car care - spring 2011
DESCRIPTION
The Spring 2011 edition of our Car Care special edition featuring tips and tricks on maintaining the life of your vehicle.TRANSCRIPT
(MS) -- Recentstudies have esti-mated that manyAmericans spend asmuch as three hoursa day in their cars.Over the course of atypical week, that'salmost one entireday behind thewheel. That not on-ly translates to lotsof face time withyour vehicle's inte-rior, but it also pro-vides ample oppor-tunities for thebuildup of dirt, grime, coffee, andfood stains that canleave a car's interiorappearing haggardand worn.In addition to rob-bing a car's interiorof its aesthetic ap-peal, the buildup ofdirt and grease canalso cause the vehi-cle to degrade overtime. Though it'scommon to associ-ate vehicle mainte-nance with what'sunder the hood, drivers should alsomake maintenancea priority for the ve-hicle's interior. When cleaning acar's interior, ad-dress each andevery nook andcranny.
• Consoles & CupHoldersPerhaps no part of avehicle's interior ismore susceptible todirt and greasebuildup than thecenter console, which is typicallyhome to a vehicle'scup holders. Spilledcoffee or soda issomething everydriver can relate to,and cleaning suchspills is harder thanit sounds. NoTouch® InteriorDetailing Mousse
from Permatex, aleading innovator ofauto maintenance, repair, and appear-ance products, isspecially formulat-ed to remove not on-ly stubborn stains, but also older ones, making it ideal fortaking care of thatlong-ignored yetunsightly residue atthe bottom of yourcupholder.
• Clean Under theCarpetsParticularly after along winter, a vehi-cle's carpets can be amajor eyesore.Remove the floormats and thorough-ly vacuum any dirtbuildup that mighthave multipliedwith each wintersnowstorm orspring shower. Yourcarpets will lookbetter and lastlonger.
• Dashboards &Door PanelsIn order to drive avehicle, motoristsmust look out overthe dashboard.Despite that, dash-boards are oftenoverlooked when itcomes to cleaning acar's interior. NoTouch® InteriorDetailing Mousse isformulated to re-move unsightly dirtor grease buildupfrom all interior sur-faces, includingplastic, rubber, vinyl, and leather, while drying to asatin sheen to mini-mize dashboard re-flection on thewindshield. What'sunique about NoTouch® InteriorDetailing Mousse isthat it applies as amousse, meaning
there won't be anyof the messy over-spray and seepageinto componentsand vents that driv-ers typically worryabout when clean-ing the dashboardand door panels.
• Address theUpholsteryWhen buying a newcar, many auto buy-ers are concernedabout the car's po-tential resale value. That's a genuineconcern, as resalevalue is often influ-enced by more thanjust the number ofmiles on the odome-ter. Dirty upholsteryis an instant turnofffor most used carbuyers, so driversshould be diligentand clean their up-holstery regularly, including immedi-ately after anyspills. Be carefulwhen using water toclean the uphol-stery, as you don'twant any water get-ting into places thatcan damamge elec-trical componentsor create a moldy
smell.
• PracticePreventitive CareMuch like humans,a car is susceptibleto UV rays.Whereas a humanwould apply sun-screen to his or herskin to protectagainst sunburn, drivers can apply aUV-protectantproduct to their ve-hicle's interior toguard against prob-lems that often re-sult from overexpo-sure to the sun. NoTouch® InteriorDetailing Mousse isspecially formulat-ed to protect a vehi-cle against UV raysthat typically lead to
fading, cracking, and aging. What'smore, its non-greasy formulaleaves surfaces witha film-free finish, ensuring the car'sinterior will lookand feel like newwithout sufferingany harmful side ef-fects of sun expo-sure. No Touch®Interior DetailingMousse also has ananti-static repellant, which helps keepthe instrument pan-el free and clear ofdust for safer andeasier navigation.• Overcome theOdorMasking odors isanother concern formany vehicle own-
ers. While somespring days are idealfor rolling down thewindows, springshowers are often aforce to be reckonedwith during thespring season. Fordrivers trapped in-side a car with itsown distinct odor,No Touch® InteriorDetailing Moussehas a new car scentthat ensures bothdriver and passen-ger won't be stuckholding their noseson those long com-mutes to work. For more informa-tion, visit:www.permatex.com.SC113747

(MS) -- With theeconomy on therebound after thecountry's worst fi-nancial times indecades, many asmart vehicleowner is lookingto get more bangfor their vehiclebuck. In lieu ofquick trade-ins,more and more ve-hicle owners areapplying the les-sons they learnedfrom the recessionto their vehiclesand trying to maketheir purchaseslast longer.
