the show on the waters around the city alone is worth the trip. Ships and boats of all sizes and varieties converge on the greatest city on Earth

at all times of the year, each with a story all its own. Let’s add yours to the lineup.

To find New York City, take your choice of three channels, depending on your previous destination: the Chapel Hill South Channel west of Sandy Hook, the Swash Channel north of that, or the Ambrose Channel coming around the southern end of Long Island. Eventually, all three come together (Chapel Hill South and Swash meet to form Chapel Hill North, and Chapel Hill North feeds into Ambrose).

From that point of convergence, head north-northwestward through the Ambrose, and you’ll come to buoys green No. 19 and red No. 20. Pass through them, watching for Norton Point on Coney Island to starboard, and you’ve entered New York’s Lower Bay. Head northwest and watch for Staten Island to port and Brooklyn to starboard, then pass underneath the Verrazano Narrows Bridge. You’re now in the Narrows, headed for the Upper Bay. Anchorage Channel will be your main passage, so

follow it as it bears around to the northeast. By the time you’ve reached the red No. 28 buoy, you’ll have

made your acquaintance with the Statue of Liberty; she’ll be to port as you pass between her and Governors Island to starboard. Watch for an increase in waterborne traffic. Using Lady Liberty as your guide, look for Ellis Island to the northeast, and, on the mainland, to the west of that, Jersey City. To starboard is Manhattan, the fork in the road between the Hudson River, to the north, and the East River, to the east. Follow the Hudson, and just as the river makes a strong turn to the north, look to port and you’ll see the Lincoln Harbor Yacht Club and Marina, a state-of-the-art facility with 275 slips and a wave attenuator, whose dockmaster can be reached on channel 74.

Now that the maritime show is over, it’s time for New York to blow you away with its never-ending lists of places to go and things to do: a ballgame at Yankee Stadium, a show on Broadway, a climb to the top of the Empire State Building. And these are just the basics for any tourist. Find what it is in New York City that gets your blood flowing, and make it your own.

Monitor Channel #68 there was a time when Americans looked to Europe for inspiration of all kind—for poetry, for art, for sculpture. Centuries

of culture from across the Atlantic filled the void for intellectuals in the New World who had yet to produce classic novels or great works of art.

Today, to capture both ancient Europe and the best of today’s America, one needs look no farther than Huntington.

So let’s get you there.Huntington Bay is formed by Eaton’s Neck to the east and

Lloyd Neck to the west. Together, they gradually funnel you past a red bell buoy marking Target Rock and into the greater bay. East Beach, on Lloyd Neck, is to your west; West Beach, on Eaton’s Neck, is to your east.

Sliding down along the western shore, you’ll find the Huntington Harbor Lighthouse. The all-reinforced concrete tower sports more character than your average lighthouse, looking more like a castle from medieval Europe than a modern American lighthouse. Really, though, it represents the architectural style of its day, and an era when government buildings were given a little flair. Pick up the channel alongside the lighthouse and work your

way between the seawall to the west and Wincoma Point to the east. Continue down the channel as it bends to the southeast, and you’ve found Huntington Harbor.

Inside the harbor, you’ll find there are plenty of docking opportunities, including the friendly Huntington Yacht Club on the eastern shore. There’s also a municipal facility at the southern end of the harbor that can take care of both you and your boat.

The locals know this place as the Gold Coast, and so do the many entertainers from the music, television and film industries who come to the bars and beaches. It’s the perfect place to chase the American Dream of chasing celebrities.

But if you find your curiosities are driving you to look deeper, perhaps to the inspirations of old, visit the Heckscher Museum of Art, where five centuries of paintings reach back from American masters to the best Europe had to offer a half millennium ago. The Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum recalls the days when iron men sailed wooden ships in search of oil-bearing marine mammals. The Vanderbilt Museum is famed for its planetarium and wonderful astronomy programs for kids of all ages.

Yes, Huntington is the center of culture at the western end of Long Island Sound.

like many Long Island towns, Northport has had its booms and busts. There was a time, before it was Northport, when it was famous for

its cows—so famous, in fact, that it was known as Great Cow Harbor. Farming ruled, until the shipbuilders moved in during the middle of the 19th century. That industry came and went in about 50 years, leaving Northport to push on with tourism as its raison d’etre. Hotels and shops that opened during the shipbuilding era remained, now patronized by visitors traveling to town by way of streetcars.

Those streetcars stuck around until 1924—but you wouldn’t know they were gone. The tracks remain today, in a town that boasts a Main Street still lined by gorgeous Victorian homes and shops. Northport exudes an historic charm that most communities lost somewhere in the last hundred years.

