History

Samuel Mayo Nickerson and his wife Matilda built their Brewster summer residence on a bluff overlooking Cape Cod Bay in 1890. It included Fieldstone Hall, a carriage house, a 9-hole golf course, a stone tower used to generate electricity and private game preserve. The estate was occupied by their son Roland and his wife Addie. Socially and politically prominent, the Nickersons entertained frequently and lavishly. It was not uncommon for the social event of the year to be held at Fieldstone Hall. In 1906, Fieldstone Hall burned to the ground. Construction began a year later and the new Mansion was completed in 1912. It closely resembled an English country manor with an eclectic blend of Renaissance Revival and Gothic themes. One of the Mansion‘s most striking features is the intricately carved oak staircase leading to the second floor. In 1945, the Nickerson Mansion was sold to the La Salette religious order where it served as a seminary and college for men. In 1979, Corcoran Jennison purchased the Mansion, Carriage House and the 52-acre parcel to eventually develop what Resort Guests and Club Members now know as Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club. Today, the Mansion and Carriage House have been enhanced to befit their historic character; including period furnishings and appropriate finishes to newly restored wood. There is 21,000 square feet of function space throughout the resort, Cape Cod’s only Nicklaus Design Golf Course, three exquisite restaurants, 338 guest rooms, eleven tennis courts, private beach, and five pools. The Resort’s numerous amenities complement the Nickerson family’s inspiration to have the ability to entertain extravagantly, lead an active lifestyle or simply relax and enjoy the tranquil setting.

Arbor Movie Night: Join us for an outdoor, family-friendly movie at Arbor Pool as the sun sets and stretch out under the stars. Shark Bah will remain open until 9:00pm serving pool side food and drinks. Movie will begin at sunset.

Capture the Flag: Participants will be split into two teams and will race to see who can capture the other team’s flag first. But be careful, you don’t want to end up in jail!

Craft Days: Come and make some fun crafts to remember your stay at Ocean Edge. Be prepared for crafts that include cutting, gluing and painting. $5 per craft.

*Members: First craft is complimentary with valid member card; thereafter will be $5 per craft

Family Basketball: Compete against other teams and individuals in games of H-O-R-S-E and challenge shots.

Family B-I-N-G-O: Join us at Shark Bah located at the Arbor Pool for some BINGO fun. $2 per card and the winner walks away with half the pot!

Family Field Day: It’s a beautiful day for some good old fashion fun on The Mansion Front Lawn. We will have a variety of lawn games and relay races for your family’s enjoyment!

Family Kite Making: Spend your Monday morning flying a kite! Grab your family and head to The Mansion Front Lawn to assemble, decorate and fly your very own kite! $10 per kite.

Kids Night Out: Enjoy a dinner out while we entertain and feed the kids at the EdgeVenture Clubhouse. Program is designed for children ages 4 to 9 years, with age appropriate activities, movies and Xbox Kinect. For staffing reasons, reservations must be made by 7:00pm on the previous day. Please call 774-323-6009 to make a reservation. Meet at the Member Sports Club. Program hours are from 6:00pm-9:00pm. Fee $30 per child, $25 for second or more siblings. Price includes pizza for dinner. Please alert staff to any allergies upon making reservation.

Movies by Moonlight: Each Sunday at sunset, The Mansion Front Lawn becomes the perfect backdrop for your favorite classic movies. Popcorn is available for the kids; snacks and a bar for the adults. Blankets for seating will be provided, but feel free to bring your own chairs.

Friday Fun Night: Let your kids enjoy an obstacle course, designed by our golf pros on our putting green, while you enjoy a cocktail at Linx Tavern. Snacks and soft drinks are provided. 6:00pm – 7:30pm. $10 per child for Members and $15 for Resort or Sponsored Guests.

S’mores Family Beach Fire: Every Thursday night from 8:00pm-10:00pm, kick off your shoes, take in the sunset and make some friends and s’mores! Ocean Edge Shuttle will drop off at the Bay Pines Beach Path.

Splashtastic Games: Join us at Fletcher Pool for splashtastic activities including cannonball contest, pool kick board relay races, inner-tube water polo and other fun pool games!

Toddler Games: Assorted lawn games especially created for your toddlers on The Mansion Front Lawn.