According to the
automotive ex-perts at the non-profit NationalInstitute forAutomotiveServiceExcellence (ASE),today's vehiclesare designed withlong-lasting relia-bility in mind, making it easierfor vehicle ownersto get more andmore out of theirvehicle purchase. To do just that, consider the fol-lowing tips cour-tesy of ASE.
• Find a repairshop that suitsyour needs.Motorists oftencite the difficultyin finding a reli-able mechanicthey feel they cantrust. A courteousstaff that's willingto answer yourquestions is a goodstarting point, as isa shop that's dis-playing the ASEsign or logo, whichindicates the shopemploys certified
technicians. Also, check the shopwalls for any pastcommendations, including civic, community or cus-tomer serviceawards.
It's also a goodidea to check whatvehicles the me-chanics are cur-rently working on.If the vehicles inthe parking lot areequal in value toyour own, that's agood sign.
• Do the smallthings to save fuel. The cost of fuel isamong the highestcosts associatedwith owning a ve-hicle. But smallthings like ensur-ing tires are prop-erly inflated, re-placing misfiringspark plugs andeven clearing thetrunk of clutter canall increase fuel ef-ficiency and helpyour bottom line inthe process.
• Give your en-gine a break. Cars
aren't all that dif-ferent from the hu-man body in thateverything is di-rectly or indirectlyconnected as a sys-tem. Just like abody can over-compensate in onearea when anotherarea is injured, acar's engine will beforced to over-compensate whenthere are deficien-cies in other areas. For example, aclogged air filteror fouled sparkplug makes com-bustion less effi-cient, which re-duces power -- andwastes fuel aswell. Motoristscan give their en-gine a break by re-placing cloggedfilters, sticking totheir vehicle main-tenance scheduleand routinelychecking fluid lev-els.

New, Easy Solution Restores Vehicle Paint to "Like-New" Condition
(MS) -- Thoughwe're only one fulldecade into the21st century, theamount of changethat has takenplace in those 10years is phenome-nal. Whereas theInternet was large-ly seen as some-thing to play with adecade ago, it nowserves to pay ourbills, stay in touchwith friends andeven order ourmovie tickets ormeals. But how we liveour lives isn't theonly way thingshave changed inthe last 10 years. How we treat ourvehicles has alsochanged dramati-cally. Much of theconventional wis-dom preached byour fathers andgrandfathers withrespect to vehiclemaintenance hasfallen by the way-side in the 21stcentury, as manu-facturers of both
vehicles and vehi-cle maintenanceproducts havechanged the waythey do business.AMSOIL INC.,
the industry leaderin synthetic motoroil, notes thatmany of thesechanges cannotonly improve howour vehicles run,but save us somecash as well.• Petroleum motoroils are no longerthe gold standard. Many vehicle
owners practicethe same credowith respect to ve-hicle maintenance. That is, "If it hasworked in the past,
stick with it."Advancements inautomotive tech-nology, however, have led many toabandon that cre-do, or at least tomodify it.Perhaps no tech-nological ad-vancement hasdone more tochange how weview vehiclemaintenance thanthe emergence ofsynthetic motor oilas a superior alter-native to tradition-al petroleum mo-tor oil. Once theindustry standard, petroleum motoroils' well-earnedreputation forforming sludge, gums and varnish-es as they breakdown has led in-dustry insiders andeven weekend carenthusiasts to em-brace syntheticmotor oils.