To hone in on that charm from the east, round Eaton’s Neck. Coming from the west, round Lloyd Point and slide slowly down the coast to the east-southeast. No matter which way you’ve approached, by the time you reach the No. 8 flashing red bell buoy, you’ll realize you’ve been funneled directly down into Huntington Bay.

Looking to the southeast, pick up a flashing green No. 1 buoy at the southern end of West Beach (which is to the east), which will start your voyage into Northport Bay. Follow the markers through the channel into the bay to the east, passing Winkle Point and Duck Island Bluff to the north. Find a flashing red No. 8 buoy off the northern end of Little Neck Point—its seawall will be facing you as you approach—and head southeast into Northport Harbor.

Once inside the harbor, don’t rely on your NOAA chart too much: the aids to navigation from that point forward are privately owned and maintained. For those of you on vessels up to 60 feet in length, you have to look no farther than Seymour’s Boatyard, which has been serving boaters in Northport since 1923. As their crew boasts, tie up there, and within 15 minutes you’ll be sitting down to dinner in downtown Northport.

After dinner, check out a show at the Engeman Theater, another longstanding Northport tradition, or take the self-guided walking tour of the town’s historic points. If you didn’t dine outdoors—yet another Northport hallmark—find dessert and eat it al fresco. Who needs a roof over one’s head on a beautiful Long Island summer night?

it’s all in the name. Port Jefferson started out as Souwasett, most likely a corruption of the Setauket word Poquosett, meaning “drowned

meadow.” That name, in English, was applied to the town in 1682, after which the community became a shipbuilding center. But building ships in “Drowned Meadow” sounded counterproductive, so the community leaders decided to honor former President Thomas Jefferson by naming the town after him in 1836.

Sound circus-like? Well, get this: P.T. Barnum, the great Bridgeport, Connecticut, entertainer, once had designs on making Port Jefferson the home base of his circus—but, in the end, the locals would not have it. He did, though, establish a ferry between those two communities that still runs today.

To find all this fun: If you’re coming from the west, round Old Field Point, south of the green No. 11A gong buoy, and head to the east-southeast along Old Field Beach, a barrier beach protecting Port Jefferson Harbor. A green No. 1 and red No. 2 buoy mark the break in the thorough shoaling of the area, and the entrance to the dredged channel into Port Jefferson Harbor.

If you’re coming from the east along the northern Long Island shore, you won’t be able to miss Mount Misery Point. Beyond the entrance to Mount Sinai Harbor, Mount Misery stands 180 feet at its apex and slopes off gradually into Long Island Sound. Sixty-foot bluffs meet the sound, accompanied by sand banks above White Beach, the remnants of the work of local sand and gravel excavators.

From there, it’s a straight shot to the south end of the harbor, and the town of Port Jefferson. The municipal marina is the largest dockage in the area, 165 slips, and a welcome home away from home for transient boaters.

Over the past decade, Port Jeff, as the locals know it, unveiled its beautiful Harborfront Park in stages, from a playground and picnic area to sculptures and a waterfront promenade. It’s a welcoming sight in a town that also boasts the Long Island Seaport and Eco Center, a regular calendar of top entertainment at Theatre Three, and so much more. And if you’re wondering about its seafaring cred, get this: Not only was Port Jeff a longtime whaling capital, two recent America’s Cup winners, the 1987 and 1992 champs, hailed from Port Jefferson. This is a community that understands your language.

if you lived on Shelter Island, would you share it with the world? There’s something to be said for preserving a personal paradise, but there’s more to be said about

someone willing to share it with others. The people of the North Fork know they have it good, from their beautiful landscapes to their famous wines, and while they’re not ready to hand over the keys to the region, they are willing to welcome you.

Gardiners Island lies west of Montauk Point and due south of New London; west of the island is the bay that shares its name. Find them, and you’ve completed step one of your North Fork adventure.

In the heart of Gardiners Bay, look for a red-and-white whistling nun marking the site of an ancient shipwreck. Bypass that in a westerly direction until you find a red No. 2 and a green No. 3, off the southern tip of Long Beach. Follow that channel in a full 90-degree swing around Hay Beach Point on Shelter Island, and start heading southwest. Soon, you’ll see a breakwater running southeast off Young’s Point, your signal that you’ve reached Greenport Harbor.

Greenport’s skyline is immediately recognizable, from its church spires to its water tank and radio tower. Come around

the breakwater, and inside the harbor you’ll find Claudio’s, Townsend Manor Inn and Preston’s, all easily accessible and ready to fulfill all of a transient boater’s needs.

Next, it’s on to Southold. Head out of Greenport Harbor and follow the channel to the southwest. Run between Fanning Point to starboard and Shelter Island Heights to port, but take note that a ferry crosses this short passage routinely. Beyond Fanning Point to starboard is Pipes Cove, framed on its western edge by Conkling Point. The channel S-curves between Conkling Point and Jennings Point on Shelter Island and emerges into Southold Bay. Southold is right there, to the west-southwest.