Weekly Scavenger Hunt: Join us for our week-long scavenger hunt! Take pictures with your family performing the tasks given throughout your stay and upload them onto social media pages! The family with the highest score at the end of the week will receive a prize!

Croquet: Ocean Edge has a regulation croquet court located on the Mansion Front Lawn. Croquet will be set up to use at your leisure.

Beach Walk & Oyster Tour: The Brewster Flats are famous for their numerous tide pools and oyster beds. Explore them during our weekly beach walks. Please bring sunscreen and dress accordingly as you will be walking through ankle deep water. Beach shoes or sandals are highly recommended. Weekly times change with the low tide schedule. Nickerson Mansion Tour: The Nickerson Mansion Tour is offered June through September. Learn about The Mansion’s unique architecture and influence, and how the Nickerson family lived back in the day. Please contact the Front Desk for dates and times 774-323-6047.

Complimentary Golf Mixer: Whether you are new to the game or in need of a refresher, join one of our PGA Professionals Monday through Thursday at 4:15pm for a 45-minute golf lesson and mixer. Meet at the Linx Golf Pro Shop. Clubs are provided at no cost.

Family Golf: To encourage family golf in the afternoon starting at 4:00pm, we have placed family tees on the front nine of the course at 200 yards and 150 yards from the center of the green. These tee markers allow kids to play the hole from a reasonable distance to the green and make the putt for an actual score. Family Golf Rates: $75 per adult, junior players under the age of 13 are complimentary with playing adult.

What’s SUP? Stand Up Paddling (SUP) is back at Ocean Edge Bay Pines Beach. At high tide, our warm water and calm surf beach is the perfect location for SUP.

Meet up with fellow SUPers at the beautiful Bay Pines Beach and enjoy the sensation of walking on water. Listed below are the dates and times that SUP programs will be available at Ocean Edge. Biking

Take a spin on the Freedom Flyer Bike Fleet at Ocean Edge. Shiny and sharp, these brand new bikes are built for any kind of speed. Cover our resort’s legendary 429 acres, as well as the historic Cape Cod Bike & Rail Trail that crisscrosses our property and carries you from one quaint stop to another.

The Cape Cod Bike and Rail Trail is a 26-mile spectacular journey that begins in Dennis, continues through Ocean Edge Resort before ending on the Cape Cod National Seashore. The historic trail is a haven for bikers, walkers, joggers, and is dotted with plenty of opportunities to visit other beaches and ponds or to grab lunch or an ice cream cone.

Bike rentals are available at both Flyer for Hire rentals shops, which are located on The Mansion side adjacent to the Bay Pines tennis courts or on The Villages side next to Britterige Village. Bike rentals are available upon request and weather permitting in the off-season.

All rentals include helmets. Baby buggies and tandem bikes, which attach to the adult sized bikes, are available for our younger guests. The bike trail is safe for strollers as motor vehicles are not allowed. Remind kids to be aware of other riders and remember that Massachusetts law requires those under the age of 16 to wear a helmet.

We have two docks and observation decks available for use, the North Dock is located behind the 130 building in Britterige Village and the South Dock is located behind the Member Sports Club, near the playground area and Edge Venture Clubhouse.

Reservations for Kayaks and Stand-Up Paddle Boards are available through the Dock Attendant. Reservations can be made as far as five days out. Unfortunately, there is no direct line to the docks; individuals must be at the docks to make a reservation.

Bringing your own kayaks, paddle boards or other equipment for the pond is not permitted. Food or drinks are not permitted in the boats, on the docks, or on the pond. All food and drinks must remain on the observations decks overlooking the docks.

GOLF/TENNIS CONDITIONING: A 30 minute class that will target specific areas using weights and some resistance training. All levels welcome.

MVE CHAIR PILATES: The Pilates Chair equipment allows you to shape, tone, lengthen and align quite differently than the Mat. In short, the equipment works better and faster to change the body. Furthermore, additional advanced core work is available on equipment for the more accomplished practitioner. Last but not least, working on the equipment is fun! All levels welcome. ZUMBA: A cardio dance workout for all levels. Get a great workout and have fun doing it. Last 10 minutes of class will include a body toning segment.

STEP AND STRENGTH: A dynamic combination of step and weights to increase your cardio endurance and gain more strength in your core. All levels welcome.

