What is carbon footprint?
A carbon footprint is a measure of the impact our activities
have on the environment, and in particular climate change.
It relates to the amount of greenhouse gases produced in our
day-to-day lives through burning fossil fuels for electricity, heating and transportation etc.

Myown carbon footprint.
y My personal Carbon Footprint is 4.32 tonnes of CO2
equivalent per annum* The global sustainable limit is 2
tonnes per annum.
y
In other words, the Earth would require 9.28 more treesevery year to balance the additional burden of my lifestyle
choices**

A carbon footprint is made up of the sum of two parts,
the primary footprint (shown by the green slices of the
pie chart) and the secondary footprint (shown as the
yellow slices).
1. The primary footprint is a measure of our direct
emissions of CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels
including domestic energy consumption and
transportation (e.g. car and plane). We have direct
control of these.
2. The secondary footprint is a measure of the
indirect CO2 emissions from the whole lifecycle of
products we use - those associated with their
manufacture and eventual breakdown. To put it very
simply the more we buy the more emissions will becaused on our behalf.

Why shouldyou knowyour carbon
footprint?
y Carbon footprint refers to the amount of greenhouse
gas(GHG) emissions.
y GHG affect earths ability to retain heat and results in global
warming which results in climate change.y Thus knowing ones greenhouse emission via carbon
footprint, will be the first step towards emission reductions
and climate-change impact

Why is it called carbon footprint?Since among the 6 identified gases, themost important and common of all is C02 although it has
GWP(Global warming potential) of 1, it is released from all day-
to-day activities. So it is called so

Howto calculate it?
3 simple steps-
1)Go visit this link http://www.no2co2.in/CarbonCalculator.php
(This specifically measures according to Indian standards)
2)Answer a few simple questions about your day today activities.3)Your CF score will be sent to you by mail.
Now all that is left is to work on ways
to reduce it.

How is it calculatedy The procedure used to calculate your Carbon Footprint complies with
the Guidelines (2006) of the Intergovernmental Panel on ClimateChanges (IPCC), for National Greenhouse Gas (GHG) EmissionsInventories. As far as possible, India-specific GHG emissionscoefficients are used in the calculations.
y Each activity and lifestyle choice impacts Carbon Footprint in manyways simultaneously. These impacts can be classified in a 3-tier
hierarchy comprising of1)primary -resulting from direct activity or consumption.
2)secondary-arising from the production of a product/service at anotherlocation.
3)tertiary- arising from the production of input materials and services in
the production of a product/service.y Each of these aspects has a progressively diminishing impact on
personal Carbon Footprint.

How is it calculated?Emissions are calculated for standard quantities and then are compared with data
entered to arrrive at the answer.
Emissions from, for
example, cars, aeroplanes and electricity generation are
well understood and documented.
Standardemissionsfactors have been calculated for these activities so that
actual emissions do not always have to be measured, but
can be calculated from other data such as amount of
fuel used.
Emissions factors have also been derived foractivities where it is not so easy to measure emissions
such as from agricultural and land use activities, although
these factors are much more uncertain.

Carbon Neutral
y The term carbon neutral refers to something
with a carbon footprint of zero.
Carbon
neutrality is normally achieved by first calculating acarbon footprint, then reducing emissions as far as possible, and
finally offsetting the remainder by purchasing emissions
reductions credits generated by external projects such as
renewable energy schemes or forestry projects.

ActionplanEnergy
Avoid using microwave to reheat extensively.
Reduce use of devices like straightner, hair dryer, electric brush which could be done without.
Make a conscious effort to switch off mobile and laptop chargers when not in use and advisefriends to do so too.
Travel
Try walking and avoid means of tranport.
Travel long distance by bus rather than car to reduce individual emission
Advice friends with two wheelers to switch off at signals
Diet Buy natural if not organic food
Consume meat only once per week, avoid milk sweets since milk cannotbe avoided.
Carry water rather than buy packaged ones

y The action plans can be implemented immediately and do
not need a time frame.

Woodand Carbon FootprintMaterials like plastic, metal and concrete all requires lot of energy for extraction of raw
materials and manufacture. These materials all have positive carbon footprints.
Wood has a negative footprint because of the carbon dioxide fixed by the original living
tree. The emissions associated with harvesting, transporting and processing of wood
products are small compared to the total amount of carbon stored in the wood.
This means that even when energy use for harvesting,
transport and processing are taken into account, wood still has a negative footprint.
So use wood based materials as much as possible

Carbon footprintand corporatesCarbon Footprint & Strategyy As regulatory frameworks on businesses around permissible carbon
emission limits and carbon trading are getting strengthened around theglobe, businesses are taking proactive initiatives to record their carbonemissions and devise ways to reduce the same.
y While greenhouse gas inventory reporting is currently not mandatoryin India, progressive companies are already identifying risks associatedwith GHG constraints and are voluntarily taking stock of their GHGemissions.
y A carbon strategy would chalk out steps for the company to ensure itsgrowth in the carbon constrained economy and maximize its carbonassets. The carbon strategy would also help companies to identifyclimate risks and opportunities, thereby reducing costs and enhancingrevenues as well as their corporate image.