To find Shelter Island, retreat to that red-and-white buoy back in Gardiners Bay. Look to the southwest to find Ram Head. Travel south toward it, watching for a flashing green No. 1 buoy off its eastern end. That will lead you to private navigational aids that will direct you into Coecles Harbor, between Sungic Point on the south and Reel Point on the north. In the northwest corner of the harbor, you’ll find Coecles Harbor Marina and Boatyard.

times sure have changed in Sag Harbor. In days past, the streets were alive with a certain breed of young man:

energetic, willing and forward-thinking. That young man also was from another world, maybe the Azores, perhaps Portugal. He was looking for a spot on a whaling ship, with dreams of someday commanding his own.

But whaling is gone, and Sag Harbor has changed gears. It’s gone from big business to relaxation, from scrimshaw peddlers to, well, antique scrimshaw shopping. Sag Harbor’s proud history remains, under the surface, three centuries since its founding.

To find Sag Harbor, slide down into the southwest corner of Gardiners Bay, where you’ll find a lone green No. 1 can buoy. To the west-southwest, you’ll find green No. 3. Leave that one to port and do the same with Cedar Point; you can’t miss it, with its abandoned granite lighthouse and a modern skeletal light. Follow the channel southward as it heads into Northwest Harbor—but take some extra caution here as you work your way toward Barcelona Point to the south: there are a number of large boulders just outside the channel.

Once you’ve passed between Barcelona Point on the south, marked by a flashing green light, and sandy Mashomack Point to the north, your next goal will be to find the red No. 8 nun buoy, and the channel that will safely navigate you past extensive shoaling that becomes partially uncovered at low tide. A flashing red light marks the sand spit, and just opposite of that you’ll find green buoy No. 9A. The rocks here are known to the locals as Gull Island and should be kept at a distance.

Coming around between green No. 11 and a green and red can marked “SH,” you’ll meet the entrance to Sag Harbor, marked at the end of a long breakwater by a flashing green light. Head down the channel to the southeast and look for the Sag Harbor Yacht Club, home of the annual Sag Harbor Charity Cup Challenge. If you’re there at race time, don’t be surprised to see an America’s Cup challenger or two.

Sag Harbor splits Southampton and East Hampton; it is a village unto itself, but definitely part of the Hamptons experience. It’s a place to golf, to shop, to watch nature in all its seasonal splendor, and to reflect on America and its fabulous and varied history in connection with the sea.

there are two ways to start your Hamptons adventure—the difficult way, and the easy way. We’ll start with the former,

then cruise into the latter.“Difficult” is a relative term, of course. To reach Hampton

Bays from the South Shore of Long Island, locate a spot 31 miles southwest of the Montauk Light. That’s where you’ll find Shinnecock Inlet, a passageway opened into Shinnecock Bay by the Great Hurricane of 1938. As it has only had three quarters of a century to find its way, it’s untrustworthy. Its depth fluctuates randomly, making it something that only the locals should really take advantage of.

If you’re willing to test your skills, find the entrance to the inlet. Once inside, turn to port and look for the channel markers. Enter the channel at the red No. 22 buoy and head north-northeastward. The channel will swing you into the northwestern-most corner of Shinnecock Bay, where you’ll find Spellman’s Marine and Jackson’s Marina, among others, and the beauty of Hampton Bays. The Coast Guard is off to the northwest of the inlet, on Ponquogue Point, watching out for your safety.

Now for the easy way.If you’re heading for East Hampton from either Long Island

Sound or Block Island Sound, pass the northern tip of Gardiners Island. You’ll want to swing wide around the point due to the fact that there might still be unexploded ordnance near shore from Fort Tyler’s artillery battery, dating back to the Spanish-American War. The ruins of the fort still stand on the point. There’s a green flashing buoy (No. 1GI) that will help guide you out of any potential harm’s way.

Head south-southwest and take the red No. 14 nun marking Crow Shoal to port. Continue on that south-southwest heading and look for a red-and-white bell buoy marked “TM” for “Three Mile.” Due south, let the rest of the boys do their work and guide you past Sammy’s Beach and into Three Mile Harbor. Docking choices are plentiful on the east and south sides of the harbor, and East Hampton is just a few minutes away.

The real test comes next: Are you ready for the Hamptons? Did you bring your sophistication, along with your good humor? A dinner jacket and an emergency corkscrew for wine-related crises? The Hamptons will live up to everything you’ve heard about them; now it’s up to you to keep up with the Hamptons.

headed to Montauk this summer? Excellent choice!Sighting the end, or the

beginning, of Long Island, depending on your perspective, is easy. Montauk Lighthouse sits 168 feet above sea level at Montauk Point, connected to the keeper’s dwelling by a covered walkway. The manicured lawn surrounding it signals its popularity as a tourist destination, more than two hundred years after its construction.

