Develop a marketing plan that includes the following:New promotions every 60 days that will reward thecustomer with an incentive. For example, free carwash, free air freshener, free coffee or soda, freeinterior cleaning towel. Having special days fordifferent customers such as ladies day, senior citizensday, or graduation day can prove to be very effectivein generating new and return business. Have afundraiser for a specific community cause. Forinstance, raise money for the local high schoolfootball team uniforms or for any charity like Habitatfor Humanity.

Expecting something new every 60 days will trainyour customers to watch what you do and that youwill reward them for being customers. This will improve the frequency of visits they give toyour sites. Tracking your customers and how oftenthey visit is good information to keep. Use this

information to send them thank you notes, birthday cards and other specials that you are running. Ifthey haven’t visited in a while, invite them back with a free wash.

Constantly promoting your wash will deliver yourcustomers to your site and they will respond witheach campaign you market.

There are three distinct categories of car washes to consider

In-Bay Automatics

This type of car wash offers the consumer the ability to gettheir vehicle washed without having to leave the comfort oftheir vehicle. Once the consumer pays and pulls their vehicleinto the wash bay the machine automatically washes thevehicle by using a combination of brushes and/or, highpower water spray and chemicals. Automatic wash baystypically generate much greater revenue than self servewashes. Wash sites can also utilize combinations of self-serve and automatics to appeal to every type of consumer.

Self Service

Self-serve facilities are facilities that provide washequipment to consumers who prefer to wash their vehiclesthemselves. The facilities typically have bays with high-pressure wash wands. A selector is used by the consumer to allow for various types of wash products to be dispensedand used on the vehicle being washed. This equipment istypically coin operated however several vendors such asRyko also offer code generated or credit means of systemactivation for self service bays. Self-serve car washes drawa wide range of customers from all age groups and incomelevels and attract men and women alike.

6

When selecting the type of equipment that best suitsyour needs there are a number of factors to take intoconsideration when making this very important decision.

Some of the important factors that must be taken into consideration include:

• Price

• Quality of the wash being provided

• Wash menu options available with the equipment to be ordered.

• Cost per wash (chemicals, water, labor, utilities, etc.)

• Estimated wash volume

• Ancillary equipment that needs to be ordered

• Longevity of equipment design

• Bay length compatibility with new equipment

• Financing options available for the purchase of the equipment

• Competing locations

• Installation time

• Compatibility with other manufacturers ancillary products (i.e. activation systems and dryers).

Conveyor or Tunnel

Conveyors use brushes, high-power water sprayalong with chemicals to clean vehicles. Thesefacilities are also often referred to as conveyors due to the fact that once the consumer enters theirvehicle into the wash a conveyor system moves the vehicle through the wash.

There are two main types of conveyors. Someconveyors provide the consumer with an exterioronly wash. These tunnels may wash up to 100 carsper hour and are ideal for high-volume locationswhere a fast wash is of the essence (drivers normallyremain in their vehicles). Full-service tunnels not onlyclean the vehicle exterior but also provide interiorvehicle services such a vacuuming etc. This type offacility can wash 50-60 cars per hour.

Equipment selection is a critical partof the decision making process whendeveloping a car wash location.Demographics, traffic count, types of vehicles in your area, andcompetitive car washes are allfactors that will play an importantrole in deciding on the type of carwash that best suits your needs.Price and equipment longevity isimportant as well, especially whendetermining the best overall return on invest for your site.

Financing of the car wash project can impact this ability togenerate revenue in a number of ways. Many investors in thecar wash business do not wish or are unable to fund their owndevelopment and build out costs for a car wash. Therefore, these investors will look to one or more of a combination offinancing options. The basic options for financing a car washinvestment are bank loans, including SBA loans, equipmentleasing or profit sharing arraignments. Each method of financinghas it’s own advantages and disadvantages and most becarefully studied to determine which is right for each investor.

Ryko has developed various financial tools to assist investors intrying to put numbers behind the many variables that couldimpact a potential car wash site. These tools can help aninvestor discover if a business will generate the income neededto cover costs and to be successful.

Ryko’s electronic Car Wash Pro Forma and Car Wash ROI toolsare two such tools that will give an investor an indicator as to

whether a car wash is a good fit for his/her investment plans. These and other financial tools provided by Ryko are based onfindings gathered through over three decades of car washindustry research and experience. The results an investorreceives from these tools are based on real-world findings asopposed to “industry standards” and give a good indication ofthe direction a potential investment may go.

The areas you will need to become anexpert at to run a car wash efficiently are:Customer Service, Personnel Management,Marketing, Minor Repairs, Maintenanceand Inventory Control.

