get a ‘You Have Completed the Census message’.
Thank you for filling the census out, and if you have any questions or need help, please contact
your district Membership, Nurture & Outreach officer or myself, Maybelle Henry, Conference
MN&O.

People of faith and conscience have been working tirelessly to protect clean car standards, and
once again we need to use our voices on this important climate and health issue.
PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION TO TOYOTA, GENERAL MOTORS, AND FIAT CHRYSLER
THAT IPL WILL TAKE TO AUTO SHOWS AND PRESENT TO THE MEDIA IN THE
COMING MONTHS.
Last year, Toyota, General Motors, Fiat Chrysler and other automakers announced that they
would side with the Trump administration's efforts to gut the Clean Car Standards AND revoke
the authority of California and other states to set clean vehicle standards and protect public
health.
The transportation sector is the largest source of global warming pollution in the U.S. and a
major contributor to smog. When we need to be working toward eliminating climate pollution
from automobiles, these automakers are trying to put clean cars in reverse. This is absolutely
unacceptable, but unless we start speaking up, it will happen.
As one important step in speaking up, IPL drafted a petition to the automakers. Now we need
more people of faith and conscience to sign on to demonstrate public support and the moral
call to continue building more fuel efficient, safe, clean cars.
CLICK HERE TO TELL TOYOTA, GENERAL MOTORS, AND FIAT CHRYSLER TO
SUPPORT CLEAN CAR STANDARDS.
We know that auto companies are susceptible to public pressure, so let's make sure the
companies hear from us. Like their past resistance to installing seat belts and catalytic
converters, this refusal to build more efficient vehicles will be a shameful mark on these
companies' history. The clean cars rollback is an immoral decision to put profits and politics
over people and the health of our planet.
PLEASE JOIN US IN TELLING TOYOTA, GENERAL MOTORS, AND FIAT CHYRSLER TO
DO THE RIGHT THING.