If you’re coming from Block Island—and if you are, congratulations on finding that gem—find the flashing green buoy marking Cerberus Shoal, and round it to the south. Look ahead for a green-and-red bell buoy marked No. 7SR for Shagwong Reef. Beyond that, to the south-southwest, is the entrance to Lake Montauk, the local harbor.

If you’re coming around from the southern side of Long Island, swing wide around Montauk Point. Watch for a green-and-red buoy marked “SR” for Shagwong Rock to the west-northwest, off Shagwong Point, and keep it to port as you head to the west and look for the entrance to Lake Montauk. Be advised, though, that the area between Shagwong Reef and

Shagwong Rock, including Washington Shoal, has minimum depths around 7½ feet at extreme low tides. If you’re at all worried about striking bottom at those depths, take the extra few minutes to pass north of the buoy marking the reef. Your boat, your crew, your friends and your family will thank you!

The entrance to the lake is a dredged channel about three miles west of Montauk Point. A red-and-white “M” buoy (for Montauk) indicates the channel opening directly to the south, where twin jetties marked with lights will guide you in. Directly ahead of you as you enter the harbor you’ll find the Montauk Coast Guard Station on Star Island (connected to the mainland by a causeway). Star Island Yacht Club and Uihlein’s Marina, at the northern end of the lake, offer transient dockage, and Montauk Marine has gas, ice, groceries and more.

Montauk celebrates summer like only a community at the end of the world can. There’ll be fireworks, and there’ll be live outdoor concerts all season. It has its reflective side in the local museums, and its fancier side in the shops and restaurants downtown. History and modernity meet in Montauk. Who knows who you’ll meet, and what you’ll find, there this summer.

Power Cat from Moorings. We chose the Moorings Power Catamaran because

of its space and privacy design. The 474 PC offers space comparable to that of a much larger monohull, and the twin hull platform makes it more comfortable at anchor and safer at sea. The beam of the Moorings catamaran and the absence of ballast in the keels dramatically reduces rolling at anchor or at the dock. While cruising, the design of the catamaran is more stable and allows tremendous range at cruising speed.

With four staterooms, all featuring luxurious berths, loads of storage space, and private heads and showers, we felt like royalty! The galley was well-equipped with all of the bells and whistles, including blender, microwave, toaster and TV/DVD player; there was zone-specific air conditioning and an iPod-ready stereo system that played on the flying bridge as

well as in the salon. Truly, all you really need is a bathing suit and some sunscreen, and you are pretty well set for the week!

After a wonderful “welcome back” refresher from the Moorings staff, we set off to “dine” our way through the BVI. Our first stop: Great Harbor Peter Island and dinner at Oceans Seven.After tying up to our mooring, we took the dingy and tied up

at their Beach Club dock. The open-air dining room served as the perfect setting for our first night out in the BVI. The smiling staff went over the buffet menu for the night, and we were thrilled to be able to sample a wonderful variety of their specialties, including their West Indian-style grouper and chicken breast in mushroom sauce. The PERFECT start to our BVI dining adventure!

We spent the next morning snorkeling the reef and enjoying the watersports off the beach before heading over to Norman Island and our next BVI dining experience, at Pirates Bight. What is so wonderful about dining your way through the BVI is the mere fact that no two locations are alike Pirates Bight is casual BVI dining at its best! Starting off with a bucket of Bushwackers, moving on to ribs or wings as appetizers, and then comes the hard part choosing the entrée: fresh Anegada lobster, roti, steak, or mahi-mahi? But whichever you choose, you are in for a treat! The food is great, the service is top notch, the atmosphere is carefree and fun!

We asked our daughter Abby where she wanted to spend her 13th birthday, and it came as no surprise when she said … the Bitter End!

Next stop: North Sound …Start the engines, crank the Jimmy Buffet, and away we

go—a nice, easy cruise through the Sir Frances Drake Channel and up to North Sound, Virgin Gorda. Cruising on a power cat has many advantages: lots of space, four heads and showers … and speed! We made it to North Sound nice and early and

were able to have the pick of moorings. So after tying up and packing our beach bags, we headed into shore to say hello to all of our friends at the Bitter End!

Mary Jo and Eva greeted us at the front desk, Kinto waved us over to watersports, and Martin was waiting for us, blender at the ready, when we finally made it to the pool! There is so much to do at the Bitter End Yacht Club, we always plan to stay two days when cruising, or a week if we are staying at the resort. Every imaginable watersport, snorkel trips, hiking—the Bitter End is like the ultimate summer camp for water lovers.

