Capay ValleyGardensSelf- Guided Tour
Established in 1998 in the lovely Lamb Valley by Larry and Lynn Rolston, there are many gardens on the farm. A redwood grove in the front of the house provides shade and a tranquil setting. Behind the barn is a formal rose garden with a fountain and patio that can be rented for weddings and other special events or dinners. Be sure to visit the new event center which includes a pond and dry creek. New for 2016: Join us for a rose-infused ice cream making workshop at 11am. Picnic spaces and refreshments will be available. Look for our special parking entrance.
There are so many gardens here at the farm it is difficult to chose which one to see first! Join us at the Full Belly Kitchen and the newly planted drought-wise gardens surrounding it. Tour the event space and kitchen facilities. Next, swing by the straw bale house which is encircled by a berm covered in drought tolerant and California native plants. Gravel paths around the house take you past beds of Yucca and other succulents as well as through plantings of Euphorbias and lavender. Stroll through the acres of cut flowers where you will see perennials and annuals in full bloom. The rose arbor garden boasts 15 year old perennial plantings of a delicious mix of shrubs and trees. Finally, don’t forget your picnic lunch to be enjoyed on the grassy lawn area surrounded by the newly planted brick berm. Farm fresh goodies, including strawberries and flowers, will be for sale. Returning in 2016: Farm Fresh Floral Design workshop at 2pm with the option to “Pick Your Own Bouquet.”
This 2 1/2 acre parcel is dedicated to homesteading in the spirit of self-sufficiency. Starting with an almost bare landscape in 2001, there are now over 20 varieties of fruit trees. Come roam the orchards of olives, walnuts, stone fruit and citrus surrounding the house. A deer-proof vegetable garden provides year-round produce; the hand-built greenhouse has produced mangoes, bananas, and Rumsey’s first tomatoes of the season. Native and drought tolerant species surround the property. New in 2016: Homesteading workshop at 3pm. Children’s leaf and flower printing all day.
Visit this working family-owned lavender farm, where lavender is grown in the French tradition. Established in 1997, there are plantings of different lavender cultivars and a Farm Shop where you can purchase lavender gifts – soap, lavender oils, dried lavender blossoms, bath salts, cooking lavender, pillows and other items. Bring a picnic and relax among the lavender plants. Lavender infused treats will be available. The first 20 visitors will receive a free lavender gift.
This small organic farm grows heirloom vegetables and has recently planted many kinds of fruit trees. Native plant hedgerows and Mediterranean shrubs and trees surround a grove of cottonwoods, a great place for a picnic. Watch birds around a pond and visit sheep in the orchard. Learn about building a straw bale house. Veggies will be for sale, as well as t-shirts silkscreened with original drawings of vegetables and farm animals. New in 2016: Join us at 12pm for a silk-screening workshop. Bring your own t-shirt or fabric.
Chamisa Ridge Nursery is a wholesale nursery featuring plants suited to the arid west and to non-irrigated gardens. Our unique species are not readily available in the nurserytrade and not often encountered in the landscape. Chamisa Ridge places and emphasis on western natives, including beneficial bird and insect plants for agricultural lands, public landscapes, and private gardens. These are not ordinary garden plants! Be sure to stop by to purchase a unique native plant and talk to the nursery operators.
Established in the Hungry Hollow area in 1984 by owners Jeff and Annie Main, this 20 acre organic farm grows flowers, herbs, fruits and is a source of beauty. Many flower garden plants came from Annie’s grandmother’s garden. Flowering trees and shrubs, native hedgerows and Australian Beefwood create borders, leaving central areas for vegetables, flowers and the stone fruit orchards. Bring your picnic and walk the paths to find the perfect spot for a family lunch. Sale items include plants, fresh flower bouquets, jams, jellies and dried fruit. Park along the road.
This family farm in the Capay Valley grows mostly walnuts and almonds. Started from scratch about 20 years ago, this farm is powered by solar and wind energy. Tucked in the middle of the orchards are the main farmhouse and gardens. See raised vegetable and garden beds, as well as annual and perennial flowers and shrubs. Mixed in with the flowers and trees are ponds, creeks, fountains, and waterfalls. Bring your picnic!
The gardens at Capay Oaks Farm feature drought tolerant plantings. Entering alongside the young olive orchard, please park behind it, and then walk down the drive, through the oaks and into the garden. The garden is filled with unusual plants collected from many corners of the world. It also serves as a demonstration garden and propagation source for our nursery, Chamisa Ridge Nursery.
