In the Spotlight” ~ Kindergarten

Tri-County kindergarten students just completed the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening. “PALS” screens a student’s awareness of letters, letter sounds, rhyme, beginning sounds, spelling, and reading. This test will be given again in the spring to assess growth. We are busy printing and identifying letters and sounds to create words, reading high frequency words, and re-telling stories using characters, setting, and main idea. The students are also identifying sounds at the begin-ning, middle, and end of words, as well as rhyming words. Students are learning many ways information is or-ganized such as letters, poems, songs, sentences, stories, numbers, calendars, charts, graphs, patterns, and groups. Kindergarten students are printing numbers 0-10. Soon we will be printing numbers to 20 and learning addition and subtraction. We will practice counting to 100 by ones and tens. Kindergarten students will be ex-pected to verbalize appropriate questions and responses to who, what, when, where, why, how, and what if questions. As you can see, kindergarten has changed! Of course, we have also had lots of fun going to the school forest, listening to Mrs. Helmrick read stories, going to recess, art, music, phy. ed., and the library. We have also made fun seasonal projects.

Middle School Soccer By: Coach Seegert

The 5th and 6th grade team ended the season with a 3-3-1 record. They won against teams from Westfield, Montello, and Wautoma. This team learned the skills of soccer, playing together, and having fun! The following were on this years team: Alex Bodillo, Joseph Becher, Allie Booth, Lily Klisiewicz, Jose Ramirez, Megan Reilley, Christian Rodriguez, Luis Tienda, Carlos Garcia, Jose Martinez, Daniella Pascual, Felipe Ramirez, Lucas Makaryk and Alex Wilkes. I would like to thank all the parents who were supporting their son or daughter at each game and picking them up after practice. I look forward to next year for another great season of soccer!

High School art students recently visited the Woodson Art Museum in Wausau to view the internationally famous Birds in Art Show. While there the students observed a demonstra-tion of bronze casting by the artist Paul Rhymer. Paul worked for many years creating dis-play dioramas and taxidermy for the Smithsonian Institute. Since retiring he has been cre-ating sculpture and has been one of the artists regularly included in the Birds in Art show.

Tri-County FFA Attends State FFA FIRE Conference Ivy Klabunde, Briana Dickinson and Paige Moen of the Tri-County FFA Chapter at-tended the Wisconsin Association of FFA FIRE Conference, October 12 at the Fox Valley Technical College Campus in Appleton, Wisconsin. FIRE stands for “Foundations in Reaching Excellence.” The conference helps young FFA members discover opportunities in the FFA organization and gain valuable leadership skills. This is one of three conferences held around the state of Wisconsin for seventh, eighth and ninth grade FFA members. Over 600 members will attend these three conferences during September and October. The State FFA FIRE Conference is designed to inform beginning FFA members about the FFA and motivate them to participate in its many activities. Students learned about communication skills, social skills, goal setting, FFA awards and programs, and op-portunities in agriculture along with developing leadership skills to help them be effec-tive members in their local chapters. The conference is conducted by the 2013-2014 State FFA Officer Team along with assistance from the FVTC-Appleton Post Secondary Agricultural Student Organiza-tion. The conference was centered around the theme “Survivor – FFA Edition”. All of the state officers encouraged students that attended the FIRE Conference to set goals for their FFA involvement and meet people from around the state who can help them reach those goals. Not only does this conference help students understand the FFA organization and all its opportunities, but helps them develop skills in meeting people, working with others and setting goals with a plan of action. “In the FFA, we assist members starting in sev-enth grade to develop skills they will need for future careers and opportunities,” said Cheryl Zimmerman, State FFA Executive Director. “FFA develops the whole person and these young members are taking a step in the right direction.”

Heidi Ertl is a 9th grader.

Congratulations

Heidi ... A wonderful

student who focuses on

her academics optimisti-

cally... A diligent stu-

dent ready to take ad-

vantage of every oppor-

tunity to help her future

and others. Heidi was

nominated by Mr.

Pieper.

10th grader, Elizabeth Hoff-

man, has shown remarkable

turnaround concerning

grades and attitude thus far

this school year. Mr. Raboin

said that she serves as an in-

spiration to her peers.

Sarah Chojnacki is an 11th

grader. She has consis-

tently demonstrated poise

and determination this

year in all that she has

done. Mr. Raboin said

that Sarah’s efforts in EE

and Student Council have

had many positive impacts

on the other students in

our building.

12th grader, Cindy Juarez, is

a quiet, conscientious stu-

dent, according to Mrs.

Limbach-Brown. She is

open to trying new things,

such as going out for bas-

ketball last year for the first

time as a junior. I think she

probably leads the seniors in

best over-all attendance re-

cord. She’s great to have in

class!