Back on land …After returning

the boat to the Moorings base, we headed to our home away from home—Lambert Beach Resort. Over the past

connecticut’s South Coast is New England’s ambassador to boaters, and it embodies all that New England strives to be. Milford stands at the vanguard. It holds its history close to its heart, yet welcomes modernist creativity in the arts, as exhibited by its many shows, indoors and out, throughout the season. Its oyster festival is second to none, leading the way for other New England communities wishing to celebrate the bounty of the sea. Milford remembers its veterans with stunning rose gardens, a waterfall, memorials and more, in the second-longest town green in all of New England. There’s nature to be seen the natural way (the Milford Point branch of the Connecticut Audubon Society) and the modern way (two beautiful golf courses).

To find Milford and all of this fun, find the mouth of the Wepawaug River. The Wepawaug rests between the majestic Connecticut River to the east and the yeoman-like Housatonic River to the west, two of New England’s most storied waterways. The Wepawaug’s mouth is north of Long Island’s Port Jefferson, and it marks the entrance to Milford Harbor. The harbor is really

just the lower reaches of the river, and not a traditional basin. Coming from the west along the Connecticut shoreline, you’ll

come to a long sand bar terminating at Charles Island. A red No. 16 flashing red bell buoy points out the end of the shoals extending off the island. Keep it to port and enter the body of water known as “The Gulf.” Coming at it from the east, you’ll spy a red No. 2 buoy that will clear you of Welches Point. From either angle, look toward the north for a red No. 4 buoy and the beginning of the channel that will bring you into Milford Harbor. Fort Trumbull Beach, off the port bow, and Gulf Beach, to starboard, will close in on you as you head for the jetties at the narrow entrance.

Milford Harbor is for the recreational boater, but don’t be surprised to find National Marine Fisheries Service vessels here. Head upriver for Milford Landing near the head of the harbor. The marina, which caters specifically to transients, is easily discernible: a big brick headquarters building patriotically flying an American flag.

A final thought, if you’re still not convinced: Captain Kidd reportedly buried treasure on Charles Island that, to date, has not been found. Did you bring your shovel?

scanning eastward from the main passage out of Long Island Sound

and westward along the Connecticut coast from New London and Mystic, you’ll find the mouth of the Connecticut River. Your journey to Old Saybrook begins there, at the Saybrook Outer Bar Channel, by the 125-year-old Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouse, known as the Outer Breakwater Light. Find it to find the path between the breakwaters, the only trustworthy passage across the shifting sands at the mouth of the Connecticut. From the breakwater to the ancient town, it’s just a short run of one and a half miles.

At the green No. 5 buoy, Lynde Point will pass to port as you roll northward. Farther on, also to port, is South Cove. The deep channel swings past shallow rocks to the east, and before you know it, Saybrook Point will be off to port. You can’t miss the Saybrook Point Inn, Marina and Spa, a first-class facility as fine as any in New England waters.

The marina considers your logistical needs—pump-outs, fuel, electricity—and your human desires. Food choices range from waterfront restaurants to grilling up your own specialties

dockside. If it’s a swimming pool that you need, take your pick—indoors or outdoors. Vehicle rentals are nearby. They can be used for short runs in town, or to head for the famous casinos of southern Connecticut for an evening of fun.

Once in Old Saybrook, you’ll find that little that’s important changes. The Fourth of July is still held in great reverence by the locals, and you can expect fireworks. Bands play open-air concerts, boutiques hold sidewalk sales, and there’s more food of all varieties to be taken in than anyone would ever need.

Boating has a special place in the heart of Old Saybrook. Its breakwaters were developed for commerce when faraway factories upriver sent goods by rail through town to the sea. Industry came and went, and now boaters benefit from their presence. The Connecticut River Museum is a place of common ground for older and modern generations of cruisers to meet and share experiences of life on coastal waters. Check out the annual Mahogany Memories boat show this summer.

Old Saybrook holds signature events every year, including the Old Saybrook Arts Festival, now in its 48th year. Old Saybrook is a gathering place for folks seeking a rejuvenation of spirit, and a return to the America of old.

from beluga whales to marathon readings of Moby Dick, no small town tells more of the story of Americans and the sea

than Mystic, Connecticut.To find this special region of southern Connecticut, find

Fisher’s Island and the sound that bears its name east of Long Island’s Orient Point and north of Gardiners Bay. The sound is a rugged place, so sticking to the channel here is an utter necessity to avoid the boulders, creeping shoals and litany of lobster trap buoys that define it. The sound heads in an east-northeast direction toward the mainland.

Once you’ve cleared the western end of Fisher’s Island and the Dumplings, a pair of sandy islets marked North and South, seek a black-and-red marker over Intrepid Rock. North of the rock is Groton Long Point, and directly northeast of the buoy is a green No. 1 buoy, marking the entrance to Mystic Harbor.

