Notifiable data breaches

For customers, the impact of a data breach is almost always irreconcilable. Based on a survey by the Australian Community Attitude to Privacy Survey (ACAPS) , conducted by the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC), 58% of consumers said they would not deal with a business due to privacy or security concerns associated with data loss.

The country’s first data breach notification law (dubbed the Notifiable Data Breach (NDB) scheme) came into effect on February 22, 2018. Under the new law, officially known as the Privacy Amendment (Notifiable Data Breaches) Act 2017, any government agency, organisation or business with an annual turnover of $3 million or more, in Australia that is covered by the Australian Privacy Act (1998) is obliged to notify individuals whose personal information is involved in a data breach, as soon as practicable after becoming aware of a breach.

Remote Area Digital Communication System

XCy design and manufacture the Remote Area Digital Communication System (RADiCS) to extend high speed data to clients operating in remote locations. The RADiCS is ideal for mining companies, research facilities, cattle stations or other clients needing reliable high speed remote communication.

The RADiCS will interface to the public telecommunication system (e.g. mobile 4G or NBN networks) providing access to cost effective data plans and speeds of up to 100Mbps. The RADiCS can extend communications to remote sites several hundred kilometres from the telecommunications network. RADiCS can also provide a Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) voice network to the area surrounding each RADiCS installation, providing enhanced communication and safety for remote workers.RADiCS is designed and manufactured in Australia from high quality materialsand utilise equipment from leading radio system suppliers. Cost-effective Wide Area Network implementation linking multiple remote sites

THE CHALLENGE: Poseidon Nickel maintains mining operations at three remote sites in WA and required cost-effective communications to all sites from their head office located in Perth. Each remote site has limited or no available terrestrial communications carrier infrastructure.

THE SOLUTION: All three remote operations were linked into Poseidon Nickel’s corporate I.T. systems with a Wide Area Network provided using a combination of service providers, carriers and technologies as available. These include a dedicated SCPC Satellite System into the terrestrial ‘black hole’ at Lake Johnston, Telstra microwave services at Windarra and Black Swan, and WAN communications optimisation provided by Riverbed appliances. The use of the services already available at each site, and integration of disparate communications services across the entire network provides Poseidon Nickel with the most cost-effective solution available. XCy continues to manage and maintain the Poseidon network and is actively involved in the planning and design for enhancements to the network as Poseidon’s operational requirements evolve.

Full IT & Communications Services Solution for Remote Agri-Mining Operation

THE CHALLENGE: Kalium’s Beyondie Lakes Sulphate of Potash mine site is spread over a large geographical area on the edge of the Little Sandy Desert with no available communications infrastructure (apart from available satellite services).  Kalium needed communications system with network services including wireless LAN at all pump and bore sites and a 2-way radio system with cover over the entire operational area. The system also needed to be upgradable and accommodate a much higher capacity of services and dataflow as the mine develops into operation.

THE SOLUTION: XCy designed and installed a 2-hop microwave system covering 80km of rough and remote terrain to link the Beyondie site into Telstra’s network.  Each repeater site includes a communications tower and a weather-proof shelter and is self-contained with battery-backed solar power and 24/7 remote monitoring.  Each tower site includes a repeater for a digital mobile radio (DMR) 2-way radio system with effective voice communications provided to vehicles up to 50km from either repeater.  Radios were also programmed and provided for personal use and fitted to site vehicles. 

In addition, a mesh of communications links has been provided to link Wireless Access Points provides at each bore and pump site – so personnel have full access to all Internet services to maintain effective communications for safety and operational needs when in-field. All system components are rated for industrial application with high resilience to environmental extremes.

THE CHALLENGE: Your data is important for your business. For many businesses data is critical to their day-to-day operations, or a significant part of their business value exists in their data. So it is important for any business that data confidentiality, accessibility and integrity is maintained.

The ultimate protection for data is backups. Backups are a safe fall-back so you can recover data which has gone missing, been corrupted or becomes inaccessible. In more extreme cases of data loss, such as hacking, viral attack or disgruntled employee, having good recent backups can be the difference between a temporary inconvenience and business collapse.

THE SOLUTION: There are multiple options for backup solutions using server, NAS, SAN or tape storage, and based either locally on-premises, off site at a 2nd remote site, or with cloud-based backup service providers.

XCy I.T. solutions has a suite of proven backup solutions which provide affordable and reliable backup services. The scope of the solution is scalable to provide the required site diversity, Recovery Time Objective (RTO), Recovery Point Objective (RPO) to meet your business continuity needs.

In its simplest form where a client has an on-premises server, a backup solution with use a local NAS and replicates data into a cloud-based backup service. The solution includes monitoring and exception reporting to ensure backups are true. XCy engineers have worked to improve the reliability of the services to regularly achieve 100% reliable backups.

Cloud-Based I.T. Services Integration

THE CHALLENGE: Delivery of I.T. services and support using desktop and client-server infrastructure has been the primary IT infrastructure model of most businesses for decades. This model has served well, but it has inherent limitations on scalability, accessibility, compatibility, licensing and ongoing maintenance requirements.

Typically desktop software such as MS Office and Server services such as Exchange are licenced individually, or may be part of other licence programs such as volume licensing. Either way, the licenses are a valuable business asset and need to be managed. In addition many licence models only provide a limited upgrade path requiring ongoing time and expense to manage. It is expensive to maintain well and can result in license compliance issues, version incompatibilities, and business changes being delayed or complicated by legacy systems and software.

THE SOLUTION: Cloud-based services such as Software as a Service (SaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) are provided as a service from data centres via the Internet to wherever you and your staff are located.