Because of theirability to resist thestresses of hightemperature oxi-dation and evapo-ration loss, syn-
thetic motor oilsare far more resist-ant to sludge anddeposit formation, enabling vehicleengines to runmore smoothlyand offer greaterfuel efficiency.• Cars can crackthe 100,000 milebarrier and still bereliable. Duringthe recession of2009, many vehi-cle owners beganlooking at theircars and trucks asmore long-term in-vestments.Whereas the yearsleading up to therecession sawmany vehicleowners tradingtheir cars in afterthree or fouryears, the post-re-cession vehicleowner now wantsmore bang for his
buck.Fortunately, it'snow entirely pos-sible to keep a carrunning strong for100,000 miles or
more. And manyof the keys to do-ing so don't requirea trip to the me-chanic. With theadvancements inengine design, breakthroughs inengine metallurgyand the use of syn-thetic lubricants, motorists are nowkeeping their vehi-cles 24 percentlonger than theywere in 2002.Money not spenton new vehicles ismoney in thepocket. • The vehiclemaintenance in-dustry wants tokeep your car onthe road. In thepast year or so,much of Americagot its first realglimpse into theAmerican auto in-dustry, and many
did not like whatthey saw. Popularauto lines Pontiacand Saturn werediscontinued, andconsumer confi-dence in Americanauto makers con-tinued to wane. One overlookedelement, however, was the positiveadvancementsmade in the vehi-cle maintenanceindustry. Syntheticmotor oils, for ex-ample, greatly en-hance a vehicle'sperformance. Theuniform molecularstructure of syn-thetic oil helps en-gines operate moreefficiently by re-ducing friction andwear, improvingperformance in ex-treme tempera-tures and, best ofall, by improvingfuel economy. Sowhile convention-al wisdom mightinfer the auto in-dustry has re-gressed during the21st century, theadvancementsmade in automo-tive maintenancetechnology haveenabled vehiclesto perform betterand last muchlonger, helpingdrivers save mon-ey while restoringtheir peace ofmind. For more informa-tion, visitwww.amsoil.com.SC113746

While some eco-
friendly behaviors
and lifestyle changes
have been easy to
adopt, others have
proven far more diffi-
cult. Perhaps nothing
illustrates that more
than consumer reac-
tion to hybrid cars.
Hybrid car sales have
dipped in recent
years. But supporters
note that vehicle sales
in general have also
decreased over that
period, meaning it's
quite possible hybrid
car sales are indica-
tive of a larger slump,
and not necessarily
indicative of an ad-
verse consumer reac-
tion to hybrid cars.
Whatever the reason
for dwindling sales,
it's clear consumers
have been reticent to
embrace hybrid cars,
especially when com-
pared to other eco-
friendly lifestyle
changes that have
caught on seemingly
en masse. For those
considering a hybrid
car, there's a valid
case to be made on
both sides of the
fence.
Why Buy a Hybrid
Car?
Buying a car is never
an easy decision.
Choosing to buy one
that's fundamentally
different that one
you've ever pur-
chased before is even
more difficult.
Perhaps there's no
greater reason to buy
a hybrid car than the
environmental bene-
fits. A hybrid's low
emissions mean less
greenhouse gases,
which can include
harmful carbon diox-
ide. Less emissions
make for a healthier
planet. For con-
sumers whose chief
concern is the envi-
ronment, then hybrid
cars are the way to go.
There's also more
practical reasons to
buy a hybrid car.
Better gas mileage
means drivers will be
paying less at the
pump, which can add
up to significant sav-
ings over time, not to
mention less fuel con-
sumption that will
help the environment
as well.
Hybrid cars also tend
to be more efficient.
Hybrids have both an
internal combustible
engine and an electri-
cal system, enabling
drivers to switch back
and forth between the
power sources to
make their vehicle
more efficient, burn-
ing less fuel when the
conditions allow and
using less electrical
energy when the con-
ditions would other-
wise drain the electri-
cal power system.
Why Steer Clear of
Hybrid Cars?
Hybrid cars' biggest
problems are largely
economical. Resale
value of hybrid cars
pales in comparison
to that of traditional
automobiles. Much
of this lower resale
value is thanks to the
battery needed for hy-
brid cars. Hybrid car
batteries typically
need to be replaced
once per decade.
When selling a pre-
owned vehicle, driv-
ers might find that ve-
hicle is less attractive
to prospective buyers
if that battery has not
previously been re-
placed or if it's been
several years since it
was replaced.
Lower resale value is
especially tough to
stomach when con-
sidering the initial
cost of hybrid cars,
which many feel
makes them less at-
tractive options.
Hybrids are often
considerably more
expensive, and re-
searchers have noted
that the cost savings
of hybrids are not re-
alized until after sev-
eral years of driving a
hybrid vehicle. While
this figures to change
as the market contin-
ues to offer more hy-
brid cars, for today's
consumer that future
offers little comfort.
