Capital Petanque Club First Sunday of the Month Competition. From your editor,

Apologies to players in Belconnen for the incorrect playing time in the last Boulesheet.It is 10am on Saturday morning for a lakeside game.

Morning games might be a good idea with the shortening days. A recent Tuesday afternoon session saw us playing a last end by the light of a phone torch debating about whether it was snowing or only sleeting. Time for the lights.

No photos of the first Sunday of the month competition this month as all my games were long. Luckily the light was good the weekend before and I took some then.

The English Petanque Association video was recommended to me and I have been trying simple tweeks to my throwing based on their clear advice. Worth a look.

Coming attractions is showing some more events for your calendar. The year is going fast!

Hope you all enjoy the new Smith’s pointing ‘n shooting competitions.

Rob and I are going away for the month of July so there may be a longer gap between Boulesheets than usual. Keep on sending your news and photos and I’ll put them out when we return.

For the first two games we enjoyed a sunny Sunday afternoon for the June First Sunday of the Month. The third more shaded games sent many players for more layers and we played on.

Thanks again to our vigilant umpire Rhys.

Jennifer topped the women’s tally with Annette in second position, and for the men David was the winner with Bob coming in second. Congratulations to all!

With only four rounds of the 2018/19 competition left, Catherine and Ivo are at the top of the leader-boards.

Remember that to be eligible to have your name etched on our beautiful perpetual trophy, you need to play in a minimum of 15 matches over the year.

See you at the next round of the competition on July 7th.

On Wednesday 22nd May the women who turned up for the morning petanque decided to go feral and play extreme petanque. 

We started on the left side of the piste and played down the dirt road, making a slight detour to the left, then crossed the road and played across the grass.  We threw the cochonet forward and wherever it landed was where we played to. 

We heated up, after playing for some time, so we took our coats off, putting them over a branch and played on through the trees.  We ended up playing up the dirt road on the other side of the piste and then went off to coffee. 

It was a lovely morning and such fun playing off-piste.

Reusable hand warmers are a touch of luxury for the winter piste. They stay warm for an hour or so and you can reactivate by putting them in hot water.

Alternative Obut SupplierOur club received the letter below from a supplier from New Zealand. He has a reasonable price list but things may be more expensive if you want to have engraving done.

Piste mattersThere has been discussion about the surface of our piste and the possibility of change.

Jim has a copy of the original specifications that were used successfully in tender documents.

It may be of interest to look at the original materials that made up the surface.

1. Road base (100mm) DGS 20 or equivalent

2. Middle layer (50mm) 75% 10mm aggregate and 25% crusher dust (sample to be provided prior to delivery to site)

3. Top layer (10mm) 50% 5mm aggregate and 50% washed sand (sample to be provided prior to delivery to site)

Since then the piste has had some degree of gravel and surface variation as grooming and top ups occur. Players have their favourite spots and conditions to play.

The question has been raised is about whether our piste is preparing us to play on the world of petanque pistes that are not as regular as we are used to.

Coming Attractions

Attention CPC Members:  New Interstate Tournament Announced, Expressions Of Interests welcome.

The Petanque Federation of Australia has announced a new interstate tournament, to be held on 7 and 8 September in Adelaide this year.

The Committee is wondering if there is interest from any CPC members in forming an ACT team to participate?  We need 3 men and 3 women to play in a variety of formats; singles, doubles, triples over the weekend, against the other states.  Entry is $100 per team.  There is some chance an ACT team could be augmented with players from Tas or Qld if necessary.  It is also possible to enter a team in the Over 60 years category.  The team will need a captain.

Members should note that this is the week before the CPC 10th anniversary tournament, to be held on 14 Sept here in Canberra.  The Masters Games are in Adelaide too, in October, fyi.

Can CPC members interested in the PFA's interstate tournament please send an email to president@capitalpetanque.org.au with your expression of interest by Friday 28 June?

The Capital Cup Tournament 2019

The Capital Cup Tournament 2019 The Capital Petanque Club in Canberra will be holding The Inaugural Capital Cup Mixed Doubles Competition on Saturday September 14th. This has been timed to coincide with Floriade, one of Canberra's main tourist events.

We are aiming to attract some interstate players. It is also part of the celebrations for the 10th anniversary of the creation of the club.

Full details will be available closer to the event and registration will be through the Mypetanque website. There will be prizes (not cash).

An interesting rule came into the last end of the last game of the last weekend’s Sunday of the Month. It really makes it easier to understand and remember rules when you encounter them in play.

At an early end a player shot the coche off the marked piste in a situation where he was the only player left with boules. This was deemed a dead end and he was able to count his remaining boules as points. Later in the game another shot the coche was shot out in the last possible end. The 4 surrounding umpires ( In how many clubs would that situation be possible? ) were able to point out that last end cannot be a dead end. The coche was to be placed back where it was. However, we had not marked the coche position beforehand. We played on after putting it on an approximate spot.

So the big lesson is mark that coche!
