Project Title Heysham Operational Tripping (under Light Current Work Framework)
Client
National Grid
Detailed Description of the Project
The Heysham Operation Tripping Scheme (OTS) identifies the current and future need for
additional generation sources to be incorporated into the Transmission System, in the North
West 1 and North West 2 regions.
The OTS enabling project being carried by Morson Projects and National Grid will integrate
these generation fields with the existing supplies and create and robust network. The
intertrip will automatically trip a breaker that removes a generator from the Transmission
System when it receives a specific signal. The signal is delivered when a predetermined fault
on a specific part of the transmission system occurs. The requirement for an intertrip is
usually identified at the time of connection of a generator and is specified within the
Bilateral Connection that is agreed between National Grid and the Generator for that
connection.
Morson Projects responsibilities are to assist National Grid in the enabling works for the
Operational Tripping Scheme, by carrying out site surveys to identify the feasibility of using
current primary assets on thirty circuits across sixteen sites. Once these surveys have been
carried out Morson Projects are to provide design intent documents and engineering design
packages.
Morson Projects Installation & Commissioning department are supplying all build
requirements along with the installation and commissioning required supported by their
own TP144 site management and TP141 commissioning team.
The new Heysham OTS scheme is due to go into operation in October 2015.

Project Title Mechanically Switching Capacitator Bank Protection Upgrade (under Light Current Work Framework)
Client
National Grid
Detailed Description of the Project
Many of the capacitor banks installed in the early 1990s
utilised a capacitor out of balance protection relay produced by
GEC, Type DTCB 11.
There is a potential risk that to leave the existing relays in
service may result in their failure, as a number have done
already. This would leave the equipment unprotected and out of service.
Therefore, a modern replacement protection relay is required to give reliable operational
capacity.
Morson Projects have been awarded the project from National Grid to upgrade the out of
balance protection on Mechanically Switched Capacitor Banks at a number of substations in
the Midlands and South.
To upgrade the current MSC protection, Morson Projects responsibilities are to by carrying
out site surveys, identify the extent of any new design or installation works, supply a fully
compliant type registered solution to UKBP/TP 183, complete with design and setting design
assurance carried out in house.
Once these stages are met 20 protection schemes will be designed and manufactured in
house in Morson Projects workshop, these will then undergo a full National Grid Factory
Acceptance Test (FAT) by the client prior to leaving for site.
All interface design works and design assurance will be carried out by a Morson Projects’
dedicated Power Engineering Team.
Morson Projects Installation & Commissioning department are supplying all installation and
commissioning required supported by their own TP144 Site Management and TP141
Commissioning Team.

Project Title ENWL CLASS (Customer Load Active Systems Services)
Client
Electricity North West/Siemens
Detailed Description of the Project
The aim of CLASS is to increase the capacity of the electricity distribution network by using
innovative dynamic voltage control. It’s a low-cost solution which will create a number of
advantages for customers. It can be deployed on a national level and it will make it easier to
adopt low carbon technologies onto the electricity network such as wind and solar power.
The CLASS AVC Trial project being carried by Morson Projects, Siemens and ENWL will
integrate a Smart Grid controller into 60 trail sites within ENWL’s North West region. This
smart grid controller coupled to new auto voltage control systems and remote telemetry
connections will enable each substation to be monitored and enable tap staggering
techniques for the provision of reactive power services (i.e. voltage regulation / cost saving).
Morson Projects responsibilities were to survey all 60 sites to identify the extent of
additional design and install required. Once the surveys were undertook Morson Projects
carried out a full electrical / mechanical interfacing design package for the new substation
and transformer tap controllers.
Morson Projects installation & commissioning department supplied all build requirements
along with the installation and commissioning required, supported by their own site
management and commissioning team.
Project Title Design Consultancy Services Framework
Client
Electricity North West
Detailed Description of the Project

strong relationship. Morson Projects has a dedicated skilled team carrying out the work to
ENWL standards and are all H100 authorised.
Project Title Secondary Design Services Framework
Client
Western Power Distribution
Detailed Description of the Project
Morson Projects is currently within a Framework for secondary design services for Western Power Distribution from 11 to 132kV work includes the following:
Upfront protection/control system design and schematics,
Wiring diagrams,
General arrangements
Cabling interface drawings
Design & manufacture of control and protection cubicles / panels.
Project Title McNeill (Back to Back) HVDC Convertor Station
Client
Alstom PES
Detailed Description of the Project
McNeill HVDC Back-to-back station is an HVDC back-to-back station, which is used for the
interconnection of the power grids of the Canadian provinces Alberta and Saskatchewan
and went in service in 1989. McNeill HVDC back-to-back station can transfer a maximum
power of 150 MW at a voltage of 42 kV. The station, which was built by Alstom, is unique as
no smoothing reactor is required. The thyristor valves of the station are cooled by an
aqueous ethylene/glycol solution, which does not freeze at temperature of -50°C.
In February 2012 Alstom Grid’s PES division was awarded the project to complete a full
control system refurbishment along with upgrading the current Mimic interface point being
updated to a PC based SCADA system.
Morson Projects responsibilities were to assist Alstom Grid in the overall control system
interfacing along with site installation & commissioning support.
www.morson.com Doc Ref: CAP-002 P a g e | 16
This included development of schematics, wiring diagrams, cables etc. to complete the
control and protection throughout the new works.
Project Title St Asaph Reinforcement Protection & Control
Client
Scottish Power Energy Networks
Detailed Description of the Project
The installation of a new SuperGrid transformer by National Grid at St Asaph Grid and an
increase in demand triggered the requirement to reconfigure the operational running
arrangement of the 132kV system between Pentir and Connahs Quay Grid to ensure the
132kV system operates within the fault level capability of the requirement in that particular
network.
Upon the award on the contract Morson Projects were to then design, manufacture, FAT,
deliver to site and off-load the protection and control panels for St Asaph 132kV substation.
The panels were completed with small wiring, terminal boards,
labels, links & fuses and ancillary equipment detailed within the
specification including wiring diagrams. Bus Wiring and associated
terminal blocks shall be designed to accommodate addition and or
removal of future and existing panels. Where a Future Panel space is
allowed in the panel suite layout, any required bus wiring is to be
carried through to the next existing Panel by means of multicores.