Safety is also a con-
cern when consider-
ing a hybrid car.
Hybrids use high-
voltage batteries to
operate, which can
prove disastrous
should an accident
occur. Manufacturers
insist this concern is-
n't really a problem,
as the batteries are de-
signed to turn off in
an accident.
However, some con-
sumers subscribe to
the "better safe than
sorry" approach and
feel hybrid batteries
are simply too risky.
Much like any big
ticket decision, con-
sumers must make,
deciding whether or
not to buy a hybrid
car requires careful
consideration of the
advantages and dis-
advantages to hybrid
cars before driving
one off the dealership
lot. TF112382

Is a Hybrid Car the Right Fit for You?
Before purchasing a hybrid vehicle, motorists shouldweight the advantages of disadvantages of hybrids to en-sure the car meets their needs.
Many motorists be-moan the myriadcosts associatedwith owning a vehi-cle. According tothe NationalAutomobileDealersAssociation, the av-erage price for anew car in theUnited States isslightly more than$28,000. But as anyvehicle ownerknows, that stickerprice is only the be-ginning. The cost ofmaintaining a vehi-cle and keeping it onthe road is not ex-actly insignificant. As the economy be-gins to rebound, agood percentage ofmotorists have re-solved to keep theirvehicles on the roadlonger in an effort tostretch their auto-mobile dollars.
That's a sound reso-lution, and one thatis not necessarilydifficult to accom-plish. Contrary topopular belief, carsare built to last, andit's often a driver'spoor habits that re-duce a car's life ex-pectancy as op-posed to the vehiclemanufacturer'sproduct. Driverscan lengthen a vehi-cle's lifespan by em-ploying preventivemaintenance thatshould keep a carrunning strong foryears to come.
• Air Filter
When examiningthe vehicle's air fil-ter (check the vehi-cle manual for loca-tion), look for dirt ordust buildup. If thefilter is filthy, sim-ply replace it. Auto
parts stores sell airfilters, and mostdrivers shouldn'thave trouble replac-ing a filter by them-selves. A dirty airfilter can negativelyeffect fuel economyand make it seem asthough a vehicle isconstantly goinguphill in a stiffwind. When a dirtyair filter is replaced, drivers will noticean instant impact inhow the car drivesand are likely tosave a few dollars atthe filling station aswell.
• Belts and Hoses
Issues with belts orhoses are often rec-ognizable to thenaked eye, regard-less of a driver's au-tomotive skill. Ahose in poor condi-tion can appearbulging or brittle, and should not feeltoo soft or too hard.If a hose exhibitsany of these symp-toms, replace it. Abelt that's worn orfrayed should alsobe replaced.
• Brake Fluid
One of the more ex-pensive repair jobson a vehicle is to re-place the brakes.Brakes will need tobe replaced over thecourse of a vehicle'slifespan, but driversshould routinelycheck the vehicle'sbrake fluid. Withoutsufficient brake flu-
id, the brakes' lifes-pan decreases dra-matically. Checkingthe brake fluid iseasy; simply look inthe owner's manualto find brake fluidreservoir and re-move the lid (somevehicles might re-quire the lid be un-screwed). The reser-voir will likely haveinstructions on theinside advising howmuch brake fluidshould be added. Ifthe fluid is belowthe line of demarca-tion, add fluid up tothat line. But becareful not to over-fill. Check the brakefluid levels on amonthly basis.
• Motor Oil
Oil change guide-lines have changeddramatically thanksto better cars andmore reliable motoroils. But it still helpsto check motor oillevels after everyfill up. If motor oillevels are low, addmore oil. If oil issignificantly low af-ter each fill up, con-sult a mechanic justto be safe.
• Exhaust
Once a year, be it ata routine tune up orshould repair workbe necessary, askyour mechanic tocheck the vehicle'semissions. Failingan emissions testmight be against thelaw, and a failed test
could be indicativeof a larger problem. In addition, inspectthe muffler and ex-haust pipe for holes, particularly afterwinter, when debrisfrom snow trucksmay do significantdamage. Replaceany damaged orrusted parts.
