Sense of community is Cottonwood’s greatest strength Cottonwood, Arizona ”Heart

of the Verde Valley” -- Have you noticed that Cottonwood

continues to be in the news. Over the last few years, there have been an abundance of coverage on TV, in the newspapers, and countless magazine articles speaking to what a great place Cottonwood is to visit and to live.

This does not happen by accident but because of an ongoing collaboration and team effort between the City of Cottonwood, Old Town Association, the wine industry, and the business community through the Cottonwood Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber not only assists with promoting local businesses, it also works hard at promoting the Verde Valley as a great place to visit and live.

What makes Cottonwood so appeal-ing? What makes someone who visits here want to live here in our little corner of the world? Is it the moderate climate? The scenic and environmen-tal beauty? Is it the sense of commu-

nity and people who live here? I think it is all of the above. All of

these things contribute to the attrac-tiveness of Cottonwood and the Verde Valley, but in my opinion, none more than the sense of community and people who live here.

For many generations, people have chosen to make this place home, rais-ing families, building businesses, homes, schools, parks, ball fi elds and churches. Many have, and continue to contribute to making Cottonwood a special place.

So what can you do to help our growing small town to remain a spe-cial place and the Heart of the Valley? Simple, continue to foster the sense of community, remain that friendly civic oriented small town that we fi nd so special; by giving, volunteering your time, and supporting our schools, churches, youth sports, and local busi-nesses! When you shop local fi rst, you help create local jobs and you put more money into the community in which

It has been over a decade since John Marcus fi rst planted wine grapes in Echo Canyon, a side hollow off Oak Creek, down Page Springs Road.

It took a while for others to grasp the idea that wine grapes would fi nd the Verde formation’s mixture of mudstone and limestone, along with the diurnal temperature swings that defi ne the cen-tral highlands, were ideal for growing grapes.

Within a few years others joined

Marcus -- fi rst Ray and Ray Freitas planted a vineyard in Cottonwood. Th en Eric Glomski opened Page Springs Cel-lars down stream from Echo Canyon. Oak Creek Vineyards and Javalina Leap soon followed.

Today, there are vineyards up and down the Valley from Jerome to Camp Verde and more acreage being planted every year.

But it wasn’t until 2007, when Cotton-wood City Manager Doug Bartosh and

Economic Development Director Casey Rooney began looking for opportunities to grow their community that anyone put two and two together.

Looking for a way to revitalize Old Town, the two helped create the Verde Valley Wine Consortium. Th e consor-tium in turn helped bring tasting rooms to the downtown. And the rest as they say is history.

“We saw what was going on out in the country and after meeting with the winery owners Doug said to me, ‘Th is industry is going somewhere, and we need to help make it happen,’” says Rooney.

Today in Old Town there are fi ve tast-ing rooms and seven restaurants pouring local wines.

Together they are not only drawing thousands of visitor, they are serving as anchors for dozens of other businesses.

“Th e City of Cottonwood has embraced the wine industry and the industry has embraced us. Ninety-nine percent of the space in Old Town is now being utilized.

“We pride ourselves in being at the center. But we also see ourselves as a model for other communities wanting to help expand the industry and be a part of

it,” says Rooney.In addition to what’s happening down-

town, the wine biz has started a buzz uptown, specifi cally at the Verde Campus

of Yavapai College. Although technically in the corporate limits of Clarkdale, the school’s new enology and viticulture programs are furthering the cause and helping to establish the valley, and Cot-tonwood as the center of the state’s wine industry.

In November, Yavapai College offi -cially opened its new wine tasting room on the Verde Campus Friday. Th e tasting room is open to the public Th ursday to Sunday, noon to 6 p.m., and people can try and buy bottles of fi ve types of stu-dent-crafted wines: Viognier, Grenache, Syrah, Merlot and Petite Syrah. Th e col-lege wine center is a working model of a winery in Clarkdale with 12,000 vines planted on 12-acres of land and prepares students for jobs in the wine industry.Rooney estimates that the industry is nowhere near its potential.

“It a business that feeds on itself,” he says, “Success breeds success.”

In 2015, the Cottonwood adopted a new city logo declaring the city “The Heart of Arizona Wine Country.”

Cottonwood’s premier summer wine-centric event is the annual Tilted Earth Wine and Music Festival. The 2016 Tilted Earth event is scheduled for the weekend of June 16-18.


Cottonwood was estab-lished in 1879 and became incorporated in 1960.

