2 The University of Alabama


PrefaceThe University of Alabama has experienced massive growth over the past ten years. In 2007,

enrollment equaled 25,000 students. For the Fall 2016 semester, enrollment at The University

of Alabama reached a record high of 37,665 students.

Since 2003, The University of Alabama has accommodated this growth by constructing 98

new buildings with a total of 6,242,496 square feet. These new buildings represent a total

project value of over $1 billion. Additionally, there were 68 major renovations and additions

that resulted in 1,162,000 square feet, with a total project value of almost $500,000,000.

The University of Alabama campus now boasts a total of 1,374 acres, 297 buildings, 46 Greek

Houses, over 15,000,000 square feet of campus facilities, and 8,400 beds.

The University of Alabama’s Construction Administration Department proudly offers this

booklet showcasing the current active and planned capital projects on campus. For each

project, you’ll find architectural renderings, location maps, and an overview of the details of

the project.

Adapted Athletics Facility

The Adapted Athletics Facility at The University of Alabama is the first facility in the country that is dedicated to adapted athletics. The UA Adapted Athletics Program has over 30 student-athletes competing in wheelchair basketball, wheelchair tennis, para-rowing, and adapted golf. UA’s Adapted Athletics program has won 5 national championships in men’s and women’s wheelchair basketball, and 2 national championships in wheelchair tennis. Additionally, over 100 students participate in non-competitive options.

H�M� Comer Renovation



Project Overview:• Budget: $24,600,000• Project Start: April 2017• Expected Completion: Fall 2018• Total Square Footage: 21,486• Complete Interior and Exterior Renovation

Named for Hugh Moss Comer, H.M. Comer was originally constructed in the 1960s. The building houses the administrative and departmental offices for the College of Engineering, a welcome center, and classrooms. It also houses the Capstone Engineering Society.

The purpose of the renovation is to update the building to match North Engineering Research Center (NERC), centralize student services for the college, and create a more open office environment.

Features:• Addition of a new west entrance• Updating the mechanical, electrical, and

plumbing systems• Center for Unique Business Enterprises• A lab incubator to showcase the latest

technology in the college

This addition to the Mal Moore Athletic Facility will be a two-story addition to the north side of the building. This dining facility will provide healthier nutritional options for the student-athletes in an effort to meet the new NCAA guidelines for post-workout nutrition.

The dining hall’s close proximity to the training facilities will have a positive effect on student-athlete performance, health and well-being.

The Frank Moody Music Building houses The University of Alabama School of Music along with the Million Dollar Band. The facility also contains a 1,000-seat concert hall.

The purpose of the addition and renovation is to accommodate growth in the music program and to provide a practice hall for the Million Dollar Band. The Million Dollar Band puts on over 50 performances per year and practices at least five days per week. The addition and renovation will create space for the band to practice during inclement weather and hold meetings of the full band.

The New Freshmen Residence Hall will replace Somerville Hall. The building will occupy the space from Ridgecrest East to McCorvey Drive.

As enrollment on campus grows, so does the need for student housing. Hence, the purpose of the project is to address the high demand for on-campus freshmen housing. The residence hall will be co-ed with men and women on separate floors controlled via access control measures.

Project Overview:• Budget: $60,000,000• Expected Project Start: Summer 2019• Expected Completion: 2020• Total Square Footage: 130,088• Provides a multi-functioning, state-

of-the-art venue for performances and infrastructure

The stage is set for a new home for the arts at The University of Alabama. The new Performing Arts Academic Center, which will connect to the restored Bryce Main, will be the grand centerpiece of the nucleus of campus.

The Performing Arts Academic Center will allow the Department of Theatre and Dance to combine all performance and academic functions in a single area of campus.

The Tutwiler Parking Deck will be located at the southeast corner of the Tutwiler Development directly south of Tutwiler Hall.

The addition of the parking deck will provide necessary support to the future Tutwiler Residence Hall and further development of this area of campus.

The Bryce Park Food Service project will be strategically located adjacent to the new North Lawn Hall classroom building. The project will provide an engaging and exciting food service venue and student-centric space for programs located on the Peter Bryce campus. The proximity of the project to Bryce Main along with the proposed University Welcome Center located therein will provide an opportunity for campus visitors to experience student life. The project proposal also provides 2,500 square feet of outdoor covered dining to accommodate 115 people.

2nd Avenue Overpass

Project Overview:• Budget: $14,700,000• Project Start: December 2018• Expected Completion: March 2020 • Purpose is to provide an overpass above

the railroad tracks in order to ease campus traffic and improve safety

The 2nd Avenue Overpass is essential to decrease campus traffic delays and improve safety conditions near campus. The overpass will provide an alternative route to ~70,000 vehicles that cross the railroad tracks each day.

Part of the Coleman Coliseum parking lot will be converted into a three-lane road. The plans include bicycle lanes, a pedestrian walkway, and safety barriers.

The design of the project intends to preserve as many parking spaces in the Coleman Coliseum parking lot as possible.

Features:• 10’ bike/pedestrian way• 4’ zone with protective barrier• Two 12’ travel lanes
