Our servicesWe provide: HV System Design

Our clients rely on us for high value design solutions including: high voltage distribution substations, high and low voltage overhead power lines, underground power systems and cabling, earthing systems, fibre optic systems, street lighting, SCADA, power system modelling, protection studies and settings.

Project Delivery and Construction

We deliver full turnkey solutions for our clients, from design, construction and testing through to commissioning. Our qualified project managers and site supervisors are experienced in managing scope, project scheduling, cost estimating, resource planning, managing risk, and stakeholder communications.

Testing and Commissioning

We provide our clients with the widest range of HV power system asset testing and commissioning services including: motors and generators, current transformers, voltage transformers, power transformers, transmission lines, switchgear, earthing systems, protection and control relays, SCADA, as well as gas leak detection, thermographic imaging, partial discharge testing and more.

Condition Monitoring and Asset Maintenance

Megavar has been involved in many interesting projects that demonstrate our extensive experience in high voltage infrastructure.

HV System DesignAurora Energy – Aurora Energy contracted Megavar to undertake design, documentation and specification for a Consac cable replacement project in the suburb of Bridgewater. As well as design, the project included preparing pre-tender estimates for replacement of approximately 450 metres of cable. Megavar liaised with Council on behalf of the client, conducted the assessment of customer mains, and completed designs for new cable and street furniture installation. We provided Microstation drawings, WASP estimates and work orders to enable the project to be tendered.

Hobart International Airport – This project, completed during 2013, comprised design, documentation and specification for relocation of overhead assets and installation of underground cabling. Megavar provided design drawings and prepared specifications to include in a tender process, plus pre-tender cost estimates for removal of pole, relocation of 500 kVA transformer, relocation and renewal of HV pole and stay, installation of underground HV and LV cabling and cabinets to supply existing and proposed developments, and replacement of existing overhead 11 kV line with underground HV cable through the new car park development. As well

What we’ve achieved

as design drawings in hard copy and CAD format, we ensured the final design was incorporated into the CAD drawing for entire airport and the private network drawings were updated for our client to provide to Aurora Energy.

Project Delivery and ConstructionMorwell East Open Cut Substation – As principal contractor to SP Ausnet Megavar took on overall responsibility for delivery of the Morwell East Open Cut Substation Upgrade project. Megavar Project managed the replacement of a 6.6 kV switchboard with a new standard design demountable substation and replaced existing 6.6kV protection in the old building. The works also included new RTU and HMI, transformer and feeder underground cabling, switchyard lighting , transformer surge arrestors, earth grid extension, civil works associated with switch room, and decommissioning existing panels.

Boyer Paper Mill – This project for Norske Skog (Australasia) comprised design, construct, test and commission. The works included installing a 6.6kV switchboard, protection relay and CT settings, 2MVA transformers, feeder cables and ladders, earthing and fire proofing, 110V DC supply, trip interface control signals, testing and commissioning. Client feedback was extremely positive; “we have certainly

been impressed by Megavar’s professionalism and poise. We value the work you’ve done, as your team’s super efforts ensured we could start commissioning in time in spite of the many obstacles we faced during the construction phase.”

Kingston Substation – Megavar worked with Alstom on the Kingston Sub Station up-grade for Transend Networks. This project delivered a new 33kV control building housing Siemens Switchgear, the existing line protection panels were replaced, SCADA integration of all equipment along with two new 110/33kV ABB transformers, 2 new station services transformers, New A and B solid bus along with a new bus coupler. Five new circuit breakers and two sets of voltage transformers were installed. The entire project was undertaken under brown field conditions and short return to service timeframes were adhered to at all times. This was a construct and commission project for Megavar and the benefits of this were highlighted as all milestones were met and the synergies between our testers and fitters ensured that there were no delays during the commissioning process.

Knights Rd Substation – Megavar worked with Powercor Network Services to re-build the Knights Rd substation as part of the Southern security upgrade for Transend. Multiple substations have been involved during the works. Knights Rd being a brown field site, has involved some complex staging & planning in

order to keep supply up to customers due to the strict return to service requirements and short outage timeframes.