The channel turns to the north. Red No. 2 will keep you clear of Swimming Rock, and green No. 3 sits near Planet Rock. If Noank and Spicer’s Marina are your destination, break off here and head around the western shore of Mouse Island—but beware of the shallow waters. Pick up the series of

private aids to navigation, and you’ll be unable to miss Spicer’s in West Noank. Look for their 680-foot breakwater and head for the Connecticut shore.

For Mystic, stay with the main channel and look for a red-and-green nun stamped “MH” for Mystic Harbor. The channel will turn slightly to port at this buoy, passing Noank 6. To port, you’ll see the old Morgan Point Lighthouse, which looks like a stately old home wearing a lantern room for a cap. Hug the Morgan Point coastline and the town of Noank. As it heads northward, the channel swings east to avoid Sixpenny Island, then generally runs northward again. The landmass to starboard is Mason Island. Once you’ve hit buoys No. 30 and 31, you’ll be alongside Willow Point and will be able to see Murphy Point to the northeast. There are marinas here that will invite you in, or you can complete the journey by running into the Mystic River and finding the Mystic Seaport Museum.

The museum is just as good a place to begin as any, but don’t miss the famed Mystic Aquarium, the other local attractions at Olde Mystick Village, and even Mystic Pizza, made famous by the movie of the same name. Yup, unlike Santa Claus, it really does exist!

Off Season Projects

Once the boat is put away for the season, one of my favorite things to do

is to go to the boat shows.


I have three favorite shows: Newport, Rhode Island, Annapolis, Maryland, and the Fort Lauderdale Show in Florida.

You don’t have to be in the market for a new boat to enjoy a boat show. I love simply walking through

the tents and looking at all the new products and accessories. Last year at the Newport show, I came across a booth that stopped me in my tracks. The most beautiful coffee table I had ever seen—cherry wood, dark stain with a mirror finish … I just had to meet the man responsible for such incredible craftsmanship.

Lucky for me, Chelso Arrigoni, owner of Arrigoni Design, was manning his own booth that day, and

as we struck up a conversation, I quickly learned that Chelso has been doing

custom nautical furniture for more than 30 years. The longer we spoke,

the more I was sure that if you need something built for your boat, he is the man to do it! I told him that I might have a project for him; he asked all the right questions, knew exactly what I was talking about

just from the make and model of my boat, and within

minutes we were sitting together selecting wood

types and finishes. The following week, I sent him

the table dimensions, and six weeks later … well, let’s just say this summer we will be doing some fine dining on our exquisite custom table! Thanks, Chelso!

The last winter project was to repair our spongy deck. Our boat, Spray, is a 1978 Trojan, and we LOVE HER!

You know what they say—they just don’t make ’em like this anymore. She is the perfect size for our family of three and occasional guests, and has great classic lines with lots of outside space and a cozy cabin. But … like any older boat, she needs a lot

of TLC. Over the last few years, we noticed that the bow

deck was getting a bit spongy. We stay on a mooring all summer long, and there were some nights when the wind

in the Great Salt Pond neared 50 mph, and we were just praying that the

bow cleat held! I knew it was time to address the issue.

I had visions of this being a monumental and very costly project, so I went

to see my friend Lou Grignon, owner of Sag Harbor Yacht Yard, and he walked me through the process and eased my mind. His talented staff hauled Spray, removed all of the deck hardware, then got to work cutting back the fiberglass deck sheeting to expose the core. They removed the core and prepped the surface of subdeck, then installed a new core,

replaced the top deck laminate, and then fiberglassed all of the seams and applied the final gel coat.

there had to be something about Newport that drew millionaires to it in droves more than a century ago. Of

course, in those days, they went where modern transportation could lead them, along train and steamboat lines to seaside destinations. Cool summer breezes used to be air conditioning.

So the positioning of Rhode Island—the island from which the state gets its name—had something to do with it. But it was those millionaires, those captains of industry, that created the Newport we know today. It was their touches, the construction of the mansions, the growth of the yachting culture, that made the jewel of the Ocean State. Yet, it’s an interesting study in demographics to look just westward to Jamestown and wonder how it remained so passive, so peaceful, in the shadow of such development. It’s the perfect counterpoint to the exclamation point that is Newport.

Northeast of Block Island and northwest of Martha’s Vineyard lies Aquidneck (the other name for the island called Rhode Island), at the northern edge of Rhode Island Sound. The East Passage into Narragansett Bay bisects Brenton Point, which is the southwestern corner of Aquidneck Island, and Beavertail Point to its west, which is the southern tip of

Conanicut Island and is marked by a historic lighthouse. Keep to the eastern side of the passage, clearing the red No. 6 bell buoy near Butter Ball Rock and the Castle Hill Lighthouse and Coast Guard Station to starboard. Run up the channel to the northeast, and take a turn to the southeast around historic Fort Adams and its dock. Look off to the east for the green No. 1 marker at the southern end of Goat Island—that’s Brenton Cove due south—and follow the channel into Newport Harbor.