FROM FFA: On October 24, 2013 the Tri-County FFA Chapter held a

Food for America program for the 3rd grade students at Tri-County. To start

the day the FFA taught the kids about FFA and the many opportunities that

come with joining the organization. The FFA members taught the students

how to prepare a few simple healthy foods including: butter, scrambled eggs,

ice cream, and fruit smoothies. As the kids prepared the food the FFA mem-

bers shared how the foods were made, health facts, and how local farms

helped bring them the food they eat on a daily basis. The day ended with the

FFA members and 3rd graders having lunch together. The Tri County FFA

hopes to continue this program for years to come. An upcoming event the

FFA hopes to do is bring the kids out to a local farm. Seeing the farm will

hopefully help the kids see how many of their local ag products are grown and

raised.

Louisville, KY- On Wednesday, October 30, Abby VanHaren, Raymond Lauer, Lucas Marinack, Matthew Nigh, Elizabeth Kemnetz, Brianna Shackelford, Tony Marinack, Cindy Baumgartener and Randy VanHaren from the Tri-County FFA Chapter and Alumni traveled to Louisville, Kentucky to participate in the 86th National FFA Convention. During October 30 through November 2, students participated in several tours, a career expo, and convention sessions. Students participated in tours of the Louisville Slugger Factory and Museum, the Kentucky Derby Track and Museum, and Mammoth Cave National Park. The convention expo allowed students to explore career and educational opportunities from more than 450 industry-leading exhibitors. Some of the features from the sessions that students attended included hearing from the mayor of Louisville; being inspired by Rick Pitino, coach of the University of Louisville men’s basketball team, 2013 NCAA Division 1 Champions; reflecting as they listened to the retiring address by Brennan Costello 2012-2013 National FFA Central Region Vice President; and educated by National FFA Advisor, Dr. Steve Brown. Abby VanHaren was selected as a national finalist for the National FFA Organizations national proficiency award in Emerging Agricultural Technology-Entrepreneurship/Placement. VanHaren is one of only four people who competed for this award at the national finals during the 86th National FFA Convention and Expo. Proficiency awards recognize outstanding student achievement in agribusiness gained through establishment of a new business, working for an existing company or otherwise gaining hands-on career experience. The Emerging Agricultural Technology- Entrepreneurship/Placement Award is one of 49 proficiency program areas in which FFA members can participate to develop valuable experience and leadership skills at the local, state, and national level. Abby, works for her parent’s business, offering different services to agriculturalists and businesses. They complete crop consulting, which includes monitoring of crops for pests and nutritional problems from the time they are planted to the time they are put in storage. In this proc-ess, VanHaren utilizes a molecular diagnostic tool to check plant foliage, soil, and insects for different diseases. Abby is supported by her par-ents Cindy Baumgartner and Randy VanHaren and her FFA advisor Amie Stillman. This award was sponsored by Ag Leader Technology and BASF, as a special project of the National FFA Foundation. In recognition of being a finalist, each finalist received a plaque and $500. Stu-dents look forward to returning to Louisville for the next two years.

POWER UP WITH SCHOOL BREAKFAST Submitted by Tammie Weis, Food Service

Why breakfast? Studies have shown that hungry children

have less energy available for cognitive and social activities, resulting in learning difficulties. Simply stated, hungry children cannot learn; therefore, a nutritionally sound breakfast, every day, should be identi-fied as a key component to a child’s ability to learn. By making breakfast part of every child’s school day, absenteeism, tar-diness, and disciplinary referrals drop, while overall student performance and behavior improves. Believing that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and be-

lieving that all students, would benefit tremendously from receiving a nourishing

healthy breakfast, we, the Tri-County Area School Food Service Program, have

made it our immediate priority to make breakfast accessible to all students,

every day.

What Makes A Meal Grains * Meats* Vegetables * Fruits (fresh or cupped fruit, or 100% fruit juice) *

Milk At lunch, students may select three to five of the above food groups to

complete their meal. At least one of these choices MUST be from the fruit or

vegetable group.

SLD Notification for Schools as Required by PI 11.36(6)(c)2 Wisconsin’s rule for identifying students with specific learning disabilities (SLD) has changed. No later than De-cember 1, 2013, all initial SLD evaluations of public school students will use information from interventions to make eligibility decisions. This article is to notify you that beginning on December 1, 2013 initial SLD evaluations at Tri-County Area Schools will use information from a student’s response to intensive, scientific research-based or evidenced-based interventions when making special education eligibility decisions. This change in qualification procedures will be implemented in our district by using a system known as "Response to Intervention (RTI)". RTI is designed to identify student struggles in academics and behaviors early on and pro-vide interventions that have been proven to work. Following the question-and-answer session, we will have the usual and much anticipated informal gathering in the "science department." We will have lots of food and refreshments. We hope it will be a chance for you to see each other again and get caught up on what has been happening at Tri-County. Hope to see you on the 20th.
