EDUCATION NEWS
Florida Supreme Court Justices
Court Decision on 3% FRS ContributionIn a 4-‐3 vote, the Florida Supreme Court has ruled that legislaIve changes to the Florida ReIrement System, including the requirement that employees contribute 3% of their salaries toward their reIrement plan, DO NOT violate the Florida ConsItuIon. These legislaIve changes, which were enacted during the 2011 legislaIve session, had been challenged by the Florida EducaIon AssociaIon and others who argued, in part, that the changes violated collecIve bargaining rights.
Commissioner Tony Bennett listens to state educatorsIn his first day on the job, Florida's new education commissioner told school administrators from around the state that he wants to hear from them regularly, and that disagreement can be a good thing.Educators want more specifics from Gov. Rick Scott "Education changed my life," Gov. Rick Scott said Monday. His young life, yes. His political life? Not yet. Two years in junior college led Scott to the Navy, then a four- year degree on the GI Bill and a law degree led to success in business.New education commissioner faces skeptical crowd Florida's new education commissioner, Tony Bennett, sought to hold his own Monday before a skeptical crowd of public school officials attending their annual legislative conference in TallahasseeScott and Legislature to examine school securityLawmakers and Gov. Rick Scott are looking at ways to improve security at Florida public schools following the tragic school shooting in Connecticut, but the scope and cost of those improvements remain unclear.Schools take ABC approach to STDs, health High rates of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases have Lee County school officials looking to find more ways for students to take health courses. And expanding health education may just be the key to curbing those numbers.Senators: Cutting school safety money in Florida isn't a good idea The state budget includes $64.4 million for school safety, $11 million less than in 2008, according to figures presented Wednesday by the Department of Education. In Northeast Florida's five school districts, the money was reduced from $5.8 million to $4.9 million. There is $700,000 less in Duval County, down from $4.1 from $3.4 million.Florida's rule on ACT scoring frustrates potential graduatesAlan Sourk thought his son had finally passed his exit-level high school reading test. The Wiregrass Ranch High School junior scored a 20 on the ACT reading test in December. That was two points above the mark listed on state documents as an acceptable replacement score for the FCAT graduation requirement.
