Installing AutoPLANT on a 64 bit OS

Disclaimers :

This blog is due to many requests. Although it is not officially supported, perhaps it is better we suggest how

to make it work and then monitor feedback. With that said, AutoPLANT is supported and therefore if

something does not work on 64 bit, you need to run the same feature on a 32 bit installation to see if the

issue is a 64 bit problem or a 32 bit problem. If the problem persists on a 32 bit OS, then please log it with

our Technical Support Group (TSG).

Information : I am running AutoPLANT 8.11.6.30 on AutoCAD 2008 on Windows 7 64 bit, with Office 2007.

I have 8GB RAM as I often load large models.

1.0 : Install ORCA

Orca is a Microsoft application which allows you to edit msi packages.

Information : There should be no problems installing Orca.

2.0 : Install a 32 bit version of AutoCAD.

Warning : So far AutoCAD 2009 & 2010 installers have taken additional steps to prevent installation and

execution on a 64 bit OS. Therefore everything that follows was carried out on AutoCAD 2008.

Information : I attempted to follow the AutoCAD 2009 installation instructions for installing AutoCAD 2009

on a 64 bit OS. However, while it installed there were multiple issues when launching AutoCAD, hence my

abandonment. If anyone has managed to do this without having downstream issues, then let me know and I

will publish the instructions here.

2.1 : Locate an AutoCAD installation

2.2 Navigate to the .msi location, mine was in

H:\Installs\Autodesk\2008en\AdminImage

2.3 : Right mouse click and select Edit with Orca

You will see a list of tables (AutoCAD2008 has 111)

The only one we are interested in is the LaunchCondition table

2.4 Select the line which has 64 mentioned and press the Delete key.

2.5 : Confirm the warning which states you are about to permanently delete the row

2.6 : Exit Orca

2.7 : Run AutoCAD setup and install AutoCAD to your preferred location

2.8 : Launch AutoCAD and ensure it runs and is licensed

Warning : AutoCAD 32 bit on a 64 bit OS is not supported. Therefore if you have an AutoCAD problem you

will need to check if the same problem persists on the 32 bit AutoCAD on a 32 bit OS.

3.0 : Install Office 2007

Information : Not expected to be a problem

4.0 : Install ProjectWise

Information : If you are installing ProjectWise now is the time to install it. If you are installing ProjectWise

Navigator then you will need to install ProjectWise Explorer after you install Navigator as well.

Warning : ProjectWise does not work well with Office 2007 on my system. Could be something else, but it

very rarely opens an Office document and load it correctly. Generally I have to always check it out first. Then I

have to Open the document. If this does not load correctly, then I have to navigate to the dms folder and

open the document from there. Save it and check it back in through ProjectWise Explorer.

While I use ProjectWise on a daily basis, this is not with AutoPLANT and tends to be with Office documents

for our daily business.

5.0 : Install AutoPLANT P&ID

5.1 : Download the Select Release required. I am using the 08.11.06.30 release.

5.2 : Run the appid08110630en.exe

5.3 : Accept the C:\BentleyDownloads\appid08110630en location (or make a note of where the save location

is)

5.4 : Wait for the files to be expanded

5.5 : On the Welcome screen click Cancel (yes confirm and click Finish)

5.6 : Navigate to the C:\BentleyDownloads\appid08110630en\install folder

5.7 : Right mouse click on the P&ID V8i.msi and select Edit with Orca

5.8 : Select the LaunchCondition table

5.9 : Select the NOT VersionNT64 row and press Delete

5.10 : Yes confirm you want to remove the row

5.11 : Exit Orca

5.12 : Run setup.exe and install P&ID

6.0 : Install PDW

Information : this is exactly the same as P&ID with the .msi being called "AutoPLANT Plant Design V8i

(SELECTseries 1)"

7.0 : Install ProjectWise Navigator

I run all of my reviews and animations through Navigator. There is nothing to do. Install Navigator. It runs

great on a 64 bit OS and benefits from the extra headroom (although is not a full 64 bit application) .

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------

General

Issues

1.0 Project Administrator crashes when I exit, and it does not seem to matter which project I select, as soon

as I select a project, it will crash when I exit. However, with that said it crashes after all my changes have been

made, as there used to be a crash on a 32 bit OS which broke the DICT tables. I have not noticed any issues

related to this crash it seems to behave as I expect other than the crash on exit.

2.0 Windows 7.0 works much better when I am an Administrator. I run a workstation with UAC turned OFF

and a laptop with UAC enabled. Originally I had to run Vision and other applications as an Administrator, but

since I have turned off UAC I do not have these issues.

Observations

1.0 : I used to run all of the applications on Vista 64 bit and had the same issues, as those above and Vista

with UAC disabled was a very likeable and stable system. That system was much more stable than Windows

XP 32 bit which regularly had me doing some kind of maintenance or re-install.

2.0 : I have used P&ID / Piping / Equipment / ProSteel / DataManager / Datasheets / I&W to produce

benchmark and other datasets with 0 issues. If there have been issues with AutoPLANT, these have been

reproduceable in a 32 bit environment (and I have a VM for this purpose).

Hope the above is useful. However, this is for Bentley users benefits, so if you want to add an observation or

note, then please do so. This should not remain a static posting, but I hope with your help we can enhance

the information provided here.