Th e city is near the center of Arizona. It lies east of Mingus Mountain and the Black Hills in Yavapai County at the 3,300-foot elevation. Its loca-tion between Phoenix and Flagstaff makes it a thriving community.

Th e city serves as a center for professional services and manufacturing. Th ere are several dining as well as hotels and bed & breakfasts establishments.

Verde Valley Medical Center is one of the fi nest diagnos-tic and treatment centers in Northern Arizona. Th e hospi-tal is continually expanding in size and services.

Other major employers in the area include Cotton-wood-Oak Creek and Mingus Union High school districts and Verde Valley Medical Center, as well as Mold-in-Graphics and Salt River Mate-rials Group in nearby Clark-dale and Cliff Castle Casino near Camp Verde.

Th e travel and tourism industry is a signifi cant factor in Cottonwood’s economic profi le, and it’s not strictly retail business. National for-ests, state parks, national monuments and wilderness areas in the surrounding area attract hundreds of thousands of tourists each year.

Th e Verde River supports one of the state’s prime riparian habitats and fl ows through the center of Cotton-wood. Riverfront Park and Dead Horse Ranch State Park provide access to the Verde River greenway on opposite sides of the waterway.

Dead Horse Ranch State Park has undergone expan-sion in recent years. New lagoons have been created for increased water recreation and the RV capability and camping expanded. Th e park is home of the Verde Valley Birding & Nature Festival, one

of many annual events that incorporates nature and fun for the residents and visitors of the Verde Valley.

Mingus Mountain, at 7,700 feet, is a world-class mecca for hang gliding enthusiasts with regular weekend launches. Th e area is also popular for balloonists and skydivers. Of course, the spectacular Red Rocks of Sedona are always a visual lure.

Old Town Cottonwood has gone through a renewal and revival and is now alive with restaurants, art galleries and shops. In the summer a weekly farmers market is full of produce and fun. Th ere are numerous attractions and fairs, including Walkin’ on Main event.

Cottonwood annually hosts the free Fantastic Family Fourth of July, Verde River Days, Rhythm ‘n’ Ribs, a fall carnival, Chocolate Walk and the popular Christmas Parade

Th e city hosts a library, a new Recreation Center and aquatic facility, civic center, four parks, a movie theater, swimming pool, softball and Little League fi elds, soccer fi elds and tennis courts.

Th ere are also an abun-dance of senior facilities and retirement centers.

Th e Verde Campus of Yavapai College on the border with neighboring Clarkdale is a growing member of the community, off ering day and evening classes and voca-tional education. For four-

year higher education, North-ern Arizona University is in Flagstaff but off ers courses in association with the Commu-nity College.

Th e city is governed by a mayor, council and city man-ager. A professional police and fi re department is staff ed with full-time and reserve personnel.

Th e city is near Inter-state-17 accessible from Ari-zona State Route 89A and SR 260. From Phoenix, drive north to exit 287, then north-west on SR 260. From Flag-staff , drive south to exit 287 or drive through the magnifi cent Oak Creek Canyon on SR 89A, which travels south through Sedona and on to Cotton-wood.

Marcus -- fi rst Ray and Ray Freitas planted a vineyard in Cottonwood. Th en Eric Glomski opened Page Springs Cel-lars down stream from Echo Canyon. Oak Creek Vineyards and Javalina Leap soon followed.

Today, there are vineyards up and down the Valley from Jerome to Camp Verde and more acreage being planted every year.

But it wasn’t until 2007, when Cotton-wood City Manager Doug Bartosh and

Economic Development Director Casey Rooney began looking for opportunities to grow their community that anyone put two and two together.

Looking for a way to revitalize Old Town, the two helped create the Verde Valley Wine Consortium. Th e consor-tium in turn helped bring tasting rooms to the downtown. And the rest as they say is history.

“We saw what was going on out in the country and after meeting with the winery owners Doug said to me, ‘Th is industry is going somewhere, and we need to help make it happen,’” says Rooney.

Today in Old Town there are fi ve tast-ing rooms and seven restaurants pouring local wines.

Together they are not only drawing thousands of visitor, they are serving as anchors for dozens of other businesses.

“Th e City of Cottonwood has embraced the wine industry and the industry has embraced us. Ninety-nine percent of the space in Old Town is now being utilized.

