WELCOME TO LIONISTIC YEAR 2020 – 2021

Well, this is surely a very different environment we are in now aren’t we? With a pandemic continuing to swirl around us for a few months, we have no clue how this year will go but we sure will give it a good try to continue to do the work that Lions do. And with all of this, we start out fresh with redistricting from three districts to two districts. Let’s find out a bit about the team this year.

THE ELECTRONIC DIRECTORY IS COMING YOUR WAY!

The 2019 - 2020 Council of Governors has approved preparing an electronic directory. Therefore, Multiple District 21 (MD 21) is discontinuing the use of printed directories. The 2020 - 2021 electronic directory: • Will be located in a secure area of our MD 21 website that our Lions will be authorized to login to

and access. To satisfy privacy and security requirements, this area will be password protected and only available to our MD 21 Lions. Please Note: Individual Lions accessing the documents would be responsible for safeguarding the information and ensuring it is NOT USED for personal or non-Lion purposes AND is not released to anyone outside of our Multiple District. (Additionally, any printed directories you currently have or ones you elect to print out MUST be shredded…not disposed of in the trash or recycling bin.)

• Will be in a modular format that contains information in separate PDF files. the modular format will allow us to add information and documents as required. A PDF file ensures the information can be viewed by our Lions no matter which operating system, device or software application it’s viewed on. Additionally, a PDF document allows you to quickly search for information instead of having to thumb through a printed document to find what you’re looking for.

• Will contain several individual PDF documents. The first two (2) documents being prepared are:

o A “Multiple District 21 Club & Membership List” that will contain club information (divided into

their respective districts) along with an alphabetical listing of our Lions and their contact information.

o A “Who Ya Gonna Call” document that will contain contact information for our multiple district and district leadership, committee chairpersons and state and district projects.

A notification email will be sent to the leaders and club members when the electronic directory is available. The email will contain instructions for accessing the documents. Please send any questions or concerns to Lion Laurie Genz at (520) 266-1426 or email: [email protected]. WELCOME TO DISTRICT 21NORTH

I wholeheartedly welcome each and every one of you to our new District 21 North. The old 21 A, B, C districts are now history. The winds of change have blown. Now we settle down to do what Lions have always done – Serve! The keynote next year is “Arizona Lions”. You will be hearing much more about this concept in the next several months.

Plan to participate in the 21 North and South Joint Virtual Kick-off meeting August 1, 2020.

Retention – New clubs are important this year, with the goal of adding 200 more clubs to Lionism. Even more important is retaining our current Lions. We are going to lose some Lions at the club level, why? Are they unhappy? Afraid of crowds? Did we not keep them busy? Reach out to these Lions,

find out why they want to leave. A phone call goes a long way in retaining them. Let them know how much you appreciate them and how much the club will miss them.

Membership – A friend of mind recently told me that joining the Lions was a thing of beauty, truth, and meaning in his life. He also stated it was his duty to serve. It makes him feel worthwhile. No matter how you view being a Lion, it gives you direction and motivation in your life. We do feel much better about ourselves. When you “just ask” a friend to join, you are doing them a giant favor. You are adding meaning to their lives.

Our direction this year –All of our Pillars are important, including childhood cancer, diabetes, and vision. We will also focus on hunger, membership, and LCIF. What is more important than feeding the hungry. No one really knows how many citizens go to bed hungry. Support your clubs’ food drives and

your local food bank. They each publish a list of needed items. Visit a food bank on distribution day and just observe how busy they are. It will sadden your heart.

LCIF – Fred Gameson, Marie Cunning, and Rosemarie Gabriel are tasked in 2020/2021 with meeting very large contribution goals. They will visit your clubs, appealing for support. Help them succeed. LCIF is our foundation. It is one of the main reasons we exist. Talk to your board members regarding club contributions. We also need to contribute as individual Lions – whatever you can afford to give. Dig deep.

In closing this month, I ask you to turn energy into action. Do something for your club and the “Arizona Lions”.

Let me know what I can do for you!Chuck Matthews, District Governor21 North

What an exciting time to be a Lion in Arizona! Our communities are full of caring individuals eager to help their neighbors during this unprecedented turbulent time. Unfortunately, they often don’t know the best way to help. It is even more difficult for them to find others to work with as a team and accomplish greater good. Fortunately, most communities have a Lions club in or near their town. Lions clubs provide trained leaders, experienced caring volunteers, liability insurance, and most importantly, knowledge of the local community.

Lions were some of the very first people to start helping when COVID-19 began to cause sickness, isolate people, damage the economy, and disrupt delivery of supplies. Nearly every club in Arizona participated in the statewide (MD-21) effort to provide emergency funds to

local food banks. Several clubs have instituted calling trees to regularly check on the welfare of their own members. Books and laptops have been provided to students who are suddenly attending school remotely. Long-time Lions who have done little more than pay dues year after year are now stepping up to help wherever they can. I am impressed with the number of non-Lions I see now working side-by-side with us at service project throughout the district. Thank you for all your service!

Regarding this first year as District 21-S, please know that the district officers are here to serve you. We want to be a resource for you to help build your club into what you want it to be. I am not interested in coming up with new programs involving more paperwork. I have asked countless Lions why they joined our

organization. I have only received two answers: service and fellowship. Literally nothing else. As such, these are now our two district priorities. Increasing and retaining membership is a key to increasing service, so we will focus on membership as well. I am asking you to join the leadership team in serving Lions outside of your own club. If you would like to share your passion for a certain service activity with other district clubs, let me know so I can put you on the proper committee. Please let me know if you have skills you are willing to teach others.

Thank you for allowing me to serve in this new position. It is an honor to be one of you. AS Helen Keller said, “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.”

After years of financial struggle and sacrifice, LFA has finally turned the corner and is now in much better shape financially than it has been in 15 or 20 years. The land exchange has been completed. Our joint venture partner has been working hard to divest himself of some of the land he received in the exchange, which in turn, will allow him to pay LFA back on the note he owes. As we get paid we can and will pay back those to whom we owe not only money but our sincere gratitude. For those who helped by lending LFA the money needed to acquire the land that Camp Tatiyee occupies, we thank you.

SUN LAKES BREAKFAST LIONS FOUNDATION & CLUB

Dear Brother & Sister Lions:

News travels fast in this social media world, so most of you know that our President of the Sun Lakes Breakfast Lions Club, Rich Iovino passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Saturday, June 13th.

Some of you were also aware that my and Rich’s friendship goes back to another Lions Club. That one was the Patchogue, Long Island, New York club where Rich had sponsored me. So, after we both found ourselves here in the desert, I figured one good turn deserves another and sponsored him into our club.

Rich was a tech guy and had an extensive background in computers. Within very short order he had our club on the web and his skills were being recognized and utilized by Lions organizations at the

district and statewide levels. Rich was a great “partner” on the flag route and though it took a few times

(Remember, he did not live in Sun Lakes) we had one of the biggest routes down to one steady flow.

He was a good friend since high school. He had known my wife, Sister Lion Debra Curry since third grade. He was great fun to be around and we shared many interests.

Though we both were rabid baseball fans one of our few clashes was his love of the New York Yankees whereas, I bleed the orange and blue of the Mets. On our flag route, over a meal or just sitting around we’d quiz each other on musical, sports or high school trivia and we usually ended in a tie.

His heart was in volunteering and Lions was in his blood. I will miss his work as a Lion, but most of all I will miss his friendship.

The Sun Lakes Breakfast Lions Club extends our deepest sympathy to his wife Carol and his family.

~ Brian Curry First Vice President, SLBLC
