In the Gospel today, Zacchaeus accepts our Lord joyfully; and the sign of his acceptance is his open house and his resolution to give half of

his goods to the poor.

In the month of October, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to bring God’s love and mercy by providing families with food and assisting with rent and utility bills.

Pope Francis on Government and Leaders Responsible politicians are called to the impor-

tant task of being the first servants of their com-munities, taking actions which safeguard above all the fundamental rights of the human person,

among which the right to religious freedom stands out. In this way it will be possible to build, with concrete measures, a more

peaceful and just society, working step-by-step together to solve the

many problems which people experience daily. (6/6/15)

Jubilee Year of Mercy Last Sunday’s Gospel gave us a tax collector’s beautiful prayer to take with us from this Jubilee Year of Mercy. Today, another tax collector’s encounter with Jesus offers a comforting memory to cherish, but also a challenging mission to embrace. Zac-chaeus’ short stature (see Luke 19:3) matched how contemptible, socially and spiri-tually, Zacchaeus’ religious acquaintances considered tax collectors to be. Jesus counters that judgment with mercy. Radical sin meets unmerited grace. God seeks and finds the lost; a sinner’s home becomes salvation’s house. The sinner “quickly” welcomes salvation “with joy” (19:6), while the righteous grumble judgmentally at God’s mercy. Mercy challenges us, too. Like Zacchaeus, we have been sought and found by Jesus, called by name to welcome Jesus into our heart’s home. Therefore, we must go forth from this Jubilee Year of Mercy as “missionaries of mercy,” seek-ing our fellow sinners with Jesus, receiving them with joy (see 19:6) as cherished brothers and sisters, and joyfully offering our judgment-free hospitality as Jesus’ own “Welcome home!” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

YOUNG AT HEART Please join the Young at Heart Group this Friday as they make Thanksgiving Greeting cards for area nursing home residents. The group meets at An-gel House beginning at 9:00 am. No special tal-ents are needed to help this very special ministry.

SAINT MARTIN DE PORRES (1579-1639) November 3 An old illustration pictures Martin de Porres, finger to his lips—“Shhhh!”—as several mice peek out of sacristy vestment drawers, preparing to join a rodent “procession” following him out of church! Martin’s rescue of these unwelcome “guests,” and statues depicting him, broom in hand, feeding a dog, cat, bird, and

mouse from the same dish symbolize his life and sanctity. Ini-tially denied entrance by the Dominicans because of “mixed race” (Spanish father, Panamanian mother), Martin cherished society’s marginalized. For him, menial tasks, lovingly done, were sacred. Great and lowly alike feasted on his charity. Ene-mies were reconciled by this “poor mulatto” (his self-description), kind even to those whose racism demeaned him. Apprenticed to a surgeon-barber in his youth—thus patron saint of hair stylists and public health providers—Martin dispensed healing and dignity to Lima’s poorest, serving in them the Christ he adored for hours in the Blessed Sacrament. By the time he died, all Peru called him “Martin the Charitable,” a title even those of us who will never be called “saint” might still as-pire to. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. Wednesday Morning Adult Ed: We’ll be held each Wednesday with mass @ 8:30 a.m. Father (oops, Bishop!) Robert Barron, the creator of the Ca-tholicism DVD series, has created a new series, Catholicism the Pivotal Players, which will highlight some of the Great Cloud of Witnesses, the Saints, who have been important in helping us develop in our faith. We encourage all who are available to join us in Craven Hall to watch this series with us.

Did you know that our parish offers professionally made audio produc-tions from the World’s Best Catho-lic Speakers? There’s a rack full of them in our Parish vestibule; just stop by and pick one up for yourself or others to grow faith or find some inspiration. When you are done, just return to rack for someone else to enjoy.

Join the Knights of Co-lumbus for the St. Wil-liam Fall Parish Clean-up Day. Work begins at 9:00 am on Saturday, November 5th. There is much to do to ready

our church for the upcoming Advent Season.