SPINNING: A non-impact cardio workout. Great music and a lot of fun. Try it and you’ll be hooked! Please call 774-323-6300 to reserve a bike. WEIGHTS AND BALANCE: A strength weight workout with an added flair. All levels welcome. This is like personal training in a class room setting. No dance moves just body conditioning. All levels welcome.

FREEDOM TO CHANGE YOUR MIND WITH THE TIDE

BREWSTER BEACHES: IT’S WARMER HERE.Nicknamed by locals “the Brewster Flats”, our beautiful beaches were named #3 by Travel & Leisure in the America’s Most Beautiful Coastal Views category. Brewster beaches boast gentle surf, soft sand, warm water and a beach that changes dramatically every few hours. A common complaint about New England beaches is the cold water, but because Brewster is on an inlet and the bay, it is home to the Cape’s warmest water, due to the changing shoreline that stretches nearly a mile into the bay during low tide. At low tide the sun beats down on the sandbars, and as the tide rolls in, the water quickly heats up over the warm sand providing us with nature’s very own radiant heating system.

At low tide, the beach reveals tidal flats and smooth sand bars, great for power walking (sturdy enough for baby joggers), friendly pick-up wiffle ball games, and exploration including oyster farms. Low tide is a great time to relax and read, while kids get busy hunting for hermit crabs, minnows and other beach creatures found by the bucketful in the clean, warm water tide pools. At high tide, Brewster beaches change completely, boasting gentle surf and warm water, excellent for swimming and Stand Up Paddling. Very gradual elevation changes make an easy water entry and exit for little ones.

BAY PINES BEACHOnly Club Members with beach access and Resort Guests staying on the Mansion side of property will be admitted to Bay Pines Private Beach. Please have your Membership Card or Resort Card available for the beach attendant, as the admittance policy is strictly enforced.

Guests who do not have access to our Bay Pines Private Beach may purchase a Brewster Public Beach Pass for an additional $50 for the week from the Front Desk. This provides access to six Public Brewster beaches and two freshwater Brewster Ponds.

CAPE COD NATIONAL SEASHOREThe great ‘outer beach” of the Cape Cod National Seashore was described in great detail by Thoreau in the 1800s, and features forty miles of pristine sandy beaches, marshes, ponds, and uplands. Located on the ocean side of the lower Cape, the National Seashore stretches from Chatham to Provincetown and supports a host of diverse species.

A short drive from Ocean Edge Resort, the National Seashore makes for a great half day bike trip. There you will find cooler water, higher surf and gorgeous scenery featuring sand dunes, lighthouses, landscapes, and wild cranberry bogs. The National Seashore includes six swimming beaches, self-guided nature trails, picnic areas, and scenic overlooks. Some beaches (such as Marconi Beach) feature full bathhouses and changing areas.

The Great OutdoorsPick up the twenty-six mile Cape Cod Bike and Rail Trail at Ocean Edge and continue to the Cape Cod National Seashore all the way to Provincetown. The “rail trail” as it is known, is for bikers, walkers, and joggers. The Cape Cod Bike and Rail Trail is a 26-mile spectacular journey that begins in Dennis, through Ocean Edge in Brewster, and extends all the way to the National Seashore. The historic trail is a haven for bikers, walkers, and joggers, dotted with plenty of opportunities to visit other beaches and ponds, or to grab lunch or an ice cream cone. Bike rentals are available upon request and weather permitting in the off-season.

Just a three-minute bike ride from Ocean Edge is Nickerson State Park. A haven for campers, Nickerson offers paddle boat rentals and a chance to swim in some of the Cape’s most scenic ponds.

Cape Cod National Seashore Visitor’s Center (Eastham) Approximately 27,000 acres of picture-perfect uplands of undeveloped beaches, salt marshes, bike trails, kettle ponds, ocean, protected bays and forest. The Cape Cod National Seashore is comprised of land from the Southern tip of Monomoy Island off Chatham to Provincetown.

You might be tempted to stop roadside on 6A at the grocery store, but please make that stop at Ferretti’s Market to stock up on items for your villa. Boar’s Head meats, fresh breads and pies, and ready-to-grill items are all available at Ferretti’s. Sandwiches are made to order, so stop by before the beach (beware, lunchtime gets crowded, so call in orders early!) To get there, take the back entrance at The Villages at Ocean Edge and take a right onto Route 137.
