Commanders Corner
Now that school is over and
ummer is upon us, you need to
get your paperwork completed for
Basic Encampment, National
Cadet Special Activities, and ECT.Remember, you need to get the
Unit Commanders signature on
your forms before you turn them
nto Wing to attend. The Unit
Commander will make sure you
are eligible to attend and sign off
he form prior to mailing it to
Wing to attend. This must be done
n advance, not the day of the
event, or it may result in you notbeing able to attend and be senthome. So lets get busy getting the
needed forms and paperwork in
on time, so you can enjoy the
event.
Any Cadet desiring to be the
Squadrons Representative to the
Cadet Advisory Council (CAC) at
Wing to represent the cadets at oursquadron, see Captain Simon to be
assigned and have the paperwork
completed. We should have a
Primary and Secondary

in to what the Cadet Program in
the Wing is doing and going, this
is your program, aspire to be a
leader.
During the weekend of 19-20June 2010, we conducted a Ground
Team Member Level 3 Course and
several members from our
squadron had participated as
Instructors and Students. We had
a great time of teaching, workingand enjoying the company of
several members from other
squadrons from throughout the
Wing. We conducted multi-sortiesto test the knowledge and skills
learned from the course, and all
the students quickly came together
as a team and worked seamlessly
through the sorties and challengesthey faced. I hope you can come
out to the next training session
and work with the outstanding ES
Members we have, not only here
at the squadron, but throughout
the Wing also.
I want to wish Cadet Craig
Coughlin a fond farewell and may
he complete what he needs at thCurtis-Wright Squadron before
attends College in North Jersey
We will miss his leadership,
experience and good sense of
humor around these parts. Goo
luck in college and feel free to
come back and visit us when yo
are back in Cape May.
Congratulations to Cadet Dy

Happy Independence Day!
Whats your freedom worth?
What do you resolve to do that
will help bring out ethical moral
freedom this 4th of July 2010?
Moral Leadership often invites
you to look at how you decide to
do the right thing; even if it means
saying no to your own popularity
or gratification. This
Independence Day offers each ofus the opportunity to reflect over
healthy habits that have slowly let
our mind, body, and soul grow
truly free to be honoring our
forefathers and mothers by ourown life. To respect our freedom,
the life liberty and freedom of
all people we meet and serve.
Want to make it a real Fire works
in the dark sky of unethical
behavior? Join the Red, White, and Blue of other Civil Air Patrol
cadets and staff celebrating what
youre living. True Freedom
responsibly lived with others.
Blessings on you and your 4th of

TestingI know that this is the end of the year andall cadets are busy with final tests, butplease do not forget about CAP.
You need to test in order to promote, andyou need to promote at least twice a year. You need at least the Curry in order toattend Basic Encampment. You needEncampment inorder to receive the
Mitchell Award, which is theequivalent of EagleScout in Boy Scouts.
Either 1st Lt SandraKooker or myself areat the meetings by1800 hours fortesting. Once again, if you are not able tobe at the squadron at that time, we areable to make other arrangements for test
taking if you just let us know.
Congratulations to Cadet Jonathon Clarkon his promotion to C/SrA!
Congratulations to C/A1C James Loftusfor passing his Mary Feik Achievement!
We still are lacking in the number ofcadets who test and PASS. Lets pick upthe pace.
As I am also the squadron assistantfinancial officer, I would like to gentlyremind all cadets that there is a $1 perweek dues. For seniors the dues are $1per year. Seniors may pay at leastmonthly, or for as many months as thewould like at a time.
We do need to have a fundraiser. The
of having a car wash sometime thissummer has been raised, and I think iwould be a fun time. What do you cadthink? We will need your full supportthis- so lets hear your views concerninwhere and when to hold it.

over two days where the temperaturewere around 90 degrees and themosquitoes and ticks were everywheryou could imagine? To get in some goCAP training that is why! First off it wnot as bad as you think. Everyone wawell prepared to face the temperatureand the creatures by drinking plenty owater and using a bit of bug repellent