You are in the customer service business that happens towash cars. How you care for your customers will determineyour success. If you look after them with concern for thequality and their experience at your location, then you willbe successful. If you run the business remotely and rely on others to reflect the image you want, you must docomplete training of your staff to ensure that yourcustomer service message is implemented every day. From the time the customer enters your location to thetime they leave, you want them to have a positiveexperience.

A clean lot, friendly staff, working equipment, goodsignage, easy flow of customer traffic and last but definitelynot least a clean dry car will impress the customer.

Personnel management is a very critical part of your washoperation. You will need to manage your labor costs, asthey can be the most expensive category that you willhave. For tunnel or conveyor washes, you will need todetermine how many people it will take to run youroperation. Many factors will play a part in this based on the business model you use for the conveyor.

If it is a full service location, you may need a staff of 25-35.If you operate an exterior only wash, the staffing may be asfew as 6-12 people. If you run express wash type, 3-8people may be sufficient depending on the amount ofservice you offer the customer.

For in bay automatics, your labor requirement is greatlyreduced. You will need 1-3 part time people to manage the operation and make sure that the wash is functioningcorrectly and that the site is clear of trash.

brochure12.qxd 7/14/2006 8:52 AM Page 8

For self-service car washes, you will need to have 1-3 people on staff and most can

be part time people. Consider having a full time person on the weekends. This will

provide great customer service that will keep your customers happy and spending

more time and money at your site. The rest of the week, you will need someone to

clean up the bays and the property twice a day.

16 9

The critical part of defininga car wash as a success isthe profit generating abilityof that car wash site. Thereare dozens of variables thatwill go into determiningwhether a car wash issuccessful, everything frompricing to site appearancecan impact the car wash’sability to generate andsustain profitable revenuestreams..

f i n a n c i a l s

Making sure that the equipment is functioning correctlyand you are properly stocked with vending items willhelp the locations sales too. Besides the labor function, you will need to be very aware of how to operate yourequipment, do small repairs and keep a mindful eye onthe quality of wash that you are giving the customer. Ifyou review your location everyday from the perspectiveof the customers view point, then you will have a greatdeal of success.

To keep your expenses of operation in check you willneed to keep the car wash equipment operating at alltimes so that your customers can have a positiveexperience each time they visit.

There will be times when something happens and youmust shut down. In most cases, it can be a minor itemthat you or your staff should be trained to handle. Theability to maintain your equipment will make a bigdifference in how you are perceived by your customersand potential customers.

15

As in most businesses, locationis the key factor for the viablesuccess of the car washoperation. Many factors add upto determine if a location isviable for a car wash operation. These include manyconsiderations including speed limits, surroundingbusinesses and the distance to the nearestcompetitor.

A potential car wash site should be of ample size to

accommodate the car wash, vehicle staging areas,

vehicle travel, vacuum islands and any other car care

service desired. The site should also be able to

provide your facility with maximum visibility, easy

access to the equipment and customer safety. Easy

ingress and egress are essential.

14

s i t e p l a n d r a w i n g s

11

When selecting a site for a car wash, try to visualize thelocation as a prospective customer would. If cars liningup at a traffic light block the entrance to the wash, acustomer may turn away. High speed limits on thestreets fronting the location may discourage somedrivers from even attempting to come in.

While many other factors are important, none is morecritical than choosing the correct location to supportyour car wash operation. The different methods ofretailing various products have changed dramaticallyover the years but two of the most important elements, visibility and accessibility, remain the same. Assistance insite selection can be essential for a successful business.Ryko has helped virtually thousands of customers withsite selection. In the process, valuable insight andknowledge has been gathered in this critical phase ofsuccessful car wash planning.

When doing a site evaluation, many criteria are factored into the equation. These include: • Traffic Counts • Speed limits • Accessibility • Neighborhood • Visibility • Customer Base

Most site evaluations deal with the physical aspects ofthe prospective location: Speed limits, the location ofstop lights and turn lanes curb cuts that allow customerseasy ingress and egress in and out of the site, lot sizeand surrounding structures. When used in conjunctionwith a demographic study, all of these factors can beevaluated in order to give a prospective car washoperator a realistic view of the viability of the proposedcar wash location.

brochure12.qxd 7/14/2006 8:55 AM Page 14

A demographic study can be used to helpdetermine if a proposed location cansupport a car wash by providing informationregarding the area surrounding the site andthe people who reside there.

A demographic study will also helpdetermine your trade area and theconcentration of potential customers andcompetition within that trade area. A studyof your proposed trade area will help youdetermine the number of potentialcustomers versus the number of competitivewashes within a trade radius. These studieswill help you determine if there are enoughcustomers in the trade area to make youroperation a success.

12 13

A demographic study is animportant tool in the analysis ofa potential car wash location. Ademographic study can includeimportant information thatdirectly impacts the businesssite, it will give you a great dealof information includingpopulation, income perhousehold, traffic counts andalso will give estimates as tofuture trends for the area.
