THE CITY #THECITY#
You can’t help but be impressed by thesplendour of Cape Town’s location, withthe cloud-capped crag of Table Mountainoverlooking the skyscrapers and historicbuildings of the compact city centre. Formany visitors, the cable-car trip to the topand the view from the summit are the highpoint of a Cape Town holiday. For others, the focal point of the city is the V&AWaterfront, a rejuvenated area ofdocklands that is now home to some ofCape Town’s best hotels, restaurants, barsand shopping. Here you can see families ofseals sunbathe within a few feet of smartcafé terraces. The city rises from thewaterfront to the slopes of Table Mountain, with posh residential suburbs – includingthe ultra-exclusive enclave of Constantia –overlooking the downtown area.
Cape Town has much more to offer thancity life. There are excellent beaches just ashort distance from the city centre, atspots such as Clifton, Camps Bay and HoutBay south of the centre and Milnerton andSunset Beach to the north. Only a shortdistance to the south lie the wilds of theCape of Good Hope Nature Reserve –home to a range of wildlife – culminating inthe dramatic scenery of Cape Point.Meanwhile, just a short drive from the cityand its airport lie the lush vineyards andpretty colonial-era towns of the Winelandsregion where some of South Africa’s finestvintages are produced.