• Power Steering
Power steering fluidshould also be in-spected on a month-ly basis. Whenchecking powersteering fluid, alsoinspect the pump forany leaks.
• Tires
Keeping tires prop-erly inflated paysnumerous divi-dends. Properly in-flated tires make iteasier for the engineto operate, loweringfuel costs while alsodecreasing wearand tear on the en-gine. The owner'smanual should list arecommended tirepressure, and the lo-cal filling station
likely has an airpump.Maintaining tiresalso involveschecking for wearand tear. Unevenwear could indicatethe tires are mis-aligned. Discussthis with your me-chanic.
• Transmission Fluid
When checkingtransmission fluid,do so while the caris running and afterthe engine haswarmed up. Preventive Maintenance toKeep Your Car on the Road
Vehicle owners who practice easy, routine maintenancecan often add years to their vehicle's life.
www.argusobserver.com
Depreciation is a
major factor in buy-
ing and selling a vehi-
cle. The average auto
can lose 30 percent of
its value after the first
year. After three years
-- the duration of
most leases -- the
car's value may have
decreased by as much
as 50 percent. Those
looking to sell or
trade-in cars will
need to emphasize
maintenance to get
the most for their ve-
hicle.
There are ways to
reduce a vehicle's de-
preciation and im-
prove its resale value,
whether selling to a
private buyer or trad-
ing in the auto to a
dealership.
1. Buy the "right"
car in the first place.
Some models and
brands simply hold
their value better than
others. Dealerships
will promote this fact
when attempting to
sell a car. Choosing
these types of vehi-
cles can mean a better
resale value later on.
2. Keep geography
in mind. A convert-
ible won't be as popu-
lar in Alaska as it will
be in southern
Florida. Don't buy a
vehicle that goes
against the norm in a
particular geographic
area. Otherwise, sell-
ers will be left with a
car with little resale
value.
3. Stick to standard
colors. Fad colors,
such as lime green or
bright orange, may
turn heads, but they'll
be harder to find buy-
ers for later on. This
could reduce the ask-
ing price for the vehi-
cle when it comes
time to sell.
4. Choose the right
upgrades. A fancy
stereo system or top-
of-the-line naviga-
tion system won't
necessarily add value
to the vehicle.
However, leather
seats, a sunroof and
an automatic trans-
mission are popular
among buyers.
5. Maintain the ve-
hicle. Keep records of
maintenance that
show the car was well
cared for. Follow
manufacturers' main-
tenence schedules for
oil changes and tire
rotation, among other
things.
6. Trade in like for
like. A seller may get
a better trade-in rate
on a used car if he or
she is buying the
same make in the new
vehicle. For example,
a Chevrolet dealer-
ship may offer a bet-
ter trade-in price for
that old Malibu if the
owner is looking at a
new Traverse.
Keep in mind that if
a buyer is thinking
about keeping a car
until it's racked up
tons of miles and is
generally older than
dust, depreciation
values really won't
matter much. In those
instances, he or she
should simply pur-
chase the car liked the
best. FC10A964

Today's drivers face
more distractions
than ever before.
Technological gadg-
ets from smart phones
to MP3 players give
drivers new reasons
to look away from the
road.
Distracted driving is
any activity a person
engages in that can
distract him or her
from the primary task
of driving. There are
three main types of
distraction:
1. Visual:Taking eyes
off the road.
2. Cognitive: Not
thinking about what
you're doing.
3. Manual: Taking
hands off the wheel.
Distracted driving
may include talking
on a cell phone, eat-
ing food in the car,
thumbing through the
maps on a GPS de-
vice, or even chang-
ing the radio station.
But the type of dis-
tracted driving that
has become an epi-
demic, particularly
among younger driv-
ers, is texting while
driving.
The National
Highway Traffic
Safety
Administration says
that 20 percent of in-
jury crashes in 2009
involved reports of
distracted driving.
The age group with
the greatest propor-
tion of distracted
drivers was the un-
der-20 age group. As
texting has become
the preferred method
of communication, a
large percentage of
automobile accidents
might be due to tex-
ting.
When driving, the
safest bet is to refrain
from any activity that
takes one's eyes,
hands or mind away
from the road. If an-
swering a cell phone
or working with an-
other device is neces-
sary, drivers should
pull over to the side of
the road and take care
of what they need to
do. SC113538