Gordon Power Station – Megavar is working with Hydro Tasmania to deliver part of their statewide circuit breaker replacement program. Gordon power station circuit breaker A52 was removed and replaced with a new 220kV ABB unit. Megavar also managed the civil component of this work providing Hydro Tasmania with one point of contact for the project delivery.

BHP Billiton Temco plant – contracted Megavar to replace the 22 kV cables at the Bell Bay plant involving 1000 meter runs of cable installed on overhead gantry.

JB Swift, Longford Meats – Megavar changed over a transformer and relocated another as part of a high voltage upgrade at the JB Swift Longford meatworks for SJ Electrics.

Tungatinah Substation – Megavar was happy to be awarded the electrical installation contract to carry out the primary and secondary construction works on behalf of the principal contractor Powercor Network Services. The project to redevelop the 22kv switchyard located at Tungatinah, a Transend Networks asset saw Megavar carrying out installation works associated with the new Siemens 22kV indoor switchgear that is housed in the new substation building. Megavar was also responsible for carrying out all other major electrical works with this project. This included earthing systems, AC and DC installation, protection panels as well as fibre optic installation. Megavar is proud of the fact that no workplace safety incidents have been recorded during the course of this project.

Testing and CommissioningCheriton Ave Substation – Megavar provided testing and commissioning services to the Endeavour Energy Cheriton substation in Sydney for CLM Infrastructure (Zinfra). This significant project involved having the Megavar crew certified onto the Endeavour Energy Network as well as performing the testing and commissioning activity for the site. The project was delivered without incident and to the client’s satisfaction.

George Town Substation – Megavar was employed by Transend Networks for testing and commissioning services relating to the installation of two 200MVA 220:110kV auto transformers at the Georgetown substation. Testing included site acceptance testing and integration of all newly installed primary and secondary equipment. Concurrently Megavar was employed directly by the supplier of the new auto transformers to conduct a full suite of site acceptance tests on their behalf.

Derby Substation – Megavar was contracted to perform testing and commissioning works for the upgrade of the Derby substation, which included a new transmission line bay and an upgrade in capacity of the 110kV/22kV power transformer. We performed primary and secondary testing for all of the new equipment and protection systems, including integration into the existing substation infrastructure and the broader transmission networks.

The project was established to provide a connection point for the new 200MW wind farm development in Tasmania’s far North East, for which the testing scope was

extended to include a new anti-islanding scheme and runback control mechanism, incorporating coordination of measurement and control across four different substations and the central network operations centre.

Megavar worked alongside technicians and engineers from several companies to ensure that the complex nature of the scheme’s design was implemented correctly and successfully. The wind farm commenced generating load into the transmission network in March 2013.

Burnie Substation – Megavar was engaged by Zinfra to perform isolation of existing equipment, Factory Acceptance Testing, Site Acceptance Testing and integration with existing equipment, and commissioning associated with the 110kV system upgrade at Transend Networks Burnie substation.

During FAT Megavar engineers performed secondary injection testing of new protection panels proving correct application of relay settings and operating characteristics, operation of logic as well as proving internal panel wiring had been installed correctly and two discreet protection and tripping circuits existed.

SAT consisted of verification of current transformers and voltage transformer against nameplate values, confirming new dead tank circuit breakers operated within manufacturer’s specifications and performing high voltage withstand testing to prove the equipment was suitable to be energised from the system. Commissioning of the new apparatus included service voltage and stability checks to ensure all equipment was operating correctly.

Newton Substation – Megavar worked again with Zinfra under a similar arrangement to the Burnie substation 110kV upgrade to perform FAT, SAT and commissioning of the redeveloped Transend Networks Newton substation. In addition to testing and commissioning the 110kV transmission line bay apparatus Megavar engineers also tested and commissioned a new 110kV Bus Section, a 1 10kV / 22kV and 110kV / 11kV power transformers. Commissioning of the new 110kV / 22kV power transformer and associated protection devices was performed under quite demanding circumstances with only a 6 hour window permitted to perform all required checks and testing as the only connection to the 22kV system was the adjacent mine site which could not be off line any longer than this time frame. Megavar engineers were able to perform all commissioning works in this time frame and restore supply to the mine without delay.