“We pride ourselves in being at the center. But we also see ourselves as a model for other communities wanting to help expand the industry and be a part of

it,” says Rooney.In addition to what’s happening down-

town, the wine biz has started a buzz uptown, specifi cally at the Verde Campus

of Yavapai College. Although technically in the corporate limits of Clarkdale, the school’s new enology and viticulture programs are furthering the cause and helping to establish the valley, and Cot-tonwood as the center of the state’s wine industry.

In November, Yavapai College offi -cially opened its new wine tasting room on the Verde Campus Friday. Th e tasting room is open to the public Th ursday to Sunday, noon to 6 p.m., and people can try and buy bottles of fi ve types of stu-dent-crafted wines: Viognier, Grenache, Syrah, Merlot and Petite Syrah. Th e col-lege wine center is a working model of a winery in Clarkdale with 12,000 vines planted on 12-acres of land and prepares students for jobs in the wine industry.Rooney estimates that the industry is nowhere near its potential.

“It a business that feeds on itself,” he says, “Success breeds success.”

In 2015, the Cottonwood adopted a new city logo declaring the city “The Heart of Arizona Wine Country.”

Cottonwood’s premier summer wine-centric event is the annual Tilted Earth Wine and Music Festival. The 2016 Tilted Earth event is scheduled for the weekend of June 16-18.


Cottonwood was estab-lished in 1879 and became incorporated in 1960.

Th e city is near the center of Arizona. It lies east of Mingus Mountain and the Black Hills in Yavapai County at the 3,300-foot elevation. Its loca-tion between Phoenix and Flagstaff makes it a thriving community.

Th e city serves as a center for professional services and manufacturing. Th ere are several dining as well as hotels and bed & breakfasts establishments.

Verde Valley Medical Center is one of the fi nest diagnos-tic and treatment centers in Northern Arizona. Th e hospi-tal is continually expanding in size and services.

Other major employers in the area include Cotton-wood-Oak Creek and Mingus Union High school districts and Verde Valley Medical Center, as well as Mold-in-Graphics and Salt River Mate-rials Group in nearby Clark-dale and Cliff Castle Casino near Camp Verde.

Th e travel and tourism industry is a signifi cant factor in Cottonwood’s economic profi le, and it’s not strictly retail business. National for-ests, state parks, national monuments and wilderness areas in the surrounding area attract hundreds of thousands of tourists each year.

Th e Verde River supports one of the state’s prime riparian habitats and fl ows through the center of Cotton-wood. Riverfront Park and Dead Horse Ranch State Park provide access to the Verde River greenway on opposite sides of the waterway.

Dead Horse Ranch State Park has undergone expan-sion in recent years. New lagoons have been created for increased water recreation and the RV capability and camping expanded. Th e park is home of the Verde Valley Birding & Nature Festival, one

of many annual events that incorporates nature and fun for the residents and visitors of the Verde Valley.

Mingus Mountain, at 7,700 feet, is a world-class mecca for hang gliding enthusiasts with regular weekend launches. Th e area is also popular for balloonists and skydivers. Of course, the spectacular Red Rocks of Sedona are always a visual lure.

Old Town Cottonwood has gone through a renewal and revival and is now alive with restaurants, art galleries and shops. In the summer a weekly farmers market is full of produce and fun. Th ere are numerous attractions and fairs, including Walkin’ on Main event.

Cottonwood annually hosts the free Fantastic Family Fourth of July, Verde River Days, Rhythm ‘n’ Ribs, a fall carnival, Chocolate Walk and the popular Christmas Parade

Th e city hosts a library, a new Recreation Center and aquatic facility, civic center, four parks, a movie theater, swimming pool, softball and Little League fi elds, soccer fi elds and tennis courts.

Th ere are also an abun-dance of senior facilities and retirement centers.

Th e Verde Campus of Yavapai College on the border with neighboring Clarkdale is a growing member of the community, off ering day and evening classes and voca-tional education. For four-

year higher education, North-ern Arizona University is in Flagstaff but off ers courses in association with the Commu-nity College.

Th e city is governed by a mayor, council and city man-ager. A professional police and fi re department is staff ed with full-time and reserve personnel.

Th e city is near Inter-state-17 accessible from Ari-zona State Route 89A and SR 260. From Phoenix, drive north to exit 287, then north-west on SR 260. From Flag-staff , drive south to exit 287 or drive through the magnifi cent Oak Creek Canyon on SR 89A, which travels south through Sedona and on to Cotton-wood.