Well if you havent figured it out, wewere participating in the Ground TeamMember #3 training held in the forest ofBelleplain State Park. There was a lot ofraining packed into two days. Day onencluded a search for a downed aircraft
with pilot. This training tested thetudents ability to come up with a way toransport the injured pilot from a woodedection of the state park to a simulated
waiting ambulance. This scenario alsoested the students ability to find an ELTemergency locater transmitter), whichometimes is not as easy as it seems. Thetudents learned how large bodies of
water like Lake Nummy can make ELTignals seem like they are coming from
where they are not.
After a long hot afternoon of carrying a
pilot and hiking through the woods, itwas time for a nice dinner. This was one
f the highlights of the training, and themenu for the evening was roasted hotdogs. First the students had to do a searchor the proper stick for roasting. Someadets chose different type of sticks andome chose different ways to roast their
hot dogs, but all in all everyone had somegood ole fire roasted hot dogs! Afterdinner the fire was extinguished and theraining continued. Next on the training
chedule was a search for a missing hiker. This scenario taught the students to lookor clues that would enable them to help
find a missing person. Again this meanthiking through the woods and trying tofind someone who was lost and might benjured. The training kicked in, and theost hiker was found after deciphering thelues left by the role player. After a quick
ELT mission in the dark, it was time tohead back to base camp. Once thetudents returned, the instructors
onducted a quick After Action Review,nd then it was time to hit the hay.
Day two started with a quick check of thegear, breaking down tents, and cleaninghe campsite, which was rewarded with a
quick breakfast of fresh bagels and creamheese. Then it was time for the last
mission, which would test all of theprevious training everyone had received.
The mission was a downed aircraft withpilot and co-pilot lost in the woods. Thisby far was one of the longest and mostphysically taxing of all the training. It didnot help that the students had to see andlisten to people swimming, canoeing, andpicnicking at Lake Nummy while theywere searching. However, they overcamethe urge to go swimming in the lake andtrudged into the tick-infested woods ofthe park. All the lessons of day onehelped the cadets find clues and usemaps to track their way through theforest. This scenario tested the leadershipof the team leaders to insure they did notover work their team members or becomedehydrated. After hiking over manydifferent types of terrain and many miles, the downed pilot and co-pilot werelocated safe and sound. After two long,
hot days everyone agreed the trainingwas a success and many of the cadetscould not wait to return to theirsquadrons to show other cadets whatthey had learned.
I really had a good time training and role-playing, which helped all those whoattended learn and work towards gettingtheir qualification as a Ground TeamMember #3. As withall CAP training, it
is a pleasure tomeet new peopleand to see howrewarding CAP isto our members.Till next time, Illsee you in thewoods!

Health ServicesStrong healthy bones are an vital part ofour overall health and wellness. A littleprevention now will go a long waytoward avoiding serious health problemsin the future.
Bones play many roles in the body. Theyprovide structure, protect organs, anchor
muscles, and store calcium. Adequatecalcium consumption and weight beaphysical activity build strong bones, optimizes bone mass, and may reducerisk of osteoporosis later in life.
Peak Bone Mass
Peak bone mass refers to the genetic
potential for bone density. By the age 20, the average woman has acquired mof her skeletal mass. A large decline inbone mass occurs in older adults, increasing the risk of osteoporosis. Fowomen this occurs around the time ofmenopause.
It is important for young girls to reachtheir peak bone mass in order to mainbone health throughout life. A personwith high bone mass as a young adult
will be more likely to have a higher bomass later in life. Inadequate calciumconsumption and physical activity eaon could result in a failure to achievepeak bone mass in adulthood.
Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis or "porous bone" is adisease of the skeletal systemcharacterized by low bone mass anddeterioration of bone tissue. Osteoporleads to an increase risk of bone fractu
typically in the wrist, hip, and spine
While men and women of all ages anethnicities can develop osteoporosis, some of the risk factors for osteoporoinclude those who are:
Female, White/Caucasian, Postmenopausal women, older adults, smin body size, eating a diet low in calciphysically inactive.
To find out more about the prevalence
and risk factors associated withosteoporosis, please visit the NationalOsteoporosis Foundation.*
Calcium
Calcium is a mineral needed by the bofor healthy bones, teeth, and properfunction of the heart, muscles, andnerves. The body cannot producecalcium; therefore, it must be absorbe

Recommended amount of calcium varyor individuals. Below is a table of
adequate intakes as outlined by theNational Academy of Science.
Recommended Calcium Intakes

Vitamin D also plays an important role inhealthy bone development. Vitamin D
helps in the absorption of calcium (this iswhy milk is fortified with vitamin D).
For more information on calcium andchildren visit the National Institute ofChild Health and Human Development(NICHD).
Weight-Bearing Physical Activity
Regular physical activity has beenassociated with many positive healthbenefits including strong bones. Like
proper calcium consumption, adequateweight-bearing physical activity early inlife is important in reaching peak bonemass. Weight-bearing physical activitiescause muscles and bones to work againstgravity. Some examples of weight bearingphysical activities include:
Walking, Jogging, running, tennis, racquetball, field hockey, stair climbinjumping rope, basketball, dancing, hiking, soccer, weight lifting.
Incorporating weight-bearing physicactivity into an exercise plan is a greaway to keep bones healthy and meetphysical activity recommendations se
forth in the Dietary Guidelines forAmericans.
