The origin of the name “Hawthorne” is not definite. It was either named after the author, Nathaniel Hawthorne, or because of the abundance of Hawthorne bushes.

The main avenue, Lafayette Ave., is named after the French commander since he stayed in the territory when helping assist in the American Revolution.

It was originally part of the now-defunct Manchester Township, which was later subdivided to create Hawthorne, Haledon, North Haledon, Prospect Park, Totowa and most of the First Ward of Paterson.