The Newport Yachting Center should be easy to find: it’s the biggest wharf you’ll see on the eastern shore. Keep an eye out for racing buoys all summer long, as you won’t find them on any charts.

To reach Jamestown from the East Passage, cruise past Fort Adams, leaving it to starboard as you head north. Steer wide of the area known as the Dumplings off the Conanicut Island shore by staying outside the green No. 11 bell buoy, and watch for the channel markers to the northwest that will bring you into Jamestown.

It’s perfectly symbiotic: live the high life in Newport, relax on a nature trail in Jamestown. That’s summer in southern Rhode Island.

fudge.One of the first things you’ll notice about the boating crowd

that visits Block Island is: they know what it is they want out of life. They eat well, they enjoy the camaraderie of other sojourners deep into the early morning hours … and, perhaps most importantly, they know a good piece of fudge when they find one. Walk the main street of New Shoreham, and even duck down the side streets into some of the handmade desserts shops. You’ll find out what we mean.

New Shoreham, too, is a crossroads of New York and New England, where Yankees and Red Sox fans live in peace and harmony. Okay, so we exaggerate—but Block Island speaks both languages, on the beaches, in the bars, and in the many stores that cater to summer revelers. And, the thing is, Block Islanders have been doing just that for more than a century; many of the old hotels and storefronts haven’t changed their facades since the 1880s. It’s as if time stopped for Block Island alone, reserving the best of Victoriana in this one special place.

So, let’s find that special place. If you’re coming out of Long Island Sound and into Block

Island Sound, go east. If you’re coming west along the Rhode Island shore, pass Point Judith and head south-southwest. If you’re cruising up from New York City along the southern shore of Long Island, head east-northeast. Out there in the distance ahead of you—that’s Block Island.

To find the fun on Block Island, find its western shore. The island is fringed by boulders and can shoal up quickly. Give it about a half-mile berth all the way around. Once you’ve found the west side, you’ll easily find the one opening, at Grace Point, two miles south-southwest of stately Block Island North Light. Stick safely to the channel into Great Salt Pond.

That channel is marked by a breakwater on the southwest side that exhibits a light at its end. Clear the red No. 11 and green No. 12 buoys inside the harbor, and you’ve found “the Block.” Look for the biggest marina you can see, Champlin’s, and hail them on channel 68. They’ve got everything a boater needs, all the way down to a place to do some laundry before exploring the island.

You won’t be alone on Block Island, as the birders and the beach bums will be with you (perhaps you’re all three). Expect company and fun times to run straight through Columbus Day, and know that you’re not alone when wishing summer would never end.

there are two ways into Cataumet and Bourne, depending on your previous destinations. If you’ve just harbor-

hopped from Boston to Scituate to Plymouth and are facing the eastern entrance to the Cape Cod Canal, go ahead—dive in. Pass under the Sagamore, Bourne and railroad bridges, and come out the other end of the canal. Then, simply follow the channel all the way to a red #2 buoy, swing to port and head inside Wing’s Neck toward Red Brook Harbor.

Bear with us for a moment. We’ll be right back …If you’ve just come from Rhode Island Sound after spending

time in New York Harbor, in Newport, or on Block Island, you’re approaching the western end of the Cape Cod Canal. The main channel begins off the west end of Cuttyhunk, the last of the Elizabeth Islands chain, which runs for fourteen miles back to the mainland to the east. You’ll be running alongside the entire chain, from Penikese to Uncatena. At the red #10 buoy, look to the north-northeast for the Cleveland East Ledge Lighthouse, a white cylindrical tower on a red base. Keep it to starboard as you enter Cleveland Ledge Channel. Beyond the green #7 and red #8 buoy, watch to the northeast for a red #2 nun buoy that marks Southwest Ledge off Scraggy

Neck. Keep it to starboard and head for Red Brook Harbor. Okay … now that we’re all together, let’s head into

the harbor.You’ll find a red-and-green nun marking Eustis Rock, and

when you do, look to the southeast for the channel that’ll swing you around the southern end and extensive shoaling of Bassett’s Island. To the southeast is Hospital Cove (as in: “If you come in here with that boat, you’ll end up in the ...”). You’ll run a horseshoe pattern to buoys #10 and #11.

Once you’ve passed the tip of Long Point off to starboard, turn your eyes to the east. The Kingman Yacht Center has 235 slips and 130 moorings and a restaurant facing the sunsets over the harbor. Just to the south of Kingman’s is Parker’s Boat Yard. Check in with them for fuel, repairs and their marine store.

