The Carbon Trust has conducted analysis on the 24 nations competing in Euro 2016 to

compare the carbon emissions produced when watching their teams.

This tournament wallchart is based on the carbon emissions from electricity use related

to an individual fan watching one match on a television in their home country.

Euro 2016“Carbon Bootprint” Wallchart

Which nation’s fans have the lowest carbon footprint

when watching their team?

TOURNAMENT HOSTS

Iceland are the winners thanksto having huge clean energy

resource that can be accessedrelatively cheaply. Almost all ofthe country’s electricity comes

from harnessing abundanthydropower and geothermal

energy.

Runners-up Albania providealmost all of the country’s

electricity using hydroelectricpower stations. Albania is

currently building new plants tomeet the country’s growing

demand.

Semi-finalists Switzerland andSweden share a similar lowcarbon electricity grid mix,

made up primarily of acombination of hydroelectricity

and nuclear power.

Poland is theworst-performing country in

Euro 2016 on grid carbonemissions, with the country

producing the vast majority ofits electricity from coal.

Tournament hosts France produce around three-quartersof their electricity from nuclear

power. The country is also amajor exporter of clean

electricity to neighbouringcountries, including the UK.