BHP Billiton Macedon – Megavar was subcontracted to perform configuration of protection relay settings, application of settings and secondary injection testing of 5 gas turbine protection relays, 2 diesel generator protection relays and 2 feeder protection relays at BHP Billiton Petroleum Macedon gas plant. The generator protection relays were Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories SEL – 700G and the feeder protection relays were SEL – 751A. Megavar was provided a window of only 4 days in which to perform all setting development, setting application and relay injection testing. Megavar was able to perform all works required within the specified time frame including resolution of several setting issues

between the supplied settings documents and the parameters available within the relays.

Aurora Zone Substations – Megavar has been employed as the preferred provider for the distribution authority in Tasmania to conduct online partial discharge monitoring services. Where areas of elevated PD are noted further offline and monitoring techniques are utilized to pinpoint the cause of the discharge.

Palmerston Substation – Megavar was employed by Jemena Asset Management to conduct lead primary and secondary testing and commissioning services at Transend Networks owned Palmerston substation. Works included the replacement and subsequent commission services of multiple 110kV transmission line schemes. The project also incorporates upgrade works at the remote ends of some of the circuit completed in June 2012.

Mowbray Substation – Megavar was employed by Jemena to conduct primary and secondary testing and commissioning services for the 110kV substation upgrade at the Mowbray substation. The works included the installation of a new transmission line bay, transformer bay, 110kV buscoupler and four 22kV feeders. Secondary protection devices included Siemens and Schweitzer relays for the main transmission, distribution and transformer protection and GE multilin products.

SA Power Networks – Megavar is providing specialist testing and commissioning resources to SA Power Networks as they undertake a substantial upgrade of the South Australian electricity infrastructure.

Adelaide City West Project – A team of Megavar testers and commissioning engineers undertook finalisation work for Alstom Grid Australia on this substantial project.

Condition Monitoring and Asset MaintenanceMegavar has developed relationships over many years with large scale asset owners by performing regular asset inspection, testing and maintenance services all designed to maximise the life cycle and risk profile of assets in service. By developing a comprehensive understanding of the assets and systems in which they operate we have been able to provide preventative programs and solutions.

Megavar has maintenance and upgrade programs in place with:

Transend Networks, Aurora Energy, CitiPower / Powercor, SP Ausnet, Tamar Valley Power Station, SAPower Networks, Hydro Tasmania and SP Ausnet. We also provide maintenance programs for a large number of heavy industrial and private asset owners, for example: BHP Billiton, MMG Limited, JBS Australia , Mondelez Australia, Fonterra Australia, Rio Tinto, Vestas, ABB Australia, Schneider, Siemens, Barrick Gold Corporation, Wilson Transformer Company, GDF Suez Australian Energy, Toyota, Alstom Power.

All employees and sub-contractors are fully engaged in the system and are made aware of their responsibilities through company and project inductions, toolbox meetings, Safe Work Method Statements and / or Job Safety and Environment Assessments.

Safety audits are conducted at site level.

Megavar is presently working to gain certification to Australian Standard AS/NZS 4801:2001.

Independent third party audits are conducted across our system and structured internal quality audits are performed to ensure ongoing compliance and continuous improvement to our systems and procedures.

We’re working towards registration as an ISO9001 quality certified company with SAI Global.

Management systems and policies

Environmental management Megavar understands the potential damage when working on company facilities and project locations and the detrimental impacts affecting the local environment and communities.

Our project planning specifically identifies potential impacts, risks and compliance requirements as they relate to the project and ensures appropriate actions are implemented to achieve zero incidences and to ensure full compliance. Megavar is presently working to gain certification ISO14001.