Cape Cod, ho! The local story is as good a place to start as any. After all, Cleveland Ledge is named for an American president who could find no better place to fish than the waters nearby. Check out Pairpoint glass and Grover Cleveland’s own Gray Gables train station, then explore the story of the canal you just cruised through.

Or didn’t. After all, it’s summer on Cape Cod, so it’s all up to you.

hyannis takes its name from Iyannough, a sachem with the Mattachiest

tribe that inhabited the area when the Pilgrims arrived. He was known for his warmth and courteousness among the settlers—traits that the people of Hyannis attempt to carry forward with their care for transient boaters today.

Hyannis is one of the seven villages of the town of Barnstable, and the Main Street of Cape Cod. It’s the perfect midway point between the Cape Cod Canal and the Cape Cod National Seashore, where the Kennedys found happiness sailing the cool waters of Nantucket Sound. A museum dedicated to the life of President John F. Kennedy can be found downtown, and a reflecting pool on Ocean Street overlooks the famed family compound.

Hyannis Harbor itself has long been an active port, both for cruisers and ferries shuttling day adventurers to Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. A new information center near the docks guides you to the nearby shops and restaurants, some within walking distance, and even to the Cape Cod Maritime Museum, which you can see when you come ashore.

Speaking of which, let’s get you dockside. To find Hyannis

Harbor from the west, split Horseshoe Shoal buoys No. 7 and No. 8, and watch for the red No. 2 buoy over Hodges Rock. Keep to the east of the rock by about 1,500 yards and watch to the northeast for a red-and-white bell buoy marked “HH” for, you guessed it, Hyannis Harbor. North of that, you’ll find the breakwater at the mouth of the harbor.

If you’re coming from the east, stay well clear of Point Gammon and its abandoned lighthouse, knowing that the approach can be exceedingly rocky. In fact, you’ll want to stay well south of Gazelle Rock, and even south of Hallett’s Rock to the south of that, which is, unfortunately, unmarked. Refer to your NOAA number 13237 chart for safety. Find that same “HH” buoy and the breakwater.

Hyannis Harbor divides its bountiful waterfront beauty with Lewis Bay, which makes up the northeast corner. It’s in the northwestern corner of the bay, though, where you’ll find your best chances of finding a place to tie up and step ashore.

The village of Hyannis bustles throughout the summer, with events large and small seemingly taking place every night. It’s also a gateway to the rest of Cape Cod, which is just waiting to be explored again and again, historically, naturally and culturally.

it took a world war to turn Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard into tourist destinations. And there’s no turning the clock back now. Here’s all you need to

know about approaching these amazing islands.Coming from southwest of Martha’s Vineyard, look for

the high, sandy bluffs known as Gay Head, marked by the brick Gay Head Lighthouse. Stay north of the green No. 31 buoy in the sound to steer clear of the Devil’s Bridge, which claimed the City of Columbus in 1884. The channel heads northeastward. Ride it around a green No. 27 marking the western end of the Middle Ground shoal area. Nine miles to the east-northeast, you’ll find the other, eastern end of that hazard, marked by a green-and-red can buoy. Find that, and you’ve found West Chop. Swing your way southward between West Chop and East Chop, and you’ve entered Vineyard Haven Harbor.

Next stop, Oak Bluffs. Leaving Vineyard Haven Harbor, roll to starboard around East Chop, and ease up on the throttle. Oak Bluffs will come up quickly, marked by jetties. Inside this small harbor, you’ll find the Oak Bluffs Marina, the largest marina on Martha’s Vineyard.

On to Edgartown Harbor! Cruise to the east-southeast for a red No. 2 bell buoy, heeding the green-and-red can buoy marking Squash Meadow to the north. The bell buoy will put you on the approach to Edgartown Harbor to the south. Follow the channel past No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6, keeping Cape Poge Light and the spit of sand known as Cape Poge Elbow to port as you go. Round the red No. 8 and head for the inner harbor, around Chappaquiddick Point.

To find Nantucket, take the green No. 1 bell buoy, marking a shipwreck off the east end of Tuckernuck Shoal, before making your move to the south-southeast. The channel that will take you into Nantucket Harbor will head to the southeast. The wide, arcing landform of Nantucket’s north shore will spread before you. A red-and-white bell buoy marked “NB” will guide you into the dredged channel into the harbor, past one of the island’s signature lighthouses at Brant Point. The Nantucket Boat Basin, stop number one for transient cruisers looking for friends on the Faraway Island, is on the western side of the harbor beyond those landmarks.

Walk up Main Street, grab a bench and let the celebrity watching begin. There’s nothing like summer on the islands!
